Chapter 7: Ice Cream / Free Day
Mel slotted herself between her men and sat on Viktor's lap, impeding his ability to work.
His arm wrapped around her back automatically to steady her, but he kept scrawling on the notepad without being able to see what he was writing, because he'd already started that thought and there would be no stopping him until it was done.
She wasn't sure Jayce had even noticed she was there; he was drawing on a different notepad.
Eventually, Viktor realized he couldn't see the notepad anymore, and he blinked at her absently. "Mel?" He looked around, still slightly dazed. "How long have you been sitting here?"
She laughed. "Only a few minutes."
"Oh. Good. Should I get Jayce's attention as well?"
"That would be nice, thank you."
"Of course." Viktor didn't deal in subtle. He reached over and pulled the notepad out from under Jayce's pencil.
"Hey! I was still-- Oh. Hi, Mel." Jayce grinned at her "Sorry. Mad scientists at work, you know how it is."
"I do," she agreed, because she'd accepted this when she'd agreed to move in with them.
"What can we do for you, Ms. Medarda?" Viktor asked.
"We're going home tomorrow," Mel said.
"Yeah," Jayce said. "Looking forward to it, really."
"Me, too," Mel agreed, because over the past two weeks, Elora had unblocked her number exactly twice to text: All is going well. You may ask me ONE question and then I'm blocking you again.
Mel trusted Elora, of course she did, but she needed to be back in the office. And she knew that Viktor and Jayce felt that same need to be back in the lab.
Still, they had one more day of vacation. She brushed her fingers through Viktor's hair. His habit of playing with it absently when he was working had left it ruffled and slightly tangled, and she smoothed it back down for him. "I want a last hurrah," she told them.
