I'm curious what your opinion on the concept of 'Male Gaze' is in gaming. Do you believe it exists? Is it actually a problem? Because from the way I see it, 'Male Gaze' isn't male-based. Straight men like attractive women, so do bisexual men, so do bisexual women, so do lesbian women. Those who don't are straight women or gay men. Given the apparent majority, why is 'Male Gaze' a male problem?
A Good question, that will get me a lot of flack.I think there is a male gaze as well as female gaze, but I don’t think it’s very well understood. As someone that works in television we actually spend a lot of time creating audiences and determining what they like and dislike. Women seem to enjoy shows that deal with violence, even sexual violence, even when women are the victims. In point of facts many crime drama have a larger female audience then a male one.
Much of the theory comes from a feminist called Laura Mulvey, who wrote an essay called “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema.” She’s a character. Like at one point she described the Zoom to be a masculine expression… which I really feel doesn’t make that much sense. If you read the work and what is written about it, some feminists seem to think zooming is like thrusting a penis, and not the director wanting to inspect the scene closer. To counteract the male gaze she made the film Riddles of the Sphinx which is mostly long 360 pans that go on for much too long and is horribly boring… in my opinion.
Then you have female directors like Kathryn Bigelow who made “The Hurt Locker,” which is set in a warzone and is about disarming bombs, Zero Dark Thirty which is about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, and Strange Days which has rape scene where the victim is forced to watch though rapist eyes. All of these film could be used as an example of the male gaze, when in actually they were directed by a woman.I actually am very interested in how different gender see the same scene. How they perceive female and male characters and how this differs between the genders. But the female gaze often becomes a crutch that media critiques use to dismiss ideas they don’t like, or topics they don’t want to confront honestly. Bayonetta for instance was designed by Mari Shimazaki, with the director saying “only a woman could have made Bayonetta look the way she looks.” Yet Bayonetta is often criticized for being a character no woman could respect.
And a lot of women DO respect her. Male Gaze is just a term for those that appear to have really good intentions but outsource their thinking... or have such double standards it's enough to choke an elephant. Or just poorly understood or an emotionally held belief that seems to adapt and always be right even with contrary evidence. Even when questioned. people make strawmans and excuses that have glaring double standards and maybe those who make such things don't even realize it.
Happy Birthday Vivian James
Why are you writing something?
We took all the money, left over from the Scholarship Fund, as well as all the money from the poster sales. And we gave it to a Film School.
Why?
In Canada there are two types of Film School, one focuses on the study of film, another focuses on production of film. In production stream in the students 4th year they will make something called a Thesis film, which will their final project.
Now for some reason, Gamergate, and the people who were associated with the Scholarship fund, really hated Paul Feig’s Ghostbuster film. But they wanted to make it clear that it wasn’t because they didn’t want to see women in film, but because they felt that it was reusing an existing story, or rebooting an old idea.
To that point they were much more interested in films that had female main characters that were original, or a new intellectual property.
To celebrate Vivian James’s Birthday, all of the money we gave to the Film School, has been ear marked for an award every year for the next 4 years.
The award will be given to the student that chooses to create an original film with a female main character. The gender of the Direction, Writer, or Producer does not matter, but the main character must be a woman.
This film will go on to be played in festival and act as calling card for the film makers so they can create future productions.
FAQ
What’s the name of the Scholarship?
The Vivian James Film Award.
Why isn’t it called “Ghostbusters Sucks So We Made This Scholarship?”
Intellectual Property Laws.
Will the name of the award appear at the end of the credits?
If the director chooses it will appears at the end of the film as
“The Vivian James Award - Organized by The Fine Young Capitalists” and include the picture of Vivian James used for all of our Scholarship projects.
Will this be last production that the Scholarship does?
Yes, probably part of the reason we gave away the money was for accounting reasons.
Where can I send emails to complain about this?
