‘I don't think an artist makes mistakes’
E Ryans Bryant is one of thousands of artists finding inspiration with the Sktchy iPhone app. Here’s a peek at her collection of Sktchy portraits with a few words from the artist.
What’s your background?
I come from a large family, my parents had 10 children. My love of art started when I was a small child, I saw my daddy draw a house. I wanted to draw one so he made an outline of a house out of dots for me to follow. I’ve been drawing ever since. When I graduated high school I attended the art institute of Philadelphia.
What’s your medium of choice when you’re creating art?
My medium of choice would be markers because I like the smooth finish that I can get. But lately I’ve been using watercolor paints that I have come to love. I like not feeling like I have to be too neat with them. I like the effect I can get with the brush & paints.
What jumps out at you when you’re looking for inspiration in the Sktchy photo gallery?
I’m usually drawn to facial expressions, hairstyles and the clothes. Also, I like when the photograph is nice and clear.
What’s one quirk in your creative process?
A clean area is a must and I need music.
How do you make time to make art?
My favorite time to do art is in the early mornings before I start my day, or late nights when I can’t sleep.
Can you share one art-making tip?
One tip I have for making art is about mistakes. I don’t think an artist makes mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up too much & learn to work with your “mistakes” because nothing is going to be perfect.
