I was thinking about writing a one-shot fanfic for “Iron Lung”, but the thing is that I only write fanfics for stories that I wish had ended differently. Or in general if I just thought something should’ve been different.

But I think Mark created a story that doesn’t need to have a different ending, or really be changed at all, plot-wise. I know there are some things people don’t like about it, which is fair, but personally I respect the decisions Mark made.

The ending is pretty bleak, imo, but I think it fits thematically. Not every story needs to have a happy ending, necessarily. It just needs to be satisfying—which I feel the ending of this movie was. Yes, it does leave a lot of questions, but again I think it fits with the overall tone of things.

If I do end up writing a short fanfic for it, it’ll probably just be something leading up to the end of the movie’s plot. Like a character study type of thing.

But idk if I’ll write one at all, tbh. It kinda just depends on how long my hyperfixation for it lasts, lol.

Hello! I was wondering if you had ever written/had any ideas of when/how Mark had found the DA.

I see a lot of different interpretations in which both are so broken and longing for companionship they cling to one another, and thats why mark makes the DA his main character, or that Mark is forcing the DAs hand and using them as a pawn . I wanted to know what you thought! 😸

Okay, I've finally formulated my ideas about this because I love having multiple interpretations of things, but there will always be favourite ideas! A lot of it comes down to whether you see Actor Mark as a sympathetic character.

Number one, I wrote something like the second idea - Mark using the DA as a 'pawn' - in my series about Dark (Mirror, Mirror). In that, Mark takes the DA out of the mirror dimension/void as an attack on Dark, totally antagonistic. At this point, they've developed a positive relationship, so it's both a way to take something away from Dark and a flex that he could get them out of the mirror and Dark couldn't. However, they don't really have a 'use' once they're out in this case.

Another interpretation could happen if the DA is removed from the mirror before Dark ever gets to them again, therefore somewhat removing Dark from the equation. In this, it could go either way in the portrayal of Mark - as you said, he might genuinely be looking for companionship, which I could definitely see because the DA is the person least responsible for what went down between Celine, William, and Mark. Plus, that whole "It's not fair, is it?" could be taken as him feeling genuinely sorry for the DA, who got shot without doing anything wrong. Mark could feel kinship with them in that neither of them had a choice in what happened to them - with the affair or the murder.

Admittedly, I used to see Mark pretty one-dimensionally - Damien has always been one of my favourite egos, and he got him killed, so he was on my bad list from day one. However, as I started writing for him and actually exploring his character, he got to me. I went from completely condemning him to having a five-part fic about him. (An animation - linked here - was probably the start of my softening towards him- because omg the lyrics and the imagery and--)

SO! At the moment, my personal interpretation of how Mark found the DA has a lot to do with his hero complex (I touched on this idea in Mirror, Mirror, but it was mainly mocking that Mark saved the DA from the mirror). In Mark's mind, he's the 'hero' of the story, and Dark/Damien's the 'villain', so who better to help prove his superiority than rescuing the victim of the villain? Dark was the one who trapped them in the mirror, after all, so why not help them get out? It's very much the idea of Mark collecting actors to fill the roles.

Also, I saw this post on Pinterest (sue me) and it made me think of the DA and Mark's relationship, so you guys are gonna have to see it, too:

okay, this is pretty long and I've already answered the question so feel free to ignore this, but it's just hit me that, even though Mark tells Damien that he's going to be the villain in the story... has he actually been made to do anything villainous? You could go through the entirety of Date, Heist, and Space without encountering Dark. SO! My theory is that Mark appeared in 'Damien' in order to collect him as the 'vilain' for his story (in the same way as he would for the DA), but Celine killing him interrupted it, so Mark left without a villain and had to come up with something else for his adventure plots. That still left Damien with the ability to impact the story, though, hence why Dark appears in some paths but is otherwise unrelated to the general plot of the adventure.

Anyway, sorry, just had to get that out there before I forgot.

But yeah! Also sorry for the long answer, but usually my thoughts would be a literal fanfiction, so I guess it's relatively shorter? Either way, thank you so much for asking, I really love exploring characters :D

A theory I’ve had for a while is that Actor is only interested in the DA/viewer character because they used to have some kind of relationship with Damien (whether it was strictly platonic or something more than that) and Actor simply wants to rub it in Dark’s face that he can “have” the viewer character now.

Like, it’s not necessarily about genuine interest or attraction on Actor’s part — it’s more so that he just wants to keep something away from Dark that he knows Dark wants. It’s very petty and imo totally on brand for Actor.

i had a wack ass dream that i met markiplier again & he confirmed a theory i've had since 2018 about the maskiplier cult shit that happened on here

okok so, i was in a city to go to a convention originally hoping to meet jschlatt. my friends and i were walking around on a street w/ a lot of food vendors & restaraunts and we actually met grizzy, bigpuffer, elasticdroid, and pezzy - my friends started yapping and i just stood there, hoping to talk to them eventually, but i couldn't because i was in "i want to add to this conversation, but there's no good enough openings and oh god they're already on another subject" autism hell. then they started walking away and i, slightly panicked, walked up to pezzy and was able to talk to him and the guys finally :)

not important to the markiplier dream plot, but fun nonetheless - love those guys

