(1/2) hey, I don't know if you still check tumblr any more but I wanted to say that last night I read through all of your 'Scenes from Seasons' and how wonderful they were. Most of them I'd read before but it was beautiful to read through them all together and of course, read the finale too. It's amazing to think how long ago you first wrote them and now it's 5 years since the movie 'Carol' came out - crazy!
(2/2) As always, you perfectly capture the voices of Carol and Therese and the settings of New York, Paris, London beautifully complement what the characters are going through. I loved the references to Desert Hearts and listened to Patsy Cline a lot when I was reading through the stories. The ending to me was just sublime - of course Therese came back to Carol but as her own person now, changed (as we all are!) but still the same. It would always be Carol. Thank you so much & I hope you're well

Hello!! Luckily, I still get email notifications of asks. (: I’m so, so glad that you’re still around and got to read them all through and that you enjoyed them so much (as well as the ending, it took a while to get it right...). I remember that you were one of the first readers and people who championed these little fics, and I’m just so grateful that people have enjoyed and continue to enjoy them so much. Definitely “crazy” (in Patsy Cline’s voice) how long it’s been since the movie first came out and how much has changed, but it kind of made for a fun timeline for these fics, I think - I feel like I sort of grew up with (my version of) Therese. Thanks so very much for stopping by to let me know, and I hope you’re well, too! xxx
The final chapter of ‘Scenes from Seasons’...
...my Carol fic, is now on AO3 and ff.net. Thank you to everyone who has read along for all this time, both new and older readers. I started this story in December 2015, and I never imagined it would get the attention that it did. I’m so, so grateful for all the views and kind words and so glad that people have found as much pleasure in reading it as I have in writing it. This has been a long journey... Thank you again and take care in these strange times, everyone xxx

“There are many times when we’re planning a season that you kind of have to avoid giving the audience exactly what they want because things start to become predictable…” Dave Benioff
Honestly fuck this storytelling style.
Fuck this style of storytelling that puts authorial masturbation over a satisfying conclusion to a story. Fuck this obsession with “swerves” and “subverting expectations.”
Fuck this mentality that you have to outsmart the audience in order to make a good product.
Fuck the idea that “predictable” is automatically boring. Fuck the idea that people who have been paying attention to long-running story arcs should be punished for giving a shit and expecting a cohesive conclusion to a long running story.
Fuck this idea that disappointing endings are okay if they’re “unexpected.” Fuck this auteur mentality where writers have to prove that they’re the cleverest boys in the whole wide world.
Tell a goddamned story; nobody tunes in for twists.
Also, check out what George R.R. Martin himself said:
“The fans use to come up with theories; lots of them are just speculative but some of them are in the right way. Before the Internet, one reader could guess the ending you wanna do for your novel, but the other 10.000 wouldn’t know anything and they would be surprised. However, now, those 10.000 people use the Internet and read the right theories. They say: “Oh God, the butler did it!”, to use an example of a mystery novel. Then, you think: “I have to change the ending! The maiden would be the criminal!” To my mind that way is a disaster because if you are doing well you work, the books are full of clues that point to the butler doing it and help you to figure up the butler did it, but if you change the ending to point the maiden, the clues make no sense anymore; they are wrong or are lies, and I am not a liar.”

Also because HOW something happens in a story is frequently just as interesting as WHAT happens (if not sometimes more interesting).
Nobody watches a James Bond movie to find out whether Bond’s still alive at the end. Everyone knows he lives; they want to know how he’s going to make it through this, and whether he’s still the same person at the end (case in point, the most excellent new Bond film, Casino Royale).
There are many, many different and subtle ways to subvert expectations that don’t include throwing out everything that has been established up to that point and boycotting the narrative and universe. Basically, when you’re telling a story, you should not be worrying about your audience - you should be worrying about your story.
Don't know if you'll see this, but is there any other social media account of yours that we can follow. Or if you could recommend us to follow some of your fav tumblr account, who'd they be? We'll miss you. Glad, you are still writing the Carol fanfic.
Hello! Yes, I did happen to see this through my email notifications! If you get in touch with me off anon, I’m happy to discuss other social media. I’m afraid it’s hard for me to recommend other blogs now since I’m not on here anymore, and I tried to reinstate my blogroll, but it’s not working anymore either… Sorry about that! Also sorry about the delay on Carol fics - I still hope to finish them this year, once other busy-ness subsides. Thanks for the kind message and take care xx
Hey guys, I won’t be active on this blog anymore, although my queue’s still running - time to move on after so long. (: If anyone wants to stay in touch one way or another, lemme know! xxx
Hey all, so I just realized my long queue is done, which means my blog is now done (à propos my above post from ~two months ago)... Carol fics will continue on AO3 and ff.net this month though until they’re finished! Take good care of yourselves xxxx
