Module 11: Internet of Things
The internet of things is a common topic in the technological world today but what is it exactly? The internet for things or commonly known as IoT, is when everyday objects adapt on the internet by sending and receiving information. These everyday objects must have an on/off switch and a way to connection to the internet. These everyday objects include not only your cellphone, television and laptop but it also includes your refrigerator, washing machine, car, oven, toaster, microwave, printers and many more everyday objects you see often. There is an estimate of 4.9 billion connecting “things” for 2015 and by 2020 an estimate of 25 billion connected “things” was made by Gartner. The connected “things” can talk to each other by exchanging data, but why is this important to us? Example in the morning your alarm goes off which could send a message to your coffee maker and toaster to brew coffee and prepare breakfast. Another example would be a smart traffic camera system. This could monitor over bad weather, traffic and accidents over an entire city and redirect traffic and provide warnings to drivers ahead of time. However, one major issue is security. With all these devices connected together would our information be safe? Example If someone hacked into a camera in the smart traffic system they would basically have control and eyes around the entire city. There are both pros and cons towards the internet of things and it will be best to take caution as more and more “things” are added.
RSS Feeds & Feedly Experience
“Feedly is a news aggregator application for various web browsers and mobile devices running iOS and Android, also available as a cloud-based service. It compiles news feeds from a variety of online sources for the user to customize and share with others.” - Wikipedia
When first reading about this assignment I knew of RSS feeds and I knew of Feedly, but I did not know what they really were for. I mistakenly dove right into it, making an account and picking categories, hoping everything would make sense but I was a little confused about what Feedly was for exactly. I wanted to know what Feedly’s purpose was, so I did some research off Google I found out that, an RSS feed allows a website/blog to summarize content for users and Feedly is basically a personalized online magazine of all the content a user is interested in, which would have been helpful information to start with.
After understanding what Feedly was all about, I dove back into Feedly and picked categories I was interested in, which were Beauty, Cosplay and Korean music (Kpop). I went around and searched up different blogs and things that I followed and was interested in. By the end of it I realized that I had taken everything I was interested in and created my own personal filtered magazine, without all the things I was uninterested in. Afterwards, I started adding new categories that I cared about, this included: D.I.Y. (Do it yourself) and photography. Feedly allows a user to store all the things they are interested in and care about in one website where they can continuously browse through without running into unwanted posts or searching it up. I thought the pop out feature when you clicked a blog post from the website or blog you are following was a great way of keeping the flow of the website.

Strangers can define you based on physical features. People who know you can define you based on both physical features and your personality features. There are overlapping thoughts from people around you and your inner thoughts, however only you can define yourself, no one knows you better than yourself. There are things only you know about yourself and those thoughts are important; even when they aren't the happiest ones. It's important to have your own thoughts because that is what makes you different. Being different allows you to have your own opinion and ideas. -- The facts around the silhouette on the data portrait are found through a collection of thoughts I've heard from strangers, friends and family say about myself. The facts inside the silhouette are some personal inner thoughts.
A Day in Melissa Chan's Life
This data portrait is a representation of myself. The data represents how I’ve grown and it shows one of my biggest hobbies. The data I used is an arrangement of photos I had taken over the course of 3 years. In general, photographs are collected as a memory to remember something important but it is also a way of collecting data. Each photo represents a different costume and props I’ve collected since 2012. Through out the course of 3 years, I’ve collected a large album of photos from many different photo shoots, which gave me a variety to choose from. I chose to present my portrait in a timeline format to give an understanding of how I began to present day. As you look through the timeline you get a sense of how I’ve develop over time. Recently a large portion of my time has been spent on cosplay. From the timeline you can see that starting 2014 I’ve started to become more involved and active in costume and prop making. In my opinion, this is the strongest representation of myself, as I have developed a strong passion for cosplaying and through out the 3 years it has become an important piece to who I am as a person.

MPC225: A Hub of Many Stories
Waiting in Line at an Amusement Park
Story 1: "May I see your stamp, please?" "Please stay behind the line." "Please do not sit on the railings." "Enjoy your ride." It's a regular day at Canada's Wonderland. Busy, busy, busy. It's full of crowds lining up for rides. This is where I work, nothing fancy just a part time job where I can earn some extra cash. I work 5 days a week at the same ride, Thunder Run. It gets a little dull telling visitors to continuously to get off the rail, to show their stamps and to stay behind the line. It definitely strains my voice. Everyday I stand around, counting the minutes until the end of my shift. Now there's an hour until it ends, why is time so slow today. Story 2: "Thunder Run?" "Mommy, can we go on that?" "Mommy, mommy! I want to go on that, please?" "Daddy, lets go, lets go, please?" Today is the first time I'm at Canada's Wonderland, I'm so excited! I want to ride all the rides here then again! Too bad I'm too short to ride some of the super, duper big rides. My mommy and daddy said when I grow up I'll be able to ride those rides. It's so much fun, but the lines are always so, so long. This will be my first roller coaster, ever! I can't wait, we're next in line! The amusement park worker doesn't look like he's having much fun. When I grow up I want to work at an amusement park, I'll have much more fun than him! I wish I could just stay here forever and ever with my mommy and daddy. Story 3: "Why do we always have to ride Thunder Run?" "Stop staring at him, you're drooling." "Argh, the line is always full of little kids" "Fine, I'll wait just for you." Another day at Canada's Wonderland with my best friend. This is my 3rd time getting the seasons pass and I've been on Thunder Run like 100 times already. I want to ride Behemoth or Leviathan, anything but Thunder Run. My best friend has the biggest crush on one of the workers at Thunder Run and can't stop gawking at him. I've told her 100 times to just talk to him, I mean there's no harm in trying. That way I won't have to ride Thunder Run 1000 times this summer. Maybe today, I can convince her to talk to him.