Can /v/, 8Chan, and Gamergate take credit for this? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Where I'm from, most of those who make a point of being feminists are strongly left-leaning on the political spectrum. I'd bet my left nut on that they'd take an instant, and irreversible, dislike to your organization based on nothing other than that you have the word "capitalists" in your title. Do you think anti-capitalism may have been a factor which dragged you, unwillingly, into "gamer gate"? (May seem crazy in your part of the world, but here it definitely isn't).
When we started the project, it didn’t have a name so we picked The Fine Young Capitalists as a place holder.
When we started interviewing people for the project, we found that certain people could not get over the name. And those people were the hardest to work with, provided the least amount of new ideas, and always wanted to be the center of attention.
We kept the name because it was funny, it described exactly what we were going to do, and everyone that couldn’t get over the name were in social justice for all the wrong reasons.
In the end the project was about changing people minds. And if the only reason you didn’t like the project was because of the name, god help anyone that you met who didn’t share the same exact view as you.
On Opression and Narrative
Please members of serious social justice movements. When you say that 4chan can not take part in a project, you are oppressing them. By the very definition of the word you are. You harm your own movement and you destroy the narrative the media has created. If you wish only to destroy the narrative, then support them. If you oppress them you only create more publicity for the project and actively harm your own. I care about the world being a better place, and there are still serious issues involved in social justice. Preventing 4chan from giving money to support Butt Cancer and Woman is the least important issue I can think of. Changing the mind of the small minority that are misogynists is far more important.
What do you define as sexism ans misogyny? Do you feel misrepresentation is "true sexism" or do you think that it's simply a result of inadequate writing? I always believed that more doesn't always mean better, as there are many male characters that are stale and useless as moldy bread, where the lesser amount of female characters has a greater ratio of them being iconic, and in many cases, not necessarily for their gender specifically. - Jack
There is no true sexism, there are simply degrees of sexism.
You can do the most horribly perverted things with consent and it is not harassment and you can do the most innocent things without consent and it is. And there are many things that exist in a grey area in between based on context.
But the best way to advance as a society is for people of all Genders, Races, and Religions to be able to present their idea and let society embrace them. Let them find their followers and their audience.
I do not feel that creating a quota helps, I would rather have one amazing character than one million token characters.
How do you feel about Moot banning threads about your game?

Raised over $25,000 for a feminist cause from 4chan.
What is your opinion on how 4chan users/anons came to respect you (Matt) as an individual? Watching the 'burns' you've been dealing out in the face of harsh and unfair criticism is perhaps a major reason why. I'm speaking for myself here but I'm sure many would agree that it's a shame you aren't going to be as present in future (also I liked the videos you worked on quite a bit.)
Multiple times women have come up to me during this project and said “As a Woman…” expecting me to immediately change to their point of view.
My response is “As a feminist that doesn’t really matter in the conversation as both men and women should be treated equally.”
If we continue to do this project in future it will be much easier if it’s a woman saying that line than a man.
I feel absolutely terrible with this whole gamer gate stuff. I dont' see a good end for all this and i dont' know what to do. Should i just kill myself?
You wouldn’t worry so much about what people really thought of you if you knew just how seldom they do. - UnknownAll of this will be forgotten in time, and less time than most people think.“I instantly realized that everything in my life that I’d thought was unfixable was totally fixable—except for having just jumped,” - Ken Baldwin suicide survivor.

An excerpt is available below.
A study by psychologists John Newson and Elizabeth Newson (1968) offour-year-olds and their mothers, is referred to as the “roaming radius study.” Researchers measured the distance on the playground mothers allowed their children to wander off before they were called back. They found that girls were regularly called back before they had a chance to roam very far, often with verbal and body language that implied they face danger if they are far from their mothers; boys were allowed to explore much further. In the late 1970s, researchers found that in the course of an afternoon’s play, a typical ten- or twelve-year-old boy may travel a distance of 2,452 yards, while the average girl of the same age might travel only 959 yards. These types of influences recur throughout a child’s life, with the result that hesitancy and risk avoidance appears more “innate” in girls than in boys. —————- When Matt was referring to how women feel like they are imposter in computer science he was referring to.

