Whirlwind my beloved <3 She's creating a black hole that will devastate thousands! What a gal!
Another oldie but I'm still happy with the colors on this one so I will post it here. She's so cute she's always been one of my favorites. I need to draw more Skylanders again...
The Voyager 1 has regained contact with the Earth after temporarily switching off its X-Band radio to conserve power in interstellar space. It switched to its S-Band back-up radio, which hasn't been used since 1981, in an attempt to still contact NASA. It is estimated that some time around 2025 the twin Voyager probes will no longer be able to use their scientific instruments.
I have this book about the cosmos from 1988 ('91 for the polish translation) and it has a bunch of spacecraft included in it, and this evening i wanted to share them all with you.
Illustrated by Brian Delf and Luciano Corbella.
vvv (verylongpost my bad)
first up we have... curiously unnamed space telescope that is definitely not Hubble. Slightly different shape for the aperature cover door!
Ariane 3
Full two pages dedicated to shuttles! many tiny drawings. For some reason the book calls them "Kosmoplan" (cosmoplane). Please excuse the scribbles. this book was the property of a bunch of unruly kids, including me. They wont go away.
Intelsat 5 (big and small)
Various different spacecraft types, including IRAS, Landsat 5, NOAA-8 and Navstar 1
and a tiny molniya :)
What i assume is either Westar 6 or Palaba B-2 being retrieved. but honestly idk it could be some other bullshit.
Baby Mir! and Soyuz, naturally
Lunokhod 1/2! The crosshatching is particularly yummy here (astronauts that go to the moon are called "selenonauts" in here, which seems is a polish/slavic exclusive term?)
not spacecraft but heres a very lovely spread of a part of our solar system. Really good sense of scale here, with how you can barely even see the curvature of our sun
Speaking of the sun, here's the Solar Maximum Mission! thats the one they repaired on STS-41-C
next up, Mariner 10 and a Venera lander sharing a page
BEEAAAUTIFUL full page spread of a Viking lander
Pioneer 10/11, but ever so slightly implied 10 thru the text. Yippie! hi Tenny!
weirdly turquoise Voyager 1 and 2. Curious bit is how info about neptune couldve only been added with the translation, since it mentions the '89 flyby like its a thing that already happened.
Giotto... thats peepaw hell yea (And the only ESA probe in the book 🥹)(ig it was a different time)
Einstein Observatory (HEAO-2)
VLA!!! VLA!!! VLA!!!!!!!!!! GLEE!!! (also i really like how everything on this page is laid out im ngl. have i already mentioned this is a gorgeous book?)
...
aaand im at the image limit. theres a few more things i wanted to share, but ill do it some other (near!) time
Rudy's going to be an artist for this zine with his colourful artwork! Trust me his piece is going to be incredible. You can see more of his artwork and content at @primesquib
Cute fact: Baby Dragons often develop an habit to climb bigger dragons to perch on their shoulder as their safe spot. Also can be an indicator of which elder they share the closest parental bond with.
