Cambridge’s Professor Simon Schaffer presents The Writer, a 240-year-old, 6000 piece machine that was created by Swiss-born watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz, his son Henri-Louis, and Jean-Frédéric Leschot around 1770-1772. The automaton can be programmed up to 40 letters or signs, and lives at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Switzerland with two other of Jaquet-Droz’s automata: the drawer and the musician.
The above clip, which you can also find on The Automata Blog in 2006, is from BBC Four’s Mechanical Marvels: Clockwork Dreams. Watch it here in its entirety (for now). Great stuff.
In the archives: more automata, including Jaquet-Droz & Leschot’s singing bird boxes.

{{It always throws me that I never intended Tok to be so antiquated when I try and take count of most bots’ physical age. Originally she wasn’t going to be any older than 120 until I looked into history and grimaced at the time era where clockwork was at it’s highest complexity.}}
{{Anybody want a Ralts with a really dumb name?? If not just to breed}}

On the right track - Track and Bunsen
"…. Oh y-.. you’re gonna—" Bunsen was quickly doing a spectacular job at failing to speak clearly, "M-Ms. Tok-.. I don’t—…… Shhhhhhhe lets me stay outside for the uh…. the fixin’ thing… I don’t mind watchin’ people fix cars n’ stuff! It’s jus’ different when it’s-… When ya-… Y’know…." she finished lamely, fidgeting intently with her hands. "……. ‘Says I get ‘squee-mish’…"
Track nodded in understanding, and pondered for a moment. The last thing he wanted was to make her uncomfortable, so the best course of action would be...
"Well, since you get squeamish, how 'bout I take care of all this in here, and you can wait outside so you don't have to watch? If you like, when I'm done here I can tell you the names of the flowers." He smiled politely at her, somehow knowing she would much rather enjoy that than watch an old bot fix his arm.
All the response he would get was a hurried nod as Bunsen squeezed through the door to freedom. Car fixing and the like had always been a point of interest, and making working things from pieces of scrap had always been downright fascinating, so being unable to stay around bots being fixed was just so... confusing. Whatever it may be though, it seems to be so fundamental in whatever programming that she simply couldn't override it... Though it would have been real helpful more than once when Mr. Lawrence wasn't available to come around. Maybe she just didn't know how yet...
She watched as the sun started to cast long shadows over the old tracks and looked back into the derelict building. Another small piece of door had crumbled away at her hasty escape and inwardly she cringed. Mr. Track hadn't been upset the first time though... Perhaps because he was nearly the same size, he understood how hard it was to fit into a world that didn't fit you...
Reblog this if I'm allowed to answer your Open/IC posts.
I’m really scared and nervous, I see an open and I start to panic, I know I really want to answer it and sometimes I get the courage but usually I don’t. So this is more of assurance for me. Letting me know that you’re alright with me answering your open/IC posts.
These two have built an interesting relationship with the elder taking the responsibility of protector over the younger, despite the cards dealt against her in terms of physical ability; being severely arthritic, retaining only half her vision, being left with only her bite and a potentially lethal weak spot. Barely being the approximate size of a large male giraffe, she is not too large to be harnessed for human use.
However, what she does have over the youngling is the wisdom and drive to do harm should the need arise. A Bunsen dragon may be better known to have a devastating flame that can create molten stone from brick, but this one is more likely to flee from an aggressive dog than so much as flick it away.
{{Really, this was too fun to pass up!}}
