this fanfiction shit easy
Aziraphale during the great war, for some reasons
It was never purely about the cottage, not if we only got the cottage by removing aziraphale and crowley
"here's that south downs cottage happy ending you wanted so bad. your favorite characters have been disappeared though, these are just some rando humans who resemble them. enjoy!"
genuinely, can someone please explain why you feel that the married guys living in south downs *are* aziraphale and crowley? because it’s a very lovely thought and i’d love to see that perspective, but i just don’t get it.
crowley and aziraphale are a demon and an angel. they had god make a new world where demons and angels don’t exist. i get that those guys *look* like them, even sharing similar/the same names and interests, but they don’t have the ineffable husbands’ memories, and they’re also, y’know, human. so i don’t see them as aziraphale and crowley. but again, i’d like to! so if you’re reading this and you disagree with my take, please share your perspective and why you think so!! i truly want to have my mind changed on this
Okay putting aside the polarising bits about the ending, this was still such a WEAK episode for a series that has given us such interesting stories till date.
- what was the point of introducing Jesus?
- what was the point of all the build up to a final showdown of heaven and hell versus humanity?
- what was the point of the apocalypse when just stealing and burning the book of life could have ended everything?
- what was the point of creating a godless universe after everyone who lived in the god's universe had already been obliterated?
- what was the point of Aziraphale and Crowley dying for the creation of a new universe? They still ended up with their entire universe and everyone and everything they ever knew being erased from existence.
- what was the point of Michael just tearing pages from the book and nothing being done to stop them?
- what was the point of putting the line about Metatron tweaking the book and fiddling with reality if there was to be no payoff from that hint?
- what was the point of Jesus learning to find the lady? He still ended up erased from existence
What was the point of GO3?
i'm not surprised that it was weak, because it was a six episode season squeezed into 90 minutes. but here's my thing: *i* thought the point of go3 was just to give us fans *something* to placate us and tie things up after the original plan fell apart. i was expecting fanservice basically, i wasn't expecting quality television but i was hoping they'd have a neat little story that ended in our favorite characters kissing and living happily ever after. but we didn't get that either, so what WAS the point!?
crowley had such a pessimistic worldview that you can't change anything and everything was toxic and that's what I admired about aziraphale because he believed in change
well turns out crowley's depressing outlook was right ig?
“your ship will not become canon” is boring. it’s expected. “your ship will become canon but only after getting erased from existence so it’s not exactly your ship. also they don’t kiss” is scary. it’s possible. it happened to me
AND ANOTHER THING
what was that little finger kiss?? like what are you doing aziraphale, you’re literally about to be destroyed, you can kiss him that’s ok. like after all the lip glances and little touches in season 2 (and the first try that was obviously incredibly significant for them both??? like???) it didn’t even HAVE to be a kiss, but not even a hug?? we’ve literally never even seen them hug??? but we got a weird little finger kiss?? y’all don’t have to do that yk it’s ok to kiss each other what is going on
anyway i’m ramblin’
Ok, as a wanna-be writer and soon a Master in literature, I know that a good ending and a happy ending aren't always the same.
A happy ending is when the characters are happy. A good ending is when the ending is written to match the theme of a story.
(Example, Frodo sailing off at the end of LOTR isn't a happy ending (it's sad) but it's a good ending (matches the themes of LOTR).)
The thing is, GO3 didn't have neither a good nor a happy ending. It's not happy because Crowley and Aziraphale get wiped off. They literally die for the sake of the world. It's not good because they don't have to.
S1 showed that humans DO have free will. They're capable of being good and evil up to the point they can be better than angels and worse than demons. This is literally what being a human means and this is the power needed to stop the end of the world.
Aziracrow's sacrifice means nothing in the thematic sense of the show, BECAUSE the theme was never about humans doing evil shit and life being hard because angels and demons existed. Of anything, they did what they did despite heaven and hell.
Prefacing this with the fact that I'm not an essay or analysis blog. That's not what I do, I prefer to explore my feelings and ideas through fiction, but in the wake of everything that I just experienced with the Good Omens finale, I just really felt like I needed to get this out to process my feelings on how it ended, given how much it has meant to me over the past seven years.
Spoilers for Good Omens season 3 under the cut:
my girlfriend says 'good omens s2/s3' (as they are one overarching story) is to 'good omens s1' what 'love never dies' is to 'phantom of the opera'
so y'know. enjoy the very good adaptation of a beloved book. and then we can just treat 2/3 as intriguing high budget fanfiction (which it is because poor old terry's passed anyway)
and another thing… idk about you guys but my crowley and aziraphale are a demon and an angel, enemies to friends to situationship to almost-lovers, a 6,000 year slowburn. and they were fully shaped by the fact that they are supernatural beings, and by all their shared experiences, good and bad. that crowley and aziraphale have now semi-canonically been snapped out of existence, they have *never* even existed in this universe, they were basically book of lifed, the very punishment that was a threat in s2. and no weird ooc human au can ever be them because what they’ve been through and what they’ve learned is so much of who they are
Aziraphale and Crowley did NOT get a happy ending. Let that sink in.
After everything they'd gone through together, all their history, their love spanning 6000 years, they literally vanished into dust.
Their "human versions" are not them. They met each other in their 50s? 60s? and will get like 30 or so years together.
No sticking together for centuries despite being from opposite factions in an eternal conflict, no developing their rivalry, friendship, and eventually love throughout the ages, no having each other's back despite the dangers of doing so, no bickering, no rescuing each other, no "you go too fast for me, Crowley", no 'our' Bentley, no "angel" as a pet name, NO THEM. At all.
This is my worst nightmare I'm going the fuck back to sleep.
OMG. They don't even have angel as a pet name. THERE IS NO FUCKING ANGELS IN THAT UNIVERSE SO THEY CAN'T HAVE ANGEL AS A PET NAME.
The new universe doesn’t bring back the people that existed before. These are new people with new history and memories. OH LIKE HEAVEN WANTED TO DO WITH JOB’s CHILDREN. We literally got the version where heaven actually kills Job’s children and gives him new ones.
I don’t know why but aziraphale having more hairstyles in one episode of Good omens in comparison to THE WHOLE OTHER TWO SEASONS OF THE SHOW is so funny to me
they were really posed in the writing room like hmmmm…..you know what would make this finale better. A happy ending, declaration of love?? Nah. Let’s give Aziraphale braids instead
hilarious that aziraphale started with short curls, grew out his hair and braided it during the war, and then lost crowley and went NO NOPE GO BACK and returned to his original hairstyle for six thousand years
ok just to recap they lost the antichrist in S1 they lost the archangel gabriel in S2 and now they lost jesus??? omg these guys can't do anything
