Can we take a moment to appreciate the people who actually worked out spells? Like, I’m honestly not totally sure if spells are discovered or developed, but either way that seems like a truly grueling process.
I’d like to imagine some dude sitting at a desk with a wand just yelling nonsense words until stuff happens.
“Hototopus Marangius… Nothing.“ “Superfluidity Pasanova… Nothing.” “Benedict Cumberbatch… Still Nothing.” “Wingardium Leviosa, oh oh oh!! That one makes things fly! Guys! Guys look what I found!"
If you’re a writer who ever gets disappointed about not doing enough fast enough...
Just remember that Haruki Murakami, every year thought to be in the running for a Nobel Prize for Literature, prolific writer of magical realist texts, didn’t even decide he wanted to start writing until he was 29. Neil Gaiman wrote comics prolifically, but he didn’t write his first novel (Good Omens with Terry Prachett) until he was 30.
There’s still time. Breathe. You’ll get there.
It was published when I was 29, and written when I was 28. But your point is correct. R.A. Lafferty was first published in his early 40s… There’s no ticking clock before your expiration date. There’s just the work.
Roles reversed
I was barely 14 when I was submitted to the hospital for over a week: my diet consisted out of toast with jam and water, I could barely move since they attached strange things to my body and I was sleepy all the time. While the hospital staff took very good care of me, I felt miserable and confused. The realisation that if my mom had waited any longer...if they had waited any longer to perform surgery on me...Well, I wouldn’t be writing this right now. I believe you were the only one who understood how i felt back then, or really tried to. You were there for me. There were things we shared that nobody else knew about (still don’t). The rest that followed, well, we both know that that puberty was crazy. Still, our parents had to stick with it: we didn’t do drugs or anything, right? We had each other and that meant/means the world to me.
My dearest friend, did you feel as I do now? Anxious, impatient, worried? Now you’re the one in that hospital bed: probably more asleep than conscious, probably very confused at times. I wonder what passed through you the day you were submitted? When I got that call, it felt like someone had punched me in the heart, several times. You know me, I automatically start creating all the possible scenarios I can think of, though I was relieved I could already delete a couple of them. It’s one thing to be confronted with your own mortality and how close you were to the brink of death...but it’s heartbreaking when you are confronted with the mortality of someone else. A someone else that you could not imagine to not be there.
I cannot wait to visit you and I hope you may recover as best as you can. I still owe you a birthday present. I still want to meet up in February. We still need to discuss Sherlock. @thalahel and I need to take you out and do awesome stuff together. We’ll also provide lots of cards, since you love them so much.
Dreams
I'm always surprised how I manage to turn scary dreams into a rather hilarious scene. Last night I dreamt I caught someone breaking into my apartment and he was armed. Normal real life reaction: listen to whatever he says/run away/call the cops? My reaction: oh hello mister robber, let’s try to distract you as much as I can, so that my bf can (hopefully) call the cops or wait, let’s just try to tackle you...nope, let’s just talk and laugh together (even though he was trying to attack me all the time). Really, it was this cat and mouse game...weird.
I actually blame this on Sims 4. It gives me weird ideas.
The new season of Supernatural premieres Thursday, October 13 on The CW.

"It’s when you’re social enough to get invited to things, but so often find yourself standing in a room where it feels like no one knows you."
It describes the feeling so perfectly, making you cringe and breathe out in relief at the same time. You’re not alone.
August 29, 2017 marks two years since the US airdate of The Wrath of the Lamb. According to Bryan Fuller, that’s when talks can start in earnest to bring the show back.
Hello! Would you mind doing an example of not using filter words in a first person point of view? While I know that you can just switch out the pronouns for I/me/my, I just want to see it in action and when you should (and shouldn't) use the filter words. Thank you!
Hi there! I would love to! I think I’ll start out with an example with filter words and then cut out the filter words to show you the difference.
For those of you who haven’t seen my post on Filter Words.
Now, for the example:
I felt a hand tap my shoulder as I realized I had made a huge mistake. I knew the consequences would be unsettling, but I had no other choice. I saw the light of my desk lamp bounce off of the officer’s badge before I had even turned around. It seemed like I always found my way into trouble.
