I get that people dislike Hifumi for insulting Gentaro but why do they ignore the fact that Dice did the same thing with Doppo?
This is a personal opinion question, so I can’t speak on behalf of people. But here are the reasons that I could think of.
1. People may like Dice more so can forgive him for that, or people may not like Hifumi as much so are more critical of him.
2. Hifumi is the one who ‘started it’. Hifumi was completely unprovoked and then started to insult Gentaro. Hifumi’s someone who usually lacks tact and doesn’t pick up on cues of things that shouldn’t be said - hence how he’s said a few things to Doppo that make him angry sometimes too.
I for one am biased in wanting to forgive Hifumi because he’s my favourite character, and he actually apologises too. The part where Dice says “you make me sick” is most likely referring to earlier where Hifumi pushed Gentaro a little further when he was already starting to break down, rather than at the apology. But you can see that he does shown genuine regret.
Because Gentaro’s pain from being insulted was ‘less’ than Doppo, who only bowed his head, people think that because Gentaro suffered more believe that what Hifumi did was worse in comparison. Thus Dice had justification to yell at them harshly.
3. People are likely to justify Dice over Hifumi because of who Dice is if they think of him at this moment in time. I think Dice’s anger at Doppo is a testament of how he’s grown up. Like his mother, he hates the idea of taking hits lying down, so seeing Doppo like that is the exact opposite of what he wants to be. In addition to this, Doppo isn’t the one who should be apologising - it’s Hifumi. It’s annoying to see someone cover for someone else who did bad.
When someone constantly apologises to you, at a point words do lose meaning. What he’s saying isn’t wrong, whereas Hifumi insulted someone for no reasons - he wasn’t annoyed at all and simply ‘picked on’ (using the word loosely because he didn’t have bad intent) on Gentaro who hadn’t bothered him. So to simplify, Gentaro had done nothing to piss anyone off, while Hifumi and Doppo supposedly did, so that’s why Dice gets ‘free reign’ to say what he wants. People just felt a greater emotional connection to Dice than Hifumi in this scene.
TLDR: Forgiving Dice or Hifumi in this instance is subjective. There’s no right or wrong in forgiving them, but Hifumi did technically start the fight, so that’s why he may get more heat for this instance than Dice who defended his friend first.
