Once the other replied, Julie disappeared for a moment before returning with two sodas. She extended one to the brunette. “Is everything okay?”
“Thanks,” Valeria took a sip of her soda, sighing. “I just don’t like these parties,” she explained. “My parents love to drag me to them, though.”

Harley laughed at the girl’s reaction. It was clearly going to take a while before she got used to the taste. “No one really likes it. We just pretend to look more adult.”
“Well that’s dumb,” Val shook her head. “Studies show that teenagers drink wine more than adults do though, something about easy access or something. I don’t know.”

“What have you got against free booze and food? It can’t all be that bad, right?”
“I’m seventeen,” Valeria pointed out.

Riley grinned at how excited she was getting. “Okay!” He said, pretty excited himself. There wasn’t much to do at the party except for dancing and sneaking drinks. Riley laughed at the memory, “Okay but that cheese was kinda gross. I felt sick for like a week after eating that!” He exaggerated before giving her a smirk. “I’ll try to give you a good punishment for when I win.”
When Valeria was sure her parents couldn’t see them she grabbed Riley’s hand, guiding him to the exit and out of the building. “That’s your own fault. I told you not to drink it,” she chuckled. The cold air hit her bare arms hard and she crossed them as they began to walk. “Fat chance, Hyde.”

“You want a sip?” She offered, extending her glass towards the girl. “I promise I won’t tell.”
Valeria licked her lips, contemplating it for a second before nodding. She took the glass and took a big gulp of the woman’s wine, making a face as she swallowed. “I still don’t understand how people like wine,” she said, handing her the glass back.

Riley frowned when she discussed her home life. Sad to hear they got in fights all the time. Maybe they just needed to get out though. He thought to himself, hoping Val’s parents wouldn’t split up. He couldn’t imagine parents fighting all the time. Lois and Clark sometimes did but they were usually very loving and honestly a very good team. Riley nodded at her question, “Oh yeah.” He smirked, “There’s no way they’ll notice. They seem pretty occupied with each other anyway! So, where do you want to go?”
Valeria looked over at Riley, a smile on her face. “Let’s go bowling,” she recalled his suggestion from before, the idea exciting her. “It’ll be so fun. We can get pizza and those nachos with the semi gross cheese that you chugged that one time. Winner picks losers punishment.”

“Well they are a couple.” The boy reminded her before smiling. “It could be worse, your parents could be dead.” He said, referencing his biological parents before figuring that that probably wasn’t all that funny. He cleared his throat. “Listen, Val. If you’re not having any fun then maybe we can sneak off together? Find something more interesting to do. Like bowl, or… eat some pizza?”
“I know they’re a couple, but they don’t act like this at home. Either they’re yelling or not speaking, there’s no in between,” Valeria’s eyes were locked on her parents before she looked at Riley, giving him a look of sympathy. She wanted to mention how good Riley had it with the Kents, but she kept her mouth shut. She checked her watch. “Think we have time to sneak in and out before my parents notice?”

“You and me both.” Harley replied just before bringing her third glass of wine up to her lips.
Valeria looked over at the woman, sighing. “At least you’ve got wine to get the edge off,” Val pointed out.

“Oh come on, Val! They aren’t that bad.” Riley said with a smile to his face, placing a hand on her shoulder. “There’s punch and uhm… there’s me. So, I don’t know what else you could possibly want.”
Val looked over at Riley with an unamused look on her face, huffing. “I still hate these parties,” she told them, her eyes catching her parents in the distance. “Look at them, acting all couple-y. God it makes me sick.”
“I hate these parties,” Valeria sighed, crossing her arms over her chest and blowing some hair out of her face.

“Do you see how i’m dressed? I’ll never judge anyone on something as trivial as dance moves.” Cassie assured taking the girls hand and guiding her onto the dance floor.
“Okay fine,” Valeria chuckled, putting her soda down and following behind Cassie.

“You know it’s Christmas when you don’t get STRANGE looks for quoting Elf in every day conversation,” Julie laughed softly as she spoke to the person beside her. “I feel like Buddy did when he heard Santa was going to be there. I LOVE parties! – Would you like another drink?”
Valeria hated parties like these, especially when she couldn’t find Riley; naturally she was already a wallflower, but at these she felt completely invisible. She barely heard the other person speak until the end, her head turning quickly. “Uh, just a soda.”

Cassie was growing bored with the idle chatter, she answered questions about why Diana and Donna weren’t there. She looked through the crowd trying to find any of her friends, no familiar faces popped up so finally she caved and tapped someone’s shoulder. “Excuse me, Would you help me sate my boredom and come dance with me?”
Reed and Sue had pretty much forced Valeria to come, and the second they got inside the party the former members of the Fantastic Four had ditched their daughter to mingle. She was pretty much alone until someone -- Cassie -- tapped her shoulder, asking her to dance. “As long as you don’t make fun of my lack of rhythm, sure.”

He noticed the slight tint on the girl’s cheeks but figured it was the weather, colder weather did tend to cause rosy cheeks. That had to be it. “But you’re not normal—-” He paused narrowing his eyes, “Not that you don’t look normal but deep down you know you’re not.” He shrugged his shoulders, “Does give you some semblance of a normal life. Much more calm, smooth. All of the above.”
Normally, being called abnormal would’ve sent Valeria into a fit of anger, but coming from Peter she knew it wasn’t used as an insult, but a compliment: that usually wasn’t so for the kids in her school, but she had mostly learned to keep her anger to herself. “I know what you mean, Peter,” Val reassured him, nodding.

Valeria was smart, he knew she’d figure out that while witty sometimes he spoke prematurely. “Aw! Now I’m hurt, maybe a little offended. I won’t hold it against you though.” He arched a brow, cocking his head slightly, “Why didn’t you? Could’ve showed you the ropes. New found independence and all.”
A blush appeared on her face and Valeria sighed: she wondered if she’d ever shake the crush she had on Peter. It was dumb, considering he’d never look at her as any more than Franklin’s kid sister, but she couldn’t help it. “With the ban and everything, my parents thought it’d be a better idea to keep me back. Make me more normal or whatever. I don’t know.”
