Fucking Goddamn Turkish Airlines

I’m supposed to be leaving in a week, so I was double checking my flight info. I found a typo in the name on one of the tickets, which is kind of an issue; international flights require that the name on the ticket be exactly as they are on the passport. I tried to contact the booking agency (flighthub) and they have refused to change the name on the ticket, citing rules at Turkish Airlines. When I contacted Turkish Airlines, they gave me the same story; it is the airlines policy that they do not change the names on tickets.

As it stands both FlightHub and Turkish have offered to refund the one ticket, with the idea that I could then book a new ticket for my fiance. As much as I tried to explain, they don’t seem to understand that this doesn’t address the issue. If I cancel the ticket, any new booking would cost at least 300$ more than the price I paid (I booked in November to get a better price) and there would be no guarantee that the seat would be near mine or even on the same flight. 

The big frustration is that the whole issue is over THREE FUCKING LETTERS. They have been paid in full since november, and I’m not asking for any money back. All I wanted was to have the name fixed so she could get on the damn plane. When talking to them, they keep saying that the policy is that there can be no alterations, but it seems ridiculous. I even got them to acknowledge that if there had been a typo caused by them, that they’d be willing to change the name, which just highlights that the refusal is a choice that they are making based on arbitrary policy.

The icing on the cake was when a customer service rep I spoke to when I talked to complaints said that I could just leave it. He said that though he could not guarantee she’d get on, there was a good chance that they’d let her on since the names are almost identical. So either the “names have to be identical” rule is a pointless policy, or this rep felt that their own pointless policy was more valuable than (what I have been led to believe is) a security measure.

Anyway TL;DR I’m angry that they can’t be bothered to fix a minor fucking issue  at my expense so I’m doing what all rational people do, and pissing into the infinite void of the internet to feel better.

I leave for Macedonia on monday. I am really looking forward to this trip; two months of excavations lie ahead of me. This will be the first real test of whether or not I will enjoy my selected career path.

Next week is the final project for 2015 fieldschool. Time flew by and we all had a blast. Digging in the heat is a pain in the ass.

Well, I'm back from my trip to Macedonia. It was really a lot of fun and beautiful place. The people were friendly and hospitable, and the food was good. I managed to meet with the head of the anthropology department of the university of Sst. Cyril and Methodius, and he said he could arrange to get me into an archaeological dig next summer. All in all it was a good start to the archaeology program.

Got the flights booked today. Barring any last minute issues, I should be flying out next tuesday. We will be staying in the dorms of the Ss Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. Unfortunately, visa issues have put the kibosh on plans to spend a few days in Turkey on the way out.