While both male and female students provide similar descriptions of the typical computer science student, a larger number of students than we had expected (both male and female) say this image of the computer science student “is not me.” Contrary to the stereotype, about half of the computer science students we interviewed enjoy computing but also have broad interests and are not glued to their computers. The Effect of Physical Height on Workplace Success and Income: Preliminary Test of a Theoretical Model. Judge, Timothy A.; Cable, Daniel M. Journal of Applied Psychology, Vol 89(3), Jun 2004, 428-441
Abstract
In this article, the authors propose a theoretical model of the relationship between physical height and career success. We then test several linkages in the model based on a meta-analysis of the literature, with results indicating that physical height is significantly related to measures of social esteem (p = .41), leader emergence (p = .24), and performance (p = .18). Height was somewhat more strongly related to success for men (p = .29) than for women (p = .21), although this difference was not significant. Finally, given that almost no research has examined the relationship between individuals’ physical height and their incomes, we present four large-sample studies (total N = 8,590) showing that height is positively related to income (β = .26) after controlling for sex, age, and weight. Overall, this article presents the most comprehensive analysis of the relationship of height to workplace success to date, and the results suggest that tall individuals have advantages in several important aspects of their careers and organizational lives. The Dynamics of Crowdfunding: An Exploratory Study. Ethan R. Mollick University of Pennsyvania - Wharton School Journal of Business Venturing, Volume 29, Issue 1, January 2014, Pages 1–16
Crowdfunding allows founders of for-profit, artistic, and cultural ventures to fund their efforts by drawing on relatively small contributions from a relatively large number of individuals using the internet, without standard financial intermediaries. Drawing on a dataset of over 48,500 projects with combined funding over $237M, this paper offers a description of the underlying dynamics of success and failure among crowdfunded ventures. It suggests that personal networks and underlying project quality are associated with the success of crowdfunding efforts, and that geography is related to both the type of projects proposed and successful fundraising. Finally, I find that the vast majority of founders seem to fulfill their obligations to funders, but that over 75% deliver products later than expected, with the degree of delay predicted by the level and amount of funding a project receives. These results offer insight into the emerging phenomenon of crowdfunding, and also shed light more generally on the ways that the actions of founders may affect their ability to receive entrepreneurial financing. —————- When Matt was refering to women having problems with venture funding.

We identify a profound and consistent gender gap in entrepreneurship, a central path to job creation, economic growth, and prosperity. Across a field setting (three entrepreneurial pitch competitions in the United States) and two controlled experiments, we find that investors prefer entrepreneurial pitches presented by male entrepreneurs compared with pitches presented by female entrepreneurs, even when the content of the pitch is the same. This effect is moderated by male physical attractiveness: attractive males are particularly persuasive, whereas physical attractiveness does not matter among female entrepreneurs. These findings fundamentally advance the science related to gender, physical attractiveness, psychological persuasion, bias, role expectations, and entrepreneurship.

Don’t bother telling us about it as we have no capacity to engage in criminal procedures.
On - "I have never been a member of the communist party."
We’ve said this line on three separate occasions and I’m going to explain why, and also why we put up the stupid petition, sign it here. During 1950’s there was something call the Red Scare, which is also referred to as McCarthyism. After America ended the Second World War with the dropping of the atomic bomb, almost immediately America went into a cold war against multiple communist countries. And it became apparent that the USSR had hundreds of spies deep in the American government.
And the government started putting into place ridiculous policies.
In March 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9835, creating the “Federal Employees Loyalty Program” establishing political-loyalty review boards who determined the “Americanism” of Federal Government employees, and recommended termination of those who had confessed to spying for the Soviet Union, as well as some suspected of being “Un-American”.
