I am doing a creative project for my Women and Gender Studies class. The idea I am planning to do is a video of individuals from around the world and what it is like being a “woman” in society. I am wanting participants who identify as: M to F transgender, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, and cis gender. The idea is to make a 2 minute or shorter video of yourself, and discuss “what being a woman/having female qualities/being a gender minority means to you”, AND also an issue that you have dealt with in society, such as: transphobia, homophobia, biphobia, racism (islamophobia, antisemitism, etc.), being a part of the lgbtqia+ community, sexual assault/rape, poverty, living with a disability, body image, or any social issue that has affected you as a person. I will need: Your first name (or an alias), the country and/or city where you live. If you are not comfortable speaking in English, you can speak in your native language, just please attach a “transcript” of what you said so I can attach it to your clip in the video (please have times/indicators so I know where to cut, etc.)It does not to be a “sitting in front of your computer” video, you can make it serious if you want to, but you can also do it via phone somewhere you are more comfortable, or have some fun with it. I may ask a couple of you to “destroy”/”kick” the social issues ass which means take something that represents the issue that you talked about and destroy it, show you having power over the situation (basically saying “fuck you” to the person/people who have made the racist, homophobic, bullying comments to you; i.e. writing a slanderous thing on a piece of paper and ripping it up, do something creative in public, what ever you want as long as it shows you taking control) If I get a decent amount of videos, not everyone’s “full” video will be in it, but I will try my best to get the best part of your video in the presentation. Also, I won’t make the video if I don’t get enough videos of various social issues/different backgrounds. Who will see it? Myself (of course), my professor, and my TA. I may make a tumblr version after if the video exceeds the allowed amount of time. BUT if you don’t want your experience on the tumblr version, mention that to me when you send me an email. I hope you will consider doing this as women’s issues are still not being represented and people say they “understand” what woman go through, but do they really? By having a variety of individuals from all over the world of different genders, sexual orientations, and ethnicity/races, I hope people understand what being a “woman” is like in this society and the obstacles we still face.
