@mixed-kid-problems
Daily Multiracial is a tumblr that posts about a famous multiracial person every day, if you're interested.
are you kidding me… how is this……. what
Perhaps I should explain a bit. Barack Obama is technically mixed race: his mother was white, and his father was black.
Personally, it irks me that people disregard white ancestors and label people solely based on their "colored" side. I feel like if I were in his position, I'd rather categorize myself based on the person who raised me.
This isn't a criticism of Obama, but of the socety we live in. He should be able to identify as white, black, both, or neither. However, it's assumed that he should identify as black, because, for whatever reason, his white side doesn't count.
Couple announcements
Hey all!
For some reason, the queue isn't posting things at the time it should be, so the postings have been somewhat erratic. Apologies for that.
Also, I'm going to run out of ideas! I need you guys to submit! You can either make it yourself (using the template) or just send me the text and I'll put it on a template.
Thanks so much for following! You're all awesome!
I think that where you live or grow up determines what you identify your self as
I agree, and in a perfect world it would be solely based on where you grew up regardless of skin color.
Unfortunately, people still treat race as a definition of who you are, so in many ways being multiracial is difficult. People associate being Black with a certain culture, being East Asian with a certain culture, being South American with a certain culture, being European as a certain culture, etc., so sometimes people genuinely don't know what to make of mixed-race kids.
I'm lucky enough to live in a place where race doesn't seem to be a huge deal (though, it's not perfect of course), so I really haven't had trouble fitting in or finding friends, but I know many multiracial people struggle to identify themselves. In the worst places, they're outright ostracized and harassed by whatever culture(s) surround them.
Personally, I find it really irritating that if you have any ancestors who weren't white, people assume that you should identify as your non-white part. I'm half White and half Pakistani, and I'll identify as biracial. If I pick one, it feels like I'm rejecting one of my parents, and since both my mom and dad are wonderful people, I really don't want to. However, if a multiracial person chooses to identify with one side, that's okay too, because it's their choice. I just don't like people calling me either White or South Asian, because I'm both and neither.
Sorry for the long reply, kind of went off on a little rant there. Ah well, hope it makes sense. :)