It was the first thing off the top of my head, so it’s a bit rough sounding….
Now for without filter words (And a bit of revision):
A hand tapped my shoulder as it dawned on me: I had just made a huge mistake. The consequences would be unsettling if I didn’t get out of this mess, but I had no other choice. The light of my desk lamp bounced off of the officer’s badge. I always found my way into trouble.
By taking out filter words, you get right to the point.
I’d also like to add a few more notes that I didn’t have the chance to post previously.
Some Examples of Filtering:
I heard a noise in the hallway.
She felt embarrassed when she tripped.
I saw a light bouncing through the trees.
I tasted the sour tang of raspberries bursting on my tongue.
He smelled his teammate’s BO wafting through the locker room.
She remembered dancing at his wedding.
I think people should be kinder to one another.
How can you apply this?
Read your work to see how many of these filtering words you might be leaning on. Microsoft Word has a great Find and Highlight feature that I love to use when I’m editing. See how you can get rid of these filtering words and take your sentences to the next level by making stronger word choices. Take the above examples, and see how they can be reworked.
FILTERING EXAMPLE: I heard a noise in the hallway.
DESCRIBE THE SOUND: Heels tapped a staccato rhythm in the hallway.
FILTERING EXAMPLE: She felt embarrassed after she tripped.
DESCRIBE WHAT THE FEELING LOOKS LIKE: Her cheeks flushed and her shoulders hunched after she tripped.
FILTERING EXAMPLE: I saw a light bouncing through the trees.
DESCRIBE THE SIGHT: A light bounced through the trees.
FILTERING EXAMPLE: I tasted the sour tang of raspberries bursting on my tongue.
DESCRIBE THE TASTE: The sour tang of raspberries burst on my tongue.
FILTERING EXAMPLE: He smelled his teammate’s BO wafting through the locker room.
DESCRIBE THE SMELL: His teammate’s BO wafted through the locker room.
FILTERING EXAMPLE: She remembered dancing at his wedding.
DESCRIBE THE MEMORY: She had danced at his wedding.
FILTERING EXAMPLE: I think people should be kinder to one another.
DESCRIBE THE THOUGHT: People should be kinder to one another.
See what a difference it makes when you get rid of the filter? It’s simply not necessary to use them. By ditching them, you avoid “telling,” your voice is more active, and your pacing is helped along.
The above list is not comprehensive as there are many examples of filtering words. The idea is to be aware of the concept so that you can recognize instances of it happening in your work. Be aware of where you want to place the energy and power in your sentences. Let your observations flow through your characters with immediacy.
Ok, sorry for the lengthy answer, I know you just wanted an example…. sorry!

THIS IS SO GREAT. I dind’t even know there was a term for this (I should have figured, right, because writers have words for everything), but it’s one of those things that being aware when you’re doing it (and editing it right the fuck out) will improve your writing SO MUCH. Removing the filtering helps to draw your readers more intimately into the action of your story, and as the text above says, adds power and immediacy to every sentence. THIS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT TIP I WANT TO SCREAM ABOUT IT.
Excellent post. This is the sort of nuance that turns good writing into great writing, and it’s so helpful to see it spelled out.
Reblogged for safe keeping.
This is amazing!
Road trip to the sun
I’ve always wanted to go on a road trip. Early this year, we booked a week in Benissa, Spain with a group. The boyfriend wanted to go by car and it gave us the opportunity to see a couple of things on the road.
So, last Saturday we left by noon towards our destination. We had about 1800 km to cover!
Our first stop that same day was Reims. Such a beautiful place! It was already hot there, but a little breeze made it pleasant. We saw the cathedral there (for free!) and it was amazing! 😮
Of course, since we had quite the distance to cover, we couldn’t stay very long. 😕
Next stop was Lyon, where we stayed the night. A shower and a comfy bed were really welcome after sitting in the car for almost 800 km!
