this is like basic foundational misogyny 101 but the fact that it's almost unconsciously ingrained to consider trousers a more "practical" alternative to skirts across the majority of human cultures does make me feel a little kicked in the head. this isn't even anything against pants, or denying that sometimes they are the best suited garment for purpose, it's just that skirts are nearly always unfairly compared as the a frivolous option, even though they're functionally not dissimilar at all. they're comfortable, capable of being tailored to suit a variety of purposes both aesthetic and functional, and simply what some people prefer. and yet, because they're so strongly tied to women and femininity, they're derided. a long skirt is an impediment; shortening a skirt is a sexual act. throughout history humans of all demographics have worn skirts and skirt-like clothing for a variety of purposes, but to wear a skirt in our enlightened modern age is a heavily gendered and politically loaded notion. and we just tolerate living like this. fucking unreal.

I’d like to agree with everything here and also add this: skirts being viewed as the less practical option has led them to *become* less practical.

People used to do pretty much everything you can imagine in what we would now consider a skirt. Farming, hunting, foraging, crafting, traveling; it was all done by many people in many different cultures wearing something skirt-like. And sure, some of that was simply each individual making do with what they had access to; but a lot of that was intentional design.

These were people who made their own clothes and used them daily. They weren’t just endlessly mimicking a pattern given them to by some more powerful cultural force and wearing it uncritically; they could, and did, adapt to their surroundings. What I’m saying is: people did all of these tasks in clothing that was at least somewhat adapted to the situation in which it needed to be worn.

But now, in the West at least, skirts are seen as frivolous. You wear them when you’re dressing up, or when you want to be feminine and pretty; they aren’t workwear. And so, of course, they aren’t *designed* to be workwear. They’re made of cheap, delicate fabrics; they don’t breathe or move or resist tearing; they’re meant to be fashion, not a functional item.

The best example of this I can give is pockets. Until very recently, it was HARD to find a shirt or dress with pockets. Do you think that a person from *any* of the cultures I referenced previously would’ve stood for that?

Do you think they would’ve spent dozens of hours and very limited fabric stock to make a skirt meant to get them through gardening, cleaning, childcare, visiting the market and more that would have no way to store anything? Of course not.

Skirts being less functional is a self-fulfilling prophecy. We see skirts as less useful; so they became exactly that.

Counterpoint: maybe pearls are like tattoos or piercings for oysters. Tattoos and piercings are created by a foreign object introduced into the body too.

Some absolutely unhinged things going on in the Dark Romance community this week

I should probably put “Dark Romance” in air quotes because the author being discussed (Miranda Grant) doesn’t really write dark romance, even if she says she does. It’s really just badly written splatterpunk horror erotica… that tries to get away with some truly vomit-inducing depictions of CSA, rape, mutilation, etc.

The book that caught everyone’s attention most recently is Madness Behind the Mask, though her other books have gotten criticism too. The first few chapters are full of SA, and the protagonist is literally a child the entire time. You are made very aware of that fact.

She’s very gleeful that this “”triggers”” people who “couldn’t handle it.” Her fans on FB and Goodreads treat getting through it like a trophy, and publicly post about wishing it were “even darker.”

She also claims that her work is meant to help CSA victims, and while I don’t doubt that seeing things that have happened to you be described and then the perpetrator punished… there’s just a lot more going on here, imho.

It’s hard to explain how vile it all is (and I do NOT recommend you go read it unless you want to have a particularly grim day.) What a terrible day to be literate

I need more Ilya out freaking other players when they chirp about his relationship. Some hockey player says "you're just Hollander's little bitch" and he answers "yes we have leash and collar with my name" in such a straight face no one can tell if it's a joke or if he's serious. Or he makes a goal and someone says "does he reward you for being good later" and he says "yeah I'm only allowed to cum when I score".

I mght actually end up writing this if I can figure out better/more examples.

Sometimes it seems to be emphasis, but… you wouldn’t put emphasis on Officer in this sentence? Same as when people put them around birthday in ‘happy birthday’. It clearly means something to them but I cannot figure out what
