Instead of SOTR being another book about propaganda (and definitely the worst book about it the the series), I think it should have been about class consciousness. In D12, there's a strong sense of community, but even so, there is a clear class divide. Relative to the seam, town people are richer, and likely have better access to basic necessities. Their work is safer, too. The kids there likely only take out 1 possibly 2 tesserae, if any at all. In comparison, people from the seam are miners. They live in small, derelict houses around the area of the town, closer to the mine. They have no choice but to become miners, a job with a high casualty rate and doesn't pay well at all. The children take out far more tesserae (e.g. Gale with 5). They are far more likely to lose family members. Whether it's starvation, or mine accidents, or being reaped. This goes into headcannon territory a bit, but I imagine that a lot of resentment would have built up in the seam to the town. When the first quell was announced, people had to pick sides. It likely became the seam vs the town, and since the seam is so much larger, the tributes would have been from the town. The second quell would have brought up memories from the past, especially considering that the people who would have had to vote probably have family that are in the reaping for this one. This'll have stirred up conflict again, and could have given Haymitch and Maysilee's alliance a really interesting quality, and actually give the book something decent to work with.

I finished sotr a while back and liked it, but rereading it I got some kinda book post nut clarity and realised it completely sucked. The writing was laughably bad in places and the dialogue was unreadable.

First of all, I can't stand Lenore Dove. I tried so hard to like her, but it felt so forced every time she was mentioned. I get it's hard to give them a compelling relationship when the only time they really get to talk is before the reaping, but she didn't feel likeable at all? Her poem being shoved into any place possible didn't help much either. She's supposed to be rebellious and inspire Haymitch, yet comes off as a less interesting Lucy Grey. I didn't get much personality from her aside from the fact she's rebellious and a manic pixie dream girl. I skimmed past most of Haymitch grieving her because I just didn't care. Especially when he had his literal brother and mother dead too, and didn't even mention it?!

The plot to blow up the arena was stupid too. I hated how Beetee was introduced, it's clear she wanted to get introductions out of the way asap so she could get straight to the rebellion, but it made him look like an idiot. Why would he trust some random kid from an irrelevant district to help him and his son? I do think the idea of Beetee having to mentor his son is actually pretty interesting, and a lot could've been done with it, but we had to get the stupidest idea ever. All the 'good' characters had to be sanitised to oblivion, too. Wyatt can't be involved with the betting back home, that's too cruel. He has to separate himself and just be an oddsmaker, which is a shame because the betting wasn't explored in any of the other books and it would've been nice to know more. Maysilee can't actually be mean, all she does is make a few snide remarks to the careers and call out Haymitch once or twice. Wiress, a literal victor, can't have actually killed anyone. She just hid the whole time until the last guy accidentally kills himself. I get that she's not much of a fighter, but she's smart. She could have done something like lead him off a cliff or towards mutts? I can get Mags not being a career, if they werent in the 10th games I doubt they'd be in 11, but she still mentored them, and likely was part of training them back in 4.

On the flip side, all the 'bad' characters had to be straight up evil. Especially the careers, at the end of the day they're kids too, and Silka's whole thing about honouring the Capitol at the end was unnecessary and made her look stupid. I don't like the newcomers' alliance either. I think it's pretty unrealistic for all 32 of them to have joined up together and nobody wanted to stay alone or turned their back on them. I didn't like the naming thing either, and the way they spoke to each other felt childish. I can get the younger kids (12/13) acting like that, but a lot of them were 16-18, and I doubt they'd want to be in an alliance with kids that young anyway. It's not like they'd be hard to fight off. The Louella and Lou-Lou stuff could have been interesting, but nothing really came from it. I feel like it was such a cool idea but SC never went anywhere with it so she just killed her off to end it. I get that district 12 is small, but it's not so small that all of the characters know each other AND have already met their future partners. It's also funny to notice the only characters we saw again were fan favourites. Where's Mr Hawthorne? Literally anyone else? Sometime soon I’m gonna break this up into a bunch of different posts but for now I’ll leave it like this