After a good night’s rest and a yummy breakfast we moved on to Orange (tip from @thalahel). We visited the Roman theater there and I wish we had been there the day they would perform the phantom of the opera! We would’ve liked to do Nîmes as well…perhaps on our way back? After that we thought it was a good idea to grab some dinner in Barcelona. While I’m convinced that this city is marvellous, it is a HELL to drive through! Besides the crazy drivers, the obvious lack of roadrules and many tiny streets, the craziest part was the parking part(we figured that finding a restaurant by foot was easier): Turning into a parking is tricky, but when a man appeared to stop us and ask us how long we would stay, he then proceeded to tell us to park in reverse. Once inside the building he tells us: “Ok, now give me your key.” The boyfriend gives him a suspicious look: “That’s weird? Why?” The man grabs a piece of paper and points at it: “No cash, no creditcard, just your key. I park your car and keep it until you’re back.” You can imagine that we didn’t go for this foreign (but perhaps normal in Barcelona) practice and thanked him for his time. I don’t believe we ever wanted to get out of a city so badly. We actually wanted to to stay in Port Aventura, but it was expensive (much like Disneyland). So we went for a nearby city: Tarragona and stayed the night. The next day we went straight for Benissa (save the stops to use the toilet or add some fuel). Once arrived we basically put on our swimwear and ducked into the pool. Glad we have arrived! :-)

Heartbroken - Agent Carter Not Renewed
The saddest news we could bring you today is that, sadly, despite our best efforts, ABC has not renewed Agent Carter for a 3rd season. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks and appreciation to the entire Agent Carter cast and crew on what was certainly one of the best TV… … Read More
Whyyyyyy D:
We decided to adopt our first plant…obviously the boys didn’t want go for anything ‘ordinary’. As we casually strolled around in the Ikea (I can’t remember how many times we have done that the past weeks), we came upon the little fella above. While it is very cute, I was quite surprised (though I shouldn’t have been) at how amazed they were by Brutus (yep, it has a name!). They poked it, wanting to see the plant in action. (Poor thing!) The result was negative…at least until they managed to catch a mosquito and ‘feed’ it to Brutus. Brutus directly enclosed it within its leaves. I wish I had made a video of the boys’ childish (yet adorable) excitement.
I did decide to protect it and put in a safe spot, much like you would do with kids. Hm, am I even living with grown ups at all?
Moving out...Moving in...
At some point I just felt this urge to “settle down”, “stand on my own feet”, “leave the nest”, etc. I’ve had that urge for over 2 years now. I didn’t quite get along with my mom anymore, almost as if we saw each other too often! We had many pointless discussions and sometimes I didn’t want to go home, in fear of having another. I could no longer find the peace and comfort you should have in your home. I still loved being there, but I needed my own comfortable place. That being said, it is not the MAIN reason for moving out. I think that it was time I had a place I could call my own. So...I moved out of the Mothership and moved in with my lover and a mutual friend.
“Wow now, you moved in with your boyfriend AND someone else? Are you mad?!”
Perhaps, but honestly: it’s not such a strange trend at all. Besides the financial and practical benefits, humans flock together, instinctively. At least: we used to. Nowadays we are so pushed towards individualism, that we forget that we actually need PHYSICAL social contact! We have all the tools served on a platter to stay in contact with each other, yet we seems to have forgotten how to do that. Anyways, I could go on and on about that topic (scientists are actively researching the phenomenon though, since it is such a paradox...or is it?), but my point is that it doesn’t really matter what people think: if it feels right and you get along with each other (more importantly: accept each other!), I don’t see the problem. It’s been nearly two weeks since we officially moved into our apartment. I’m happy and relieved to say that it’s changed tremendously: hardly any empty boxes left, all the furniture set up and being used, (almost) all of my stuff is unpacked,... “All right, you’re happy...Why do you bother with this blog then?” Honestly...because writing is a way for me to find a part of my inner peace and, of course, to vent a little once in a while. I haven’t written in months and after a while it creates this endless, nagging feeling. Sort of like a kid tearing at your sleeve, because it wants attention.
This post is getting long...much longer than I planned it to be. So much for an intro! That’s it for now, folks! Mell
There were many many more boxes...D:
