Creating a Stallion Book

I need your help, fellow Heartland fans. As many of my followers know, I’ve embarked on a project; namely, making the Fairfield Stables website a fandom reality. 

I’d like to have more active links to content as seen on the site in the Strange Bedfellows episode. This includes the Fairfield Stallion Book. 

Here is an example of what such a thing looks like: Weatherbys Stallion Book 2017 so you get an idea. It’s extensive and involved, and crazy, but all the same, I’d like to make one up for Fairfield. So, here is your mission, should you choose to accept it! Make up a horsey name and its pedigree, give it some attributes, along with some nice accomplishments. If you can find a rights-free image to go along, congratulations! Your horse has made it into Lisa’s Stallion Book I’m creating for the website.

Review of Ep. 1106: Strange Bedfellows

(Cross-posted over on Facebook.) So the goat and the Thoroughbred are inseparable, eh? Love it! Jack and Lisa do belong together, don’t they? What? You thought I was talking about Fairfield Flyer and “Floppy”? I think the parallels between the animals and the humans were obvious. I may be a weirdo, but I remember WAY back to Season 1 when we first met Lisa: Scott tells Amy that Lisa’s a “bit of a Thoroughbred herself”. And we all know Jack has referred to himself as an “old goat”, so there you have it. I was quite frankly upset at Lisa’s attitude about the cloning issue. Her presumption that the Association would come ‘round one day just like the Olympics and the sport of Polo did is not the greatest defense. Cloning isn’t illegal, but it just seemed weird she would go to that expense when it’s not sanctioned for race horses by (what I can only assume to be) the Heartland universe’s version of the Jockey Club (which strictly forbids clones from being registered). But I digress. The cloning issue served to create some very unpleasant tension between anti-horse-cloning Amy, and the financially strapped Lisa. These two are so rarely at odds, this was painful to see. I’m thankful Miracle Girl Amy was able to not only get to the root of the problem, but to find a solution, as serendipitous as it was. Also glad to see Lisa’s gratitude, so all’s well that ends well on that front. I’m not going to even touch the Mitch and Lou plot point, because it just frustrates me too much, and I’ve ranted about it enough in other quarters. Jen! (Last name for Jen? Anyone?) Jen is turning out to be one of the best new characters on the show in recent memory. Ms. Durupt is just extremely likable in the role. She seems to be the only one who can handle Lou, which is a feat in itself, and worthy of praise. Her double-duty handling of Maggie’s and the Dude Ranch also seems to answer a question that was never addressed in any capacity on-camera: Lisa is clearly no longer involved in the Dude Ranch’s operations. Hmm. Wonder when that change occurred, and what happened to her portion of the business. (Did Lou buy her out? Tim? Huh? I don’t know. Someone help me remember before I lose my Heartland cred for good.) Georgie and Wyatt. As others have said, I’m glad they’re not rushing things. The attraction is mutual, but they are already handling their stuff in a more mature way than the all-we-know-to-do-is-kissface Mitch and Lou. (OOPS. Sorry. Said I wouldn’t talk about them. Sorry.) Wyatt’s serenading of Georgie was charming. (Dempsey Bryk has a pretty good voice!) Good on Wyatt for not being all embarrassed to get up there and sing a song to a girl he likes. It wasn’t even on a dare! Bet he’s been learning the ukulele for the sole purpose of impressing her. Hehehe. Nice that Adam and Wyatt could hit it off and bond over an obscure band and vinyl. Loved that Jack and Lisa were able to make up after their blow up. Emotions were running way too high as Lisa’s situation reached boiling point. I’m not sure how long the sale of Fairfield Flyer will keep things afloat for Lisa, but I hope she doesn’t lose the family farm. Heartland may indeed be “home”, but the ties to Fairfield are strong. We’ll see what goes on as the season progresses… Final thoughts: Katie’s enthusiastic “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” when Lou said she could stay at Heartland was interesting. It was like the kid was dreading going back to NYC, despite Lou’s contention she loved being there. Ty’s brief “Parlay” chat. Too brief, but nice he’s able to check in with his family. Keep saving the world, one wolf at a time, Ty.

I threatened to do it, and here’s the first stages. Yeah, it’s a work in progress. I’ve had to make some compromises on font style and image choice, since the video quality isn’t that great for copying (and of course I couldn’t find a header with the exact tree-lined shot of Fairfield that was used in the episode for the website, but this was good enough, I think). The closest font is Times New Roman, but it’s not exact, and I can’t quite get the kerning to behave. But that’s okay. I’m going to see if I can borrow someone’s server space to make the site “live” when I’m through putting it together on Muse, just so some of the links are interactive and click-able, etc.

Another Quick Thought on 1106

The Thoroughbred and the Goat

Lisa was once referred to by Scott as being “a bit of a Thoroughbred”.

Jack has self-deprecatedly referred to himself as an “old goat”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the paralells between the characters (Lisa and Jack) and the animals (Fairfield Flyer and the prized goat) were very deliberate in this episode.

Finished watching a minute ago (thanks to CBC’s tech wizards for posting it already).

The Cloning Issue

Not at all pleased with Lisa’s attitude. Oh, yes, the Olympics allow it and polo, etc., and in some nebulous future that Lisa has no say in, the “Association” (the Heartland universe’s version of the Jockey Club) will come around. Great logic, Lisa. But whatever. It truly isn’t like she did anything illegal; I just didn’t like her presumption.

In the end, the cloning thing didn’t even matter, so I’m puzzled as to why it was even a plot point. Nathan, the buyer, was aware Flyer was a clone. Lisa’s biz was not going to be jeopardized on that account; rather, she didn’t want her financial troubles being made public.

I’m just happy the episode ended the way it did… more to come later, as I gotta take off for the next little while.

First quick thoughts:

1. Glad I’m not the only parent who makes up goofy rhymes 🙃Now, I’d like to hear Ty since he’s apparently better at it 😄

2. Anyone else annoyed that Lou & Mitch have plenty of time for kissing, but not talking, so they she doesn’t even know if they’re back together or not?

3. I’m glad Jack said something about Lou being too busy in NY to take Katie & I can only hope that, at some point, someone will call her out on her hypocrisy that we’ve discussed.

I don’t think anyone likes the idea that Lisa could be a criminal. It would be a very sad and disappointing development. If they wanted to ruin the character, this would be one way to do it.

Sure wish that preview would come out so I could get a better sense of it. My Powers of Extrapolation are weak without it.

One thing I want to know: How do Amy and Georgie find out about it?

If they find out because they’re snooping around, anything is possible.

Lisa (if she were trying to hide under-handed activity) would never make it so easy for these two to discover.

I think we simply don’t have enough data, so I’m going to try to cease worrying about it.

The Jisa stuff in this episode is stuff I have wanted forever, but never allowed myself to hope for it too much. It was all so sweet and wonderful. I love them so much!

It’s one of those things you almost don’t even dare hope for, because, as you said, we’ve been burned before. I’m so happy Lisa has moved in. But I’m a wee bit tentative: is it permanent?

Or will she move back to Fairfield if things get better for her, financially?

And is this all she wrote in terms of Lisa’s bio?

The “back and forth to France and Fairfield” bit seems not to have been touched upon much in these four episodes, but the plans to salvage her business “falling through” (Toulon renters not paying up; buyer for the breeder dropping out) seem to have happened in this episode.

Lisa moving in with Jack at Heartland is definitely the “next step” in their relationship, but…

Is there more to come, or what?

To a non-horse-literate person like me (to my detriment), I would have been none the wiser about the breeds had I not been informed the horses used in the episode weren’t actually Przewalski’s horses, so I wasn’t bothered by it. Had this episode been a novel I was reading, the story would stand up on its own just fine. Can’t fault the crew of Heartland for not being able to get an actual *endangered* wild horse breed on the show. A genuine wild horse breed would be impossible to receive direction from the wranglers. ‘Nuff said.