ANYWHOO, the next dream scene takes me to a meeting for the content creators (which i apparently was able to attend). i was sitting on the floor because that's what others were doing. i turned around, and there he was. mark-of-pliers himself. i was incredibly chill when i started talking to him, UNTIL i realized that i was an idiot. i could tell him about the theory. the theory i failed to fully convey to him when i originally met him in 2017. i gusped a gasp so loud, i'm sure i panicked dream-markiplier a bit.

next scene, we're apparently talking on discord. i think i'm playing roblox or something, i don't entirely know.

i start telling him my whole "i met you in 2018 and talked to you about a theory i have on maskiplier's identity - i actually had two identities in mind, and i said the less-likely one. i was going to finish off what i was saying, but you gave meeee of all people some lore that hadn't been public knowledge yet and that threw me off my rhythm so badly i forgot."

i was going on the mental script i've had for YEARS now, perfectly. not a word out of place. i rock B)

then i start yapping about my theory, and mark does what mark does, and he says some cryptic shit like "there's not a lot more to figure out"

i asked him finally, after YEARS, if maskiplier was the viewer. on the other end of the call i, after a moment of silence, hear:

"yes."

VICTORY. GOD DAMN VICTORY, FINALLY.

okay so! this is a theory i've had for a WHILE (and i've posted something on another account that i don't use anymore, @hotdamndarkiplier. honestly i'm reworking the whole theory, AGAIN, for like the 3rd time so it reads better) -- and yes, i'm talking about the masks at the end of wilford motherlovin, as well as ☝️ the time where mark went on a road trip from LA to ohio to spend christmas here (circa 2017). he did a whole cryptic cult thing, telling us to "put on our masks," aka use the same pfp he had.

we came to the conclusion that this person posting, in lore, wasn't mark, but someone else -- then dubbed maskiplier.

people commonly think this the beginning of it all, but honestly i doubt that. i think this post below is the real start

so for context; this was posted practically just after who killed markiplier? was finished. that project, we know, is the backstory of darkiplier and wilford - the very egos that are being threatened here.

why would mark kill off these two when he just finished their origin story? why would he kill off his two main egos? that doesn't make sense to me. (also, the 100,000 reblogs didn't actually happen until after the 'deadline' -- i screenshotted the post late) (also also, mind the hashtags -- it's not fair is it. we've heard that before)

so this whole maskiplier, "put on your mask, now you look like me haha" thing, predictably, quickly devolved into madness.

it even got to the point where other egos seemed to suddenly split off (or i like to say shattered) from maskiplier, having different writing patterns/cadences. honestly i don't know if they were ever established as true new markiplier egos. i think they're all still fundamentally maskiplier, for a very specific reason.

i think maskiplier is the district attorney, the viewer.

the whole ransom note about wilford and darkiplier is a revenge plot -- because who wouldn't want revenge against the people who killed them, against the people who manipulated them and left them to go mad while trapped in a shattered mirror for however many years?

the only thing they have keeping them company is the "broken shell," the body of actor mark. and, oh, look.

it's not fair, is it? we've seen that before. (i don't know why the captions say "isn't" -- because i stg mark says "is" here)

oh, and look,

look at those eyes. now go back up to maskiplier's profile picture. those are the same eyes. same white highlights and everything.

alright, let's go to wilford motherlovin' warfstache -- because you're right, we do see masks there.

fun trivia fact! the extras in this shot are people who were on markiplier's patreon. so, i guess you could say they are viewers.

if maskiplier is really the viewer on some hellbent revenge plot, this means wilford is in danger (buddy, get out now..). but, in the video, neither wilford nor abe actually address the GLARING mask-shaped red flags in the room.

in the BREAKDOWN video of WMLW, it's even worse. mark pulls his cryptic shit (but are we really surprised at this point?)

so, why are the viewers the only ones to actually see this? we. are. maskiplier. what other reason could there be?

markiplier has SO many subscribers - 38 MILLION i think. if the viewer, singular tense, is going to be a character, what do we look like? especially if there's so many of us. honestly, form a character design standpoint, it would be much easier if we had a singular, identifying thing.

so yes, i had the luck of meeting markiplier at vidcon 2018. i had this theory READY to go, and i was so excited.in the beginning, i had two possible culprits behind maskiplier's identity; abe (who i didn't really think was maskiplier), and the viewer.

i was gonna start off with the wrong answer, and do a whole scooby-doo reveal. it was going to be great.

i get to the first part, blaming abe, and markiplier hits me with "no, but that's a good theory." and then, "abe will be back real soon." (this was before WMLW came out, and before anything was teased)

the first sentence told me that there was something to figure out here, i just didn't have the right culprit yet.

the second sentence fried my brain. mark gave me of all people precious lore before anyone else.

i, an adhd-ridden idiot, forgot about the viewer. and i walked away, never asking. i still kick myself to this day.

Ahhhh, okay. Yeah, that theory does make a lot of sense. I always assumed the Tumblr posts were just Mark fucking around with his followers (as he often does) but not actually canon to the MCU (Markiplier Cinematic Universe) lore.

Also, the viewer character lore is so confusing/convoluted in general to me because wdym they’re an established character in WKM (the DA) but also LITERALLY the viewer behind the screen???

Like, they have a backstory with Damien, because they’re a fictional character just like him and Actor and Wilford. But also…they’re still us??? Like???

Mark really made his lore as complicated as possible for no reason 😩😩😩

I love that man to death, don’t misunderstand me, but boy oh boy does he love making things unnecessarily meta sometimes.