In 1958, it was estimated that roughly one out of every five employees in the United States was required to pass some sort of loyalty review. Once a person lost a job due to an unfavorable loyalty review, it could be very difficult to find other employment. “A man is ruined everywhere and forever,” in the words of the chairman of President Truman’s Loyalty Review Board. “No responsible employer would be likely to take a chance in giving him a job.
People were brought in front of congress and were interrogated on these issues for real or imaginary crimes. And these policy was used by the RIGHT against left leading policies and as a means to decrease civil liberties and increase the surveillance state. Minorities were targeted, LGBT individuals were targeted, every minority was affected. But the larger issue was how ludicrous ineffective it was, many of the people that were using these policies to arrest and gain sensitive information were themselves soviet spies already in the government.
These polices attacked various media creators, writers for Hollywood were interrogated and lost their job, the red scare was in part responsible for the wide spread approval of the book “The Seduction of the Innocent,” which said that comic books were a negative form of popular literature and a serious cause of juvenile delinquency. To totally affect our culture arguably for the worst.
When I saw a writer from supposedly the most progressive video game site, advocating in a sidewise manner that people should sign this petition it completely set me off. This is dumb this stupid, there is no #GamerGate party, there is no need to create a list of member for the sole purpose of punishing them, and there is no reason for a person who coined a phrase to have to deal with this stupidity. This is the dumbest I’ve seen in this whole debate, not because it’s the worst thing, but it’s being done by a supposed journalist who should know better.
So you know, for all the journalists reading this could you start fucking writing article about women in the game industry that focuses on their content. Because being oppressed isn’t a selling point when someone is putting down 10 dollars.
On Pointless E-Drama
So we sold about 27 posters. Which in one case is really cool but in a more accurate case, did not cover the cost of creating the posters, printing them and purchasing the Shopify account. All in all we made exactly $50 bucks, which we are using to purchase a framed poster of Lizzy as Zelda to ship to her. We are going to write an email to her so we can get her physical address, something that we find vaguely ironic, as her reason for leaving GamerGate was that information was placed online. We will be still selling posters for the next weeks so feel free to purchase them at
http://the-fine-young-capitalists.myshopify.com/
And the funds will go into the scholarship fund for next year. Apply at
http://www.thefineyoungcapitalists.com/Scholarship
I feel that the reason for the poor sales is of course out fault. It’s difficult to promote these kind of things, and even with awesome designers, it’s hard to attract attention, especially if you don’t want to engage in the normal sort of E-Drama.
We’ll contact the design idea winners privately and work out how we can illustrate design for them for a smaller cost.
As for the rest of it…
When we started the women in game design project what we really wanted to do was two things.
1.) Get women more involved in game design.
2.) Show that the gaming community wanted to support them.
Everyone feels that we have accomplished that goal.
But Matt literally wanted to work on the project with the goal that he just handles the money, and the planning and not have to deal with the public. So far he’s had not one, not two, but three writers from top online publications call him a scam artist, he got death threats, and multiple people from an Online Anti-Harassment Task force have openly attacked him.
All of this was expected; in point of fact we had multiple meeting on the topic before we even started the Indiegogo. This is why Lola is the only person in the video, and why Heather presented the project. But none of that really matters and Matt was the person who made the comment on the Reddit and now it’s “his” project for some reason, despite the fact he is nether getting paid or directing the production.
The fact that no one is talking to Lola or Danielle shows the deep sexism that is present in the gaming issue. And the fact that the supposed moral majority in the gaming press hasn’t contacted them for their side of the story further expresses that point.
A man by the name of John Bain once said that the best thing for people that were interested in improving the gaming climate was to not focus on Internet celebrity drama. And it’s with that comment in mind that we will be moving our webpage TheFineYoungCapitalists.com to focus on the scholarship fund in the next couple days and not Afterlife Empire
Afterlifeempire.com will be hosting the majority of the updates on the project. And you can contact [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any question on how the money is being spent. But for the good of Danielle and Lola we feel we should separate the two projects.
