What I expected to see in Footloose (1984) based on the artifacts it's left in pop culture: a light-hearted, semi-campy flick about youthful rebellion (think like a predecessor to the High School Musical franchise) featuring a two-dimensional villain who just "doesn't understand the kids, man" and Kevin Bacon doing gymnastics alone in a warehouse.
What I actually saw in Footloose (1984): a dramatic, profound meditation on how grief can drive a wedge in between family members, the use of Christianity as a tool of oppression (particularly in small-town Midwestern U.S.), and how conservativism can rise up as a trauma response. And also Kevin Bacon doing gymnastics alone in a warehouse.
“When I did Hook, Bob Hoskins and I were rehearsing, and suddenly we looked at each other and realized it at the same time. We said, “These guys are gay!” Hook and Smee are a couple of old queens, and it was fun. Suddenly we rehearsed it that way. “Get over here, Smee. Give me a foot massage.” […] They were really good friends. They lived on a ship. They were devoted to each other.” - Dustin Hoffman

(and promises Kevin isn't making her say these things loll. the show actually kinda reminded me of her and her story)
Just watched Wonder Man.
Gotta say, maybe the Simon Williams is gay truthers from the last few decades of comics made some points. You guys saw what I didn’t see until now.
The metaphor in superhero media of hiding your powers equating to hiding your queerness has never been as obvious as it is in this show. I don’t even particularly think Simon wants to fuck that old man (but there’s definitely some romantic subtext that can be read into that relationship if you want to see it that way) but the whole thing with his powers, and the conversation with his ex, and just the storyline itself feels queer to me. Simon just feels like a closeted queer man to me.
Also it’s just a genuinely great show that was well written and well acted and well shot. So much so that I completely forgot it’s in the MCU. Definitely the best thing to come out of the MCU in years.

One detail I think is rather interesting is how I feel like Huntress Wizard and Simon are shown having rather contrasting approaches/mentalities in how they try to help Finn.
When Huntress Wizard finds Finn injured, she immediately takes him back to her place to try and help him all by herself. The only reason she even seeks out Simon is after learning that he can give her information on what happened to Finn. And after learning that information, HW does not bother to tell Simon anything apart from ‘forget everything you just heard’ and immediately charges off to the Heart of the Forest with what was clearly only a barely-thought-out plan to help Finn.
On the other hand, Simon promptly ignores what HW told him and enlists Pep and his other students to find any information on the Heart that could help Finn while also calling Princess Bubblegum and Marceline for further help. With the former immediately sending the Banana Guard to get Finn to the Candy Kingdom where she will be clearly devoting everything she can to help Finn.
I think the contrast here is pretty clear: Huntress Wizard is laser-focused on trying to help Finn all by herself and apparently not even thinking of asking for help. Simon meanwhile IMMEDIATELY tries to get all the help he can, reaching out to all of Finn’s other close friends, who in turn immediately start doing everything they can to help.
Heck, going off these first two episodes I get the sense that Huntress Wizard has never really become part of Finn’s close circle of longtime friends? At the beginning of episode 1 we learn that PB and Marcie didn’t even know that Finn and HW were ‘on again’, and that Marceline doesn’t have HW’s number. And later, Huntress Wizard needing a moment to clarify the ‘Simon’ that Finn is talking about feels like a pretty good indicator that she and Simon aren’t on any kind of first-name acquaintance. Basically, I think Huntress Wizard only really knows ANY of Finn’s other friends through Finn and has never become any kind of friends with any of them herself. Which certainly lines up with everything we’ve seen of her. Again, even her relationship with Finn has only ever been a pretty casual, on-and-off fling.
And given how Huntress Wizard’s clearly half-assed plan to charge off to help Finn all on her own completely, and quite literally, blows up in her face, combined with the parallels Fionna’s arc we see in the same episode, I feel like this could all be implying something rather interesting:
Given the very clear developing theme of ‘Needing to learn how to accept help from others’, what if it’s ultimately NOT Huntress Wizard who saves Finn, but instead the combined efforts of Simon, Pep, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, plus any number of Finn’s other close friends? Just look at Simon’s reassurance to Fionna at the end of the episode; “He’s got a lot of people pulling for him”, not to mention Fionna’s rather unsettlingly projecting question of “What if they give up on him?” combined with what she later tells Baby Finn. It all gives the impression that Simon knows what he’s doing while Fionna has a lot of personal misconceptions to work though.
And let’s further consider the fact that it was this very conversation with Simon that inadvertently drew Huntress Wizard TO Fionna. Someone who right now seems to need just as much help as Finn does with a deeply ingrained belief that her friends wants and needs are what matter and what she wants doesn’t matter at all. The difference being that unlike Finn, Fionna’s own close circle of friends DON’T know that she needs help, and Fionna is clearly never going to be asking them for any. Meaning that Fionna probably could use help from someone with the same kind of dogged determination that Huntress Wizard has shown towards trying to help Finn, misguided it may have been.
