"No, shh Iris be quiet. We’re going to surprise mommy. I am very excited to hear you play piano, we can do that later.” Aidan whispers to the small, babbling girl as he crouches down and holds her close. “Where did your brother go? He’s supposed to— oh, hi mommy.” He cocks his head and gives a playful glare to Lucas hiding behind Payton. “I’ll deal with you later.”
As Aidan and Iris embraced in the living room, Lucas tugged Payton down the hallway. She tried to protest, explaining that she needed to finish getting ready so they could leave for errands, but he insisted and she soon recognized Aidan’s voice. Grinning, she entered the room, observing the two of them before clearing her throat. “She’s been practicing. She says she wants to be ‘just like daddy’. Lucas picked up one of your old -,” she was cut off by a whine at her feet. Payton waved a hand and shrugged. “He can tell you himself. Anyway, welcome home?”

[Henry shook his head, both in exasperation and fondness.] No Payton, it’s that you shouldn’t. Least those people end up having a heart attack [He trailed off at the end, instead following Payton into the kitchen with the bags. There he began putting some of the groceries from the high shelves away.] No neverminds, finish your thought. What is it?
"Don’tsneakuponsomeonebecausetheymayhaveaheartattackandie,” she replied under her breath as she set the grocery bags on the counter in front of her, committing this fact to memory, even though it seemed like common knowledge. However, when Henry spoke next Payton cringed visibly. “Shoot, she cursed to herself, realizing her mistake. She knew her father would have something to say about her hanging around a certain Blum boy and even more to say when he found out he had been (and still was) in the apartment with no adult supervision. “Uhhhh,” she stalled, as she began to empty the sacks. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Finish what thought? I have no incomplete thoughts, Dad. Besides, I want to hear about how your day was.” She turned and began to hand him the items that were stored too high for her to reach.
What's wrong?
I have the memory of a goldfish! My mind is this way and that way and the other way and okay, movie time. Shh, don’t yell or Henry will hear you. [He follows her out the window, silently proud.]
"Aidan, you need t-," Payton was caught off guard by his sudden shush, frowning. With the window snapped back into place she turned to face him again, holding her hand out. Ever since the 'stairs incident' they'd collectively decided it best for him to lead. "You know they say carrots are good for memory. Wait, no. Carrots are for eyesight. Chocolate! Chocolate helps with memory. Let's get you a ton and then you can share it with me."

And just like that, Taylor could feel his heart ripping from his chest all over again. The scars of his past pulsated as his bright blue eyes paled to look more like a colorless grey. He reached out, grabbing and holding his childhood friend. Though about a year older, Taylor had always considered the small brunnette to be like a younger sister. For a time, she was the only one he truly considered family. When asked about his family and who he lived with, he would often reply with a simple – ‘Payton, my sister.’ He had forced himself to believe all this time that she had forgotten him. It hurt less than knowing she had never once visited him in the hospital or returned his calls. The pair had gotten older. They had grown up. He couldn’t blame her for that, but seeing her there now, he knew that losing her had done more to him than he realized. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t think – I’ve missed you.”
Nothing more needed to be said in that moment. Payton continued to cling to Taylor for dear life, completely forgetting that they’d paused in a busy intersection. “I missed you so much,” she repeated with her face buried against his shoulder. “I’m so sorry.” Why hadn’t she called or written? Gone to him when she’d needed comfort the most? He’d always looked after her and deep down she knew that could never change, not after their past.
Honk! The sound of a car honk startled her and she jumped back with a bit of a gasp. For a moment she thought that maybe it’d been a dream and that the commotion was just her alarm, but that idea was quickly trashed when the driver poked his head out the window and in true New York fashion began to yell. Not waiting for an answer or a protest, Payton reached for a hand, intertwining fingers like they used to and pulled him out of the street and to the sidewalk. “Do you, um, have any plans? If not, we could… I don’t know.”
"Do I ever?" He sighed, moving to kiss her cheek as he pulled himself out of bed. "How about you?"
“Better than I have been,” she answered truthfully. Sleeping with Alek was not terrible; it would just take time to readjust. Payton gently pushed a mug of coffee in his direction, brewed just to his liking. “However, there is an issue we need to address: your blanket snatching! I was only left with a tiny square!”
"It was a nickel! And I almost ate the pie in one bite. I was close enough."
Was it? I could have sworn you bet me a quarter! I think you’ve had a bit too much to drink, Heath. And nonsense, you were nowhere near finishing that pie in one bite, even with the few bites I stole. Don’t you dare lie! Isn't that in your sacred oath or something?
Where is my extra shiny quarter, Cargill? You aren't holding out on me are you?
"Don't worry"
"You looking at me darling?
Oh, no. I mean, sorry. I…thought you were someone else.
Bottom's up.
Hey, you don't happen to have a nickel do you? A really shiny nickel? Like, it has to be super shiny.
"So... What time is this thing over?"
You were right, Cam. We should've stayed home.
Not sure if already drunk, or not drunk enough.
I think there is a general rule that states if you’re questioning how drunk you are, you're not drunk enough. You shouldn't quote me on that though.