In the end no one cares about the drama involved in creating the game, and everyone cares that the project actually be delivered. We feel dealing with the E-Drama and these smaller projects distract us from that goal.
We’ll update people sporadically on how the game is going Via Twitter and Tumblr but I don’t think we’ll be dealing with anymore of this E-Drama. Which includes not making silly post to gather attention.
It will be interesting to see how that works for us. I think it will make it more difficult for us to get through Greenlight in the future. But in the end all we did was give women the tool to present their ideas and rely on the Gamer community to support us in creating them.
Thanks for that Gamers, but to make you proud, we really have to stop following the endless drama that is Gamergate and actually finish the game that you paid for.

Second of all, we offered a scholarship for STEM through a partnership with the Porn Charity. Well we are happy to announce the winner, for the first year.
Jordan Newton who is studying Computer Science we’ve included her essay so all of our backers have a better understanding of what we saw in her.
Growing up, I have always loved video games, and it’s been the general consensus that I would always go into the field myself. However, it wasn’t until just recently that my aspirations were more refined to the grand vision of the future that I see now. I want to completely revolutionize the way we think about the union between education and technology using the awesome, enthralling power that video games have. Inspired by my younger brother and his struggles in traditional classroom settings, my dream is to work in the game industry making educational games that are actually both fun and functional. Because my little brother has so many learning disorders, he developed a severe anxiety towards books and reading. However, his love for video games has made me realize that he loves great stories as much as any avid reader does, and that his voracious appetite for games has actually helped him dramatically improve his reading skills. After this startling revelation, I began to research the link between “gamifcation” and education, and have shifted my career goals to making games that teach not just for people like my brother, but for gamers of all ages. After studying and experimenting with “gamification”, there is absolutely no reason that gamers—regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality—can’t learn things of merit from games. If Minecraft can teach kids about digital logic and basic circuitry, why can’t we teach any other subject? I also believe that I deserve this scholarship for my work in promoting diversity within the field. I am a National Center for Women & Information Technology Aspirations in Computing winner, an award given to young women who serve as inspirations for both young women and women who have long been in the industry. I am also one of nine young women worldwide chosen to be a She++ Campus Ambassador, a position that gives college-going women the resources needed to help alleviate some of the specific problems that plague their campuses in regards to being both accessible and hospitable to underrepresented demographics. I also teach weekend computing workshops for middle school girls, volunteer with GEMS clubs, and mentor several FIRST robotics teams. Ultimately, and hopefully through developing my games, I hope to become a positive inspiration for girls wanting to become computer scientists and game developers themselves. I feel that many of the women in the industry spotlight give an overall negative impression of the field, and are actually pushing aspiring young women away from the field rather than encouraging them to pursue their passions. I want to set a positive example for women everywhere that you can be both kind and successful in a field that has for so long been telling them that such a feat is impossible. Financially, these dreams are a long shot. Annually, my FAFSA EFC is the absolute lowest it can be, and I have had to take out private loans and borrow to be able to pay for my education thus far.
With a heavy heart we say
From Danielle and Lola
Hello everyone! We want to thank you for being interested in Afterlife Empire. We want to provide the best game possible, so we’re going to be delaying the launch a bit so that we can do so. Most of our team is working on Macs, so we haven’t had as much bug testing as we’d like on PCs. With our backers having the early access keys we are getting a lot of support and reports on potentially game-breaking bugs we need to fix before we release the game. For our backers, please email us at [email protected] with reports of any crashes or bugs you experience so we can fix these as quickly as possible. Screenshots are welcome, along with as much detail as you can provide. For everyone else waiting, we hope that you understand that we want to present a polished product for you to play. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We’ll be announcing more details on the new release date soon! Stay spooky!