So what if it’s not Finn who Huntress Wizard ends up saving by the end of the season, but instead FIONNA?
💬 0 🔁 5 ❤️ 37 · Since it seems many if not most of us seem to be in agreement about Fionna’s imminent induction into the same monoplegic c
Both by helping her with her personal self-worth issues and maybe giving her a replacement arm, and who knows what else.
(and yes, I definitely consider this to be Fionntress foreshadowing XD)
One particularly interesting thing I’ve started thinking about is the subtle differences we’ve seen between Fionna and Finn outside of a simple genderbending or the ripple effects of having her world de-magic’d.
For example, their present approaches to romantic relationships.
When we look back at the later seasons of Adventure Time, I think it’s pretty clear that Finn’s potential romantic interest was greatly deemphasized, to the point where by the end of the series and going into Fionna and Cake, I feel like Finn is simply no longer interested in romance the way he was in the early parts of the series. Hence his continued casual, on-and-off relationship with Huntress Wizard.
By contrast, it seems that Fionna has much more overt and conventional romantic yearnings. As of the start of her series, it seems that Fionna’s relationship with DJ Flame was relatively much more recent than Finn’s relationship with Flame Princess, Fionna was later close to being swept off her feet by the Winter King, and most recently seems to have developed a very obvious crush on Hunter.
And this contrast gets even more interesting when we start analyzing Fionna’s relationships and how they also contrast to Finn’s. As in, it seems like it hasn’t just been the genders that have been flipped, but the relationship dynamics have been switched around as well.
Whereas Finn was a manipulative asshole to Flame Princess, it looks like DJ Flame was the insensitive jackass to Fionna. And I think it is very easy to imagine much the same reversal happening with Fionna and Hunter compared to Finn and Huntress Wizard. Indeed, I think we may have already seen some hints to it.
You may recall back during the first season, a number of people noted that Hunter actually seemed a fair bit different from Huntress Wizard, namely that he seems much more relaxed, mellow, zen and doesn’t really have the unhinged hyperfocus that we see from HW.
The funny thing is, now I can’t help but think Hunter’s whole vibe feels less like Huntress Wizard, and more like late-series Finn. Heck, his body-type even has a vaguely similar build to Finn by the time of Fionna and Cake! Which in turn plays perfectly into Fionna’s clear parallels to Huntress Wizard this season.
And when we look back at when Finn and Huntress Wizard kinda-sorta hooked up at the end of Flute Spell, I think we get a VERY interesting setup:
While Finn admits that he was very much had a yearning for HW, it is Huntress Wizard who makes the much more overt expression of her own yearning for Finn, and may indeed have even had the stronger affections. And after HW goes on her whole ‘I think hard meat don’t get eat’ spiel, it’s Finn who elects to keep their relationship lowkey and casual with that whole ‘Take it easy, Huntress Wizard’ line.
So I think it’s all too easy to imagine that Fionna and Hunter will get their own version of this scene, except with the positions switched. After all, we’ve already seen that Fionna has a much more clear and overt crush on Hunter, so it only makes sense that she could make the first move just like Huntress Wizard did.
Except that in the context of Fionna and Cake’s setting, I feel like this could all go a lot WORSE for Fionna than it did for Finn. After all, Fionna doesn’t have that engrained fear of getting close to people that let Huntress Wizard be much more accepting of a casual fling.
As in, with a combination of Huntress Wizard’s aloofness and late-series Finn’s disinterest in romance, I think it is actually all too easy to imagine that Hunter drops an ‘I just want to be friends’ on Fionna following any kind of big confession. Likely even complete with an echo of Finn’s own words as Hunter says “Take is easy, Fionna.”
After all, we still have the intro showing both DJ Flame AND Hunter juxtaposed with a VERY upset Fionna, giving a pretty major indicator that Fionna’s crush on Hunter ends BADLY.
And what’s REALLY cool/fun/interesting about all this is that it kind of PERFECTLY sets up Fionna and Huntress Wizard? As in, after all these role-reversals, we are left with Fionna and Huntress Wizard effectively BOTH wanting the SAME THING! They are both left as the ones yearning for a close, emotional and intimate connection with another person, which they can in turn find in EACH OTHER. The only real difference is HW being a lot more repressed/in-denial about it, which is exactly the thing a season of character bonding and romantic setup can break her out of.
Heck, it could even sort of play into Fionna’s and Huntress Wizard’s interaction in the opening? Fionna being overjoyed at finding a connection and partner she’s always yearned for, while Huntress Wizard is confused and unsure in a very ‘currently unrepressing some feelings’ way.
