Claire shivers a little, as if Jenny just talking about her sucky first winter sets a chill to her bones. She doesnât think sheâs made for extreme cold weather â all long limbs and fair skin. The cold seeps into her, and sheâs always thought the chilly, coastal winters were bad enough. Perhaps she shouldâve thought about it before coming to New York. âYikes. Me neither, if Iâm honest. Maybe we both need to hit up Saks?â She says, lifting a brow, âIâd hate for us both to turn into Popsicles this winter.â
Claire goes back for another sip of champagne as she listens to Jenny recall the activities she participated in in her youth. Itâs delightful to hear about, and it makes Claire laugh just a little, bubbly thing. âThatâs really adorable.â She says, trying and failing to recall anything similar she mightâve done in her schoolyears in San Francisco. âWere they paper hats or?â
Claireâs on another sip when Jenny says she had a best friend with a ranch. She nearly spills a little of the champagne while putting the flute back on the counter, reaching up to dabble at the drops of it on her lips before swallowing. âThatâs incredible. I love that for you.â She says, and her voice is soft but honest and laced with a little reverence. âIâm sure the country life is quite charming, but I canât relate. I grew up in the city, spent my whole life in cities. The urban jungle is the only one Iâm familiar with.â Though she does think it would be quite nice to go somewhere less industrialized. âIâll have to see it for myself sometime. Maybe go on a roadtrip.â She takes a second to stop, holding her hand out as if to pause Jenny where sheâs at. âIâm sorry, but your accent is so sweet.â She says, laughing a little. âWhat brought you here?â
Claire feels very comfortable in Jennyâs company. Though, she thinks, she often feels comfortable in the company of women, but thereâs something very charming about Jenny, and she hopes that they become friends. If Jennyâs her first pal in New York City, then Claireâs not doing too badly for herself. âI could use a lot of fun.â She replies with a breathy laugh that seems more of an exhalation than anything filled with joy. âI trust youâll show me a good time, Jenny.â
Claire likes Jennyâs enthusiasm, thinks sheâs just the kind of friend that Claire needs right now â just the right kind of soft and malleable to be in the hands of someone like Claire Liu. âAt present, I donât think Iâll be wanting to get rid of you, but⊠we shall see, wonât we?â She asks, arching an eyebrow, and the low hanging lights of the bar catch in the black pools of her eyes. âThank you, Iâve never done much with it. Itâs black, first of all, and thick secondly. But I think you could do something fun. And my makeup, too?â Itâs a question, of course, âYouâre very well put together, so I think you could do something very nice indeed.â
Claire says Saks and Jenny tries not to pale at the suggestion. Jenny simply doesnât have more than $50 to spend on a jacket, is the thing. Sheâs fashionable, but itâs only because sheâs very good at thrift store shopping or shopping sales. Sheâs certainly not as trendy as Claire is and thatâs fine. Jennyâs pretty sure thatâs not her style anyway. It looks very good on Claire, obviously. Jennyâs not blind. Claireâs absolutely beautiful. And she can probably afford expensive coats.Â
Jenny sips at her champagne instead of responding immediately. âThat would be so fun!â Because it would be. Even if Jennyâs not going to spend the money that Claire might, shopping with friends is something Jennyâs never going to turn down. âDefinitely donât want you turninâ into a popsicle! Even âf youâd be a real pretty one.â She shakes her head at the thought. Not going to happen on her watch. They have a little bit before the winter really sets in. Jennyâs made it her mission to make sure that Claireâs prepared. Sheâs going to get her some gloves. Make sure sheâs really all set and ready. Scarf. Hat. Heated pocket warmers. The lot.Â
Itâs with a fond sigh that Jenny nods. âOh yes. Paper hats. Ugly liâl paper flowers glued on there. Those uh-- - Liâl multi-colored balls of cotton? Those too. Glitter. So much glitter. âs amazinâ they let us use that much glitter.â A pause as Jenny considers Derby Day and Oaks, for a moment. âGood times. Mine always won thâ contest, obviously. âm an artist after all~â She couldnât draw but she could do costumes. Hair. Makeup. Costumes. Thatâs what she was good at.Â
Claire says that she grew up in a city and Jenny blinks. âI feel like a lotta people here are in thâ same boat. âCept the northerners, yâknow?â Nice big houses. Lots of land. Lots of money. âI think growinâ up in thâ cityâs got itâs perks too. You didnât gotta come here anâ learn a whole bunchâa stuff real quick. Back home nobody even locked their damn doors. Now I gotta check mine four times so I donât come home to my tv missinâ again.â She shakes her head again, laughing this time, clearly amused. It shouldnât make her blush, being complimented on her accent, but it does. Probably because Claireâs just entirely too beautiful to be saying things like that to Jenny. Especially after mentioning taking a roadtrip, which Jenny thinks would be a very good time.Â
She canât help but feel like Claire definitely needs a little loosening up. If only because she seems like the type to work way too hard. Jenny works hard too. But she knows balance is key to a happy life. And if sheâs going to be Claireâs friend, sheâs going to make sure sheâs Claireâs fun friend. âOh! I want tâ do the hair anâ makeup of thâ most high-end clients. I figured New York was the place tâ do that.âÂ
Jenny offers a dazzling grin, ââm takinâ that tâ heart, Claire. âm gonna show you the best time.â Claireâs going to have a great time in New York if Jenny has anything to say about it. Sheâs already making plans. Ice skating. Lights at the zoo. Museum trips. When it warms up some sheâs thinking about a road trip. Lots of food and laughter and good drinks.Â
âWe donât gotta do a whole lot. âs gorgeous.â Claireâs hair is healthy and shiny and beautiful. Jenny thinks sheâd have a good time just cutting it. ââd love tâ put some blonde bits just under, so you can hide âem, but also so you can put color in it âf you want. Like. Pink. Or purple. Lavender would look so good.â She sighs happily at the thought and holds her glass out for a refill of champagne, if Claireâs willing to give her one. âI can absolutely do your makeup.â She considers Claireâs face intently for a moment, head cocked to the side just a little as a smile crosses her lips. âYouâre just real beautiful, ainât yah? And you got the smarts tâ back it up. I think weâre gonna be real good friends, Claire. Absolutely.â
