Katsuki has been captured by the new and improved league of villains. It was 2 AM in the goddamn morning, and they somehow got him out of his dorm room in a panicked rush before kidnapping him.
At first, Tomura tries to win over Katsuki with words again. Katsuki is not let out of his restraints this time, he’s blindfolded and they’re trying to scare him into it, but he’s not having any of it. He curses Tomura out multiple times, threatens all of them at least once, and steadfastly refuses to join them.
Tomura planned for this though, and they have a new villain on their side. Namely, one of Shinsou’s biological parents. The one he gets his quirk from. This parent has mind control too, though theirs is different from Shinsou’s. Theirs is less precise and doesn’t give them completely control, but it’s more permanent. Particularly with repeated exposure.
However, like Shinsou’s, it still requires vocal commands and vocal response to work. Tomura offers Katsuki one last chance to join them willingly and he keeps making increasingly creative and specific threats, so they bring in the mind control.
Once Tomura gives the villain the go ahead, they say something to Katsuki to initiate the mind control.
Predictably, Katsuki curses them out in response. And then…. nothing happens. The villain tries again, and again, Katsuki curses them out, and again, they can’t even establish a connection. They repeat the attempt 3-4 times, with the villain testing their powers on someone else to ensure it’s not something on their end. For some reason, Katsuki just seems to be immune.
Dabi has been watching all of this, and honestly he’s had some suspicions for awhile now, but he’s been paying close attention to Katsuki’s threats and replies. Before Tomura loses his shit on the mind control villain, Dabi pipes up and says something plain weird.
He gets cursed out by Katsuki.
He tells Katsuki he’ll let him go if he stays quiet for a solid minute.
He tells Katsuki he has just collected three hostages and he is going to kill them if Katsuki says anything.
Katsuki curses him out again.
At which point, Dabi is now sure of what’s going on. He pulls the blindfold off Katsuki and signs to him,
“I’m not sure if I’m impressed you kept the act up for that long, or disappointed it took us this long to figure it out.”
Katsuki, who is very tired, disoriented, freaked out being in an enemy based without his hearing aids, replies on instinct
“I have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about.”
He only realizes several seconds afterwards that by responding he’s given away that he understands Dabi’s signing, and pretty much confirmed his theory .So, while Katsuki can hear things well enough to roughly make out sounds around him, he’s HOH enough that he can’t make out words without his hearing aids.
Like, at all. He was only able to tell someone was talking to him because the rest of the room was very quiet and his responses were based on educated guesses and little glimpses out of the bottom of the blindfold. Since they kidnapped him at like 2 AM, he didn’t have his hearing aids in, and he doesn’t have them on him. He hasn’t heard a single damn word any of them have said.
Dabi just breaks down laughing because the look on Tomura’s face as he realizes what’s going on is the funniest thing he’s seen all year.
So beyond making the past six or so hours a total waste, this also means Tomura’s big plan to make Katsuki join him, which he was very proud of, is totally useless. Even if they get Katsuki his hearing aids, Shinsou’s/his parents quirk doesn’t work when transmitted electronically, which is what hearing aids do.
Tomura meanwhile is torn between being upset that his plan didn’t work, and also embarrassed because ah fuck, he’s been asshole standing here lecturing and taunting Katsuki when the kid had no idea what he was saying. This isn’t the impression he wanted to make on his new recruit. Like, he’s evil and kills people and all that but he doesn’t want to be ablest about kidnapping and trying to threaten a kid into joining his gang.
There’s about 15 minutes of chaos as they try to figure out what to do about this, with Dabi halfheartedly translating the other villains for Katsuki, until he finally tells Tomura to just get a piece of paper and write it down.
Tomura does, taking awhile to write out his big recruitment speech he gave earlier, gives it to Katsuki feeling very proud of himself for finding a way around this issue, and Katsuki takes ones look at the paper, realizes what it is, looks right back up at Tomura,
And he just fucking eats the paper.
No hesitation. No thought put into it. Just CHOMP. He makes eye contact with Tomura the entire time too.
Dabi loses his shit. 5 minutes later the heroes bust in to save Katsuki, finding Tomura shell-shocked and unable to cope with the fact he was just destroyed by the 16 year old he kidnapped, Dabi still on the ground laughing, and the rest of the league somewhere between the two reactions.
