I woke up still really fucking depressed about this (and super early). Think I dreamed about it too.  FUCK.

One of the comments said that Dory is going too.  It had apparently done less well than Cassie.  Sigh.  Why??  These books are gold.  Seriously, no other set of characters has stuck in my brain like these have.  It’s such a rich environment.

yeah, i figured the dory books would be dropped before the cassie books, tbh. and the thing that had me thinking abt it yesterday before it happened was the way efridis was dealt with at the end of shadow’s bane. like, it was funny, but it felt sorta off to tie up such a big thread so neatly in half a page (not totally off, bc, like… it was still very karen…) and that combined with the fact that she said she’d cut that one chapter bc they wanted her to add some things in addition to getting the word count down made me wonder if maybe they’d suggested she tie some things up and they’d just see how sales went. like… without efridis, most of the loose threads from the dory books could be dealt with in the cassie books? so…

With Dory and LC “married” the story could be easily tied up.  It really felt like a natural ending.  It felt satisfying (is that the right word?).  But to be fair, I was only ever invested in Dory as an extension of Cassie. I mean, Ray is funny, but the rest of the cast always fell a little flat with me.  I didn’t hate them (except for Claire most of the time), but I wouldn’t have been a diehard fan of the series because of them.  Sure it’s interesting to see the vampire politics side of things, but, as you said, that could be represented in Cassie or with novellas. 

I dunno.  I hate to say that you could see this coming for the last few books, but it is something I’ve been worried about for the past few years with the Cassie books.  Based on some online chatter people weren’t happy about some publishing things like long wait times between books and other things outside of KC’s control and I think that lost her readers.  It’s a shame because at one time her books were on the NYT best seller list. They deserve to be there IMO.

the conversation between dory and dorina felt very final, too. and different strokes for different folks, haha. my friend who got me into these actually preferred the dory books? they do have different strengths.

but, yeah, this has definitely been a long time coming. the genre she’s in also isn’t forgiving for long waits. it’s so characterized by short books and rapid publishing (and a lot of people are already pretty entitled about the fiction they consume anyway) that it just... yeah. and with the length of the books and the amount of world building/long-game intricate plotting, she can be a hard sell for the PR ppl who want short, sweet trashy vampire romance? but a lot of people who would be into the world she’s built will give it a pass because of the PR element. so she’s in a weird spot no matter what.
