By watching other showgirls, Lucy learned various tricks to defeat starvation during moneyless periods. Whenever she was asked to dine in a restaurant, she became adept at hiding rolls in her handbag for breakfast the next morning.

"Finally I carried a paper bag in my purse just for buttered rolls," she says, "and on roll-less mornings I ate anyway. I’d go to the B. and G. sandwich shops and lurk around the lunch counter hunting for a one-doughnut man. This was a guy who’d order doughnuts and coffee. He’d drink his coffee, eat one doughnut, put down a nickel tip and then get up. I’d do a fast slide onto his stool, yell for a cup of coffee, pay for it with his nickel tip - and eat the other doughnut."
