What will it take to get the next generation to vote?
Millennials have finally, in 2019, overtaken Baby-boomers in numbers, but the billion dollar question is when will this be felt at the ballot box.
Boomers have co-opted the political system, ladling out plenty of public and corporate welfare and helped themselves to generous pension benefits at the expense of future generations.
And, by electing Trump, they have proven to be more xenophobic and racist as a voting block than Millennials, who tend to be more socially flexible and vote Democrat. Almost three quarters of Boomers are white, while Millennials are only 56% white, according to Pew Research.
But, while Boomers vote en masse, Millennials tend to stay home on election day. Only about half have bothered to vote in a Presidential election. Maybe Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez can energize her cohort and get them to show up to the polls in 2020.
