Off the grid cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains
Built by Jeff Waldman / @jeffreywaldman:
The cabin faces out on a southern facing slope on 10 acres. We started clearing and prepping the site a year and a half ago, six months after buying the property, but didn’t actually break ground until this spring.
We spent about a year salvaging the big door and over half the windows, which we designed the cabin around. The rest of the design was informed mostly by our capabilities, having never designed or built anything of this magnitude before, and by the constraints and logistics of the site and property.
The cabin is 14×20 feet with a 7×13 foot loft. Given our temperate climate, the small footprint of the cabin was deliberately tripled by its comparatively larger deck, with the intention of opening the two large doors most of the year, so that the deck and cabin can function as a singular larger space. The redwood timbers and siding came from a neighboring sawyer. The yet to be totally completed interior is mostly plywood with exposed doug fir timbers. The loft floor is made from slabs of madrone we milled — trees cleared from the cabin site.
100 feet down the trail is an outhouse, previously featured on Cabin Porn. The weekend property, shared communally among friends, also features a series of suspended tree decks, elevated outdoor shower, wood fired hot tub and host of camp activities.
