Welcome Back || Renee & Catalina
“You should have been more careful,” Renee said lightly. It was not particularly unkind - really more of a statement of fact. From what she knew of Catalina, she seemed rather lovely, and it wasn’t in Renee’s interest to see the dark-haired upperclassman get hurt.
At the question about her shawl, she smiled in an almost shy way. She had never been particularly knowledge about fashion. She knew all of the big names, of course, but she couldn’t actually tell a Coach bag from a Louis Vuiton bag if it wasn’t for their elegant logos.
“Yeah, I think so,” she replied with an obvious shiver, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. “Lillian, my cousin, gave it to me. I like it, but I probably should have worn a jacket over it. The weather’s in the twenties right now.” Goosebumps prickled on her exposed arms, and she frowned slightly.
Cat waved away the younger girl’s concern and laughed it off lightly. “No worries, I’m never careful. The amount of times I walk into doors and trip over curbs would astound you. You’d think dance classes would’ve given me some grace by now,” she said with a shrug, amusement in her tone.
She noticed Renee’s shiver and shook her head slightly, her smile lingering. “Well, your cousin’s fashion taste is commendable, but probably not very suited to the New York weather. I always forget how goddamn cold it is here until I come back.” Though she was relatively warm in her own winter parka- as warm as any California native could be in a East Coast winter- Cat could tell that Renee was freezing with nothing to cover her arms. She grabbed her own suitcase again and looked over the treeline that obscured the dorms from sight. “Well, we should probably head towards the warmth of indoors.” She looked at Renee with a slight frown creasing her brow. “You’re a freshman, so you’re in Blair, right? I was thinking of heading that way anyway, since the coffee shop is like, right next door.”
“You must get a lot of bruises, then,” Renee said with a little smile, her eyes losing their dim sadness that they had possessed a few minutes ago and brightening - just barely, but there was now light in her eyes instead of misery.
“It’s warmer in the summer and spring, though, thankfully. I’m going to be counting down the days until the beginning of spring comes soon enough.” She let out a brief laugh, adjusting her shawl so it covered her nearly frozen and numb arms. At the question about her dorm, she nodded. “Yeah, I’m in Blair,” she responded, walking at a brisk pace towards the faraway dorms. The pathways were obviously still icy, and she nearly slipped when she tried to walk at a pace faster than that of a leisurely stroll.
Doesn’t sound like fun.
Yeah, it wasn’t.
Uh, do you have any friends you’re waiting on or something?
Yeah.
Boring.
Yours?
Same. My two best friends have yet to return from their vacations, so I’ve been stuck here doing nothing.
Doesn't sound like fun.
I’m Renee Adams. Freshman.
Good to meet you.
Yeah, you too.
So, uh, how was your holiday break?
Boring.
Yours?
I missed you punks. Did you fuck anything up for me while I was gone?
Wes! Hey there.
Thankfully, no. That would be evil.
Yeah, I had fun.
Mmm-hmm! I watch the ball drop every year. It’s kind of a tradition now. What did you do for New Year’s, Riley?
Spent it with friends at a party of sorts. Actually more of a small get together.
I think watching the ball drop is a tradition for everyone.
Sounds like fun.
It's definitely one for me. I'd probably cry if I missed out on watching it. Okay, I wouldn't really cry, but you know what I mean.
It was definitely boring around here during break.
Scarlett, right?
Tell me about it.
Yep, that’s me. I don’t know who you are, sorry. What’s your name?
I'm Renee Adams. Freshman.
Good to meet you.
I went home for Christmas, which was fun.
Stayed in with Audrey last night, though.
Ah, did you?
I’m glad you had fun then.
To watch the ball drop, I’m guessing?
Yeah, I had fun.
Mmm-hmm! I watch the ball drop every year. It's kind of a tradition now. What did you do for New Year's, Riley?
Thank god people are finally getting back from their trips. There was absolutely nothing to do here over break.
It was definitely boring around here during break.
Scarlett, right?
Happy New Year, Riley!
Haven’t seen you in a while. How are you?
If it isn’t little miss Renee.
I’ve been around the campus for the break. It’s been alright.
How have you been spending the holidays?
I went home for Christmas, which was fun.
Stayed in with Audrey last night, though.
And here comes the fun in seeing how everybody handles their hangovers for New Years.
Happy New Years everybody.
Happy New Year, Riley!
Haven't seen you in a while. How are you?
It's so strange...
I’ll make sure of that.
Hope you have a good New Year’s Eve. Don’t spend it alone in your dorm, watching sad British television shows, like I plan to.
I’m still working on my plans, but I promise I won’t copy yours.
I suppose I’ll see you when the next year comes around?
Yeah.
As my elementary-school self would say, “See you next year.”
15, 27, 60
15 - Not yet.
27 - That would be sweet, but no.
60 - Two years.
9, 31, 32, 51
9 - My perfect mate? Am I a fucking werewolf? Well, I guess somebody who's attractive, witty, and kind.
31 - Once, when I was thirteen.
32 - Never.
51 - Yes.
3, 17, 25, 30, 58
3 - No.
17 - Not particularly, but I don't hate it.
25 - That'd be nice.
30 - Never thought about it. I like my body, mostly.
58 - Five? Well, being attractive is always a plus. Wit and charm are good. Also, not being an asshole. Also, making me laugh.
