Parallel Encounters: The Do Over
MPC225: A Hub of Many Stories
Waiting in Line at an Amusement Park
Story 1: "May I see your stamp, please?" "Please stay behind the line." "Please do not sit on the railings." "Enjoy your ride." It's a regular day at Canada's Wonderland. Busy, busy, busy. It's full of crowds lining up for rides. This is where I work, nothing fancy just a part time job where I can earn some extra cash. I work 5 days a week at the same ride, Thunder Run. It gets a little dull telling visitors to continuously to get off the rail, to show their stamps and to stay behind the line. It definitely strains my voice. Everyday I stand around, counting the minutes until the end of my shift. Now there's an hour until it ends, why is time so slow today. Story 2: "Thunder Run?" "Mommy, can we go on that?" "Mommy, mommy! I want to go on that, please?" "Daddy, lets go, lets go, please?" Today is the first time I'm at Canada's Wonderland, I'm so excited! I want to ride all the rides here then again! Too bad I'm too short to ride some of the super, duper big rides. My mommy and daddy said when I grow up I'll be able to ride those rides. It's so much fun, but the lines are always so, so long. This will be my first roller coaster, ever! I can't wait, we're next in line! The amusement park worker doesn't look like he's having much fun. When I grow up I want to work at an amusement park, I'll have much more fun than him! I wish I could just stay here forever and ever with my mommy and daddy. Story 3: "Why do we always have to ride Thunder Run?" "Stop staring at him, you're drooling." "Argh, the line is always full of little kids" "Fine, I'll wait just for you." Another day at Canada's Wonderland with my best friend. This is my 3rd time getting the seasons pass and I've been on Thunder Run like 100 times already. I want to ride Behemoth or Leviathan, anything but Thunder Run. My best friend has the biggest crush on one of the workers at Thunder Run and can't stop gawking at him. I've told her 100 times to just talk to him, I mean there's no harm in trying. That way I won't have to ride Thunder Run 1000 times this summer. Maybe today, I can convince her to talk to him.

Show and Tell: Conflict
Jenny is a third year theatre production student, focusing on backstage sound. Ever since freshman year, she volunteered and took part in a lot of backstage production. She gained experience working backstage with others in second and third year. In school, she works with technicians, and stage directors. Most of the people taking part in preparing the shows are also students, therefore a lot of people are in the process of learning the basics while some, lacking in experience.
Jenny works with other sound students and is constant contact with the director of the show. All Jenny wants is for the show to run smoothly. However, when working in a group with other sound people, there will be some that lack knowledge or simply don’t understand proper procedures or timing of the scenes. In Jenny’s group, 2 out of the 3, are never prepared for the meetings or rehearsals, and because of them, Jenny is always left to complete and figure out how to fix things in their place during rehearsals. Because of this, certain sounds were switched with others, leading to some confusion on stage with the actors.
In the end, Jenny is always seen responsible for anything that happens with sound, either good or bad. She doesn’t feel that it is fair when the director blames everything on her just because her group mates are not doing what they are expected to do. Jenny is not the type of person to point figures at someone when she is getting yelled at for someone else’s wrong-doings, but this isn’t the first time its happened and Jenny is not sure how to speak up.
Guest Lecture
The guess speaker that came in today took part in the production of xbox and other many other projects. Most of the projects he took part in, involved a large group of interactive participates in an ultimate reality game. It was a very inspirational lecture, where a successful person, in our field, came in to talk about his past ups and downs, combined to his success. He talked a lot about thinking outside the box. Getting the audience to discover little clues to a side story that is part of the final conclusion. Some of the tips he suggested were to always have a backup with another backup. He mentions how the unexpected could happen especially when it involves the public. Overall, the lecture definitely provided insight towards the possibilities that I could not have imagined before.
MPC225: Guest Speaker Elan Lee
It was an honour to be able to meet Elan Lee, Chief Design Officer at XBOX Entertainment. He was very inspiring with all his past stories of his failures and the choices he had to make. It's amazed me that he started the genre Alternate Reality Games. I loved when he said fail fast, take risks because we know we're going to fail so why not get that out of the way. I hope to have more amazing guest speakers like this in the future!
