Decade watch Continues

Ryuki World: one of the reasons i watched this show in the first place. it is absolutely fucking rediculous. and i stand by this.

blade world: *checks who wrote it* ah the kabuto tribute in mood, -but nah it’s still kind of like blade. but it’s still pretty fun, i like it. even has a fight that’s just an ep of blade happening in the background of this episode of decade

Faiz world: i unironically enjoy this better than regular faiz. also Hi Ryon!

Agito world: one of my least favorite worlds. it’s better since i can recognize the plot nods. but it’s not interesting on it’s own. and Shouichi Ashikawa is much less charismatic or intersting than all 3 of his namesakes (Barely in Gills case). not that good of a showing for Yusuke either

Den-World: my headcanon is this is just the Main rider world. -it’s just den o. it’s fine. pretty fun. Daiki really Really wants to see a guy become a train.

the den o warship movie: it’s...there. Deneb is very very good. the 5 minutes of Tsukasa are amazing.

Kabuto world: One of my favorite worlds (before and after having seen kabuto -please note i first watched this Before Kabuto proper). it feels like a distillation of kabuto’s emotional/plot beats. -also a nicer world than usual. it’s good shit. even has a lot of possible foreshadowing for later decade reveals and that’s the good shit.

we’re doing a rewatch of the other most appropriate rider for october since we just finished Ghost: Tsukasa Kadoya himself: Kamen Rider Decade

this time having Seen nearly all of phase 1 heisei - sorry Hibiki

ep 1: Still good, sets up a lot that they sort of tried to pay off without Aikawa-san being around to write it.

Kuuga world: i see why Kuuga fans were mad now. not a good first world to do but at least Yusuke is a nice if ...not good at being a Rider, boy after this.

Kiva world: yeah this feels like Kiva. still real good.

Kamen Rider Ghost final thoughts: what a weird mixed bag of a season. not the worst and not anywhere close to the best. -with a really good final battle.

..I’m not fond of the eyecons as forms. as i don’t feel they bring anything unique that isn’t just accomplished by handing takeru a weapon. -even the forms with unique fighting styles only tend to have it used once -and even then are not used much.

the cast is fine and working with what they have, as were the writers since Fukuda has said he was super busy during the run of ghost.

it’s fine, harmless. but not like the worst rider season. *sideyes faiz and Drive*. it’s certainly here. -glad that the legend rider specials (And by extension Ichighost) are canon.

100 eyecons was sure a movie. -Argos seems neat, wish he’d gotten to be around more as a foil for Takeru also wish Argos had a cool sunset fight considering how his final form looked.

Adel was..also just there. -his redemption ep was neat tho.

-also go sit in the corner for Kanon being a moe lamp, and Alia being a very pretty lamp. -and also for wasting Seiji Takaiwa in a very rare face role

Alain should’ve been Secondary, Akari and Onari should’ve been riders, and No one should’ve okayed the clone plot. and the Gammaizer while having cool suits were boring as fuck

Edith aka the sage sucks too but at least he admits to being out of his depth and also going oh god i fucked up

Kamen Rider Hibiki 1-2: maybe someday i’ll give you a second go. but not today.

i knew it wasn’t for me. and i still think it’s not for me. -also the fight scenes were Really hard to look at for me And @sailor-cresselia

Saber 1-2: good stuff. interested in seeing where this is going

Hibiki’s fights had way too much lens flare and not nearly enough visual focus. And both eps had way too many quick cuts between angles for me.

Metalder 9-10: real good stuff. -made me feel bad for hedogross which is an accomplishment with that suit. i have also known rhapsody for one entire ep but i love this violin playing music bot.

Metalder 11: Bigwayne... behold the first and so far only episode of toku to make me cry real-ass tears. i got so fucking emotional over this old man robot. fuck i’m tearing up thinking about it. it’s also a real neat episode too. no real face actors in it as well. goddamn.

Again, I’m not saying that Hayakawa running off to deal with his grief alone without even so much as a goodbye to his cop partner in any way influenced the ending of Kuuga

And now we’ve got a good and bad guy both with the same superpowers in their final battle (one episode after first meeting), worn down and reduced to stumbling around and trading punches

I can’t believe “worried cop boyfriend rushes up mountain hoping to catch his hero boyfriend’s final battle with a sadistic stronger villain whose name begins with D” is a situation that occurs more than once

while kaiketsu zubat might be patently ridiculous it also looks nicer in terms of shot composition than just about every other 70s toku i’ve seen and i gotta give props for that

And this is all introduced in the only way you can bring this stuff into a story otherwise completely unconnected to it: with complete, unflinching sincerity

It’s interesting that Miyauchi has such a reputation for being “badass” in some corners of the fandom because yes, his stuntwork is impressive and done apparently fearlessly, but it comes with absolutely none of the… stoicism, to be generous (emotional constipation to be honest), that the term connotes.

His charisma comes not just from doing cool stuff, but from feeling feelings so openly and intensely that you get swept right up in them. It would be easy enough to play this scene with Ken singing to mask his feelings (with them peeking dramatically through somewhere of course, but only for a moment) but it’s presented ehre as him singing to express them, and that raw grief does a lot to keep this alienatingly perfect and skilled character accessible

He has inhuman skill, but he himself is painfully human. If you know how Miyauchi behaved on sets at all, you know this wasn’t something handed don from above that he went along with. Ken being a raw bundle of feelings was all him, and yet for some folks his reputation is “aw yeah, fight scenes”
