jfcjisun:
jisun had only been the golden child because he was the only male in the family. their mother ADORED him, while their father HATED him. Jisun acted out to spite their father, to get his attention and make him angry, or just react to him in any way. his mother doted on his every action, on the way he grew up to be a “stellar man worthy of being in charge” while his father saw a criminal, a junkie, a fluke. jisun HATED his father, and resented minhee for trying so hard to be him.
the arrest had been an accident. it was a new spot for jisun to be with his friends, and he hadn’t foreseen the stupid raid, the spot being a popular gang hideout, just as he was engaging in some… nefarious acts. but he had ended up at hongdae, the LAST place he wanted to be. it was bad enough that minhee was a better student than he was, now he had to deal with her in college too? sure he’d taken the vocal performance major up just to piss dear old dad off, but really? was the world against him or something?
jisun was sick of pretending to be the perfect little child gearing up to run the company. he didn’t WANT to run it. but his father was stuck in his stupid misogynistic ways and refused to let jisun defer it to minhee. fuck what his father thought anyway. he was going to have fun in college, hook up with lots of girls (and guys), and do whatever the fuck he wanted. he didn’t care about minhee’s pranks, barely noticing them anyways. the house was so large, there were often times they went DAYS without seeing each other.
he’d just come back from a friend’s house, his hair a mess and nose a bit red. he couldn’t help but notice the bag behind her back, a frown settling over his handsome features. “no. get back in the house.” he states, leaning against the wall.
minhee was definitely a daddy's girl. it wasn't that she didn't love her mom, or vice versa. it was just that her mother always favored jisun. once, when they were children, jisun had stuck a wad of bubblegum in minhee's hair. she was wailing for hours before their parents came home. when she finally calmed down enough to show her mother, song minyoung had already forgiven jisun. minhee's hair had to be cut like a boys to get all the gum out. but jisun never got in trouble with their mother, somehow it was always minhee's fault.
minhee sometimes wished that she would have been the rebellious teenager. what minhee really wants is to travel the world, but she would never get the chance because of jisun. her father would never let her leave korea, or jisun in a different city. she has been stuck in this weird role since birth. take care of jisun, be smart, be a lady. but don't be controlling, don't show off and don't try to take the family business. everything in her life was pre-determined by her father. occasionally she wonders what her life would be like if she was a boy. would she be the heir? would she be able to do what she wanted in life?
minhee's sexuality was obvious to anyone except her parents. she was very careful while picking sexual partners that no news would get back to her parents. her major of culinary arts was a pain to work out of her father. she promised that if she could go to university for whatever degree she wanted, she would go back in the future for a more practical one. baking had become minhee's outlet when she was seventeen. it being the only way to de-stress from being around jisun regularly.
when jisun got off the elevator he looked pretty rough. minhee wanted no part in whatever activities he had been getting up to whilst he was away. she scowled back at her brother, shaking her head. "no, i can leave whenever i want. and i want to leave now. you aren't me boss." since hiding the bag hadn't worked she just twisted it back across her torso. "i'm leaving, so don't die while i'm gone."
to say that minhee was jealous of her older brother was an understatement. she had lived in his shadows for her entire life. jisun got a good grade, jisun made a friend, jisun learned how to ride a bike. and what did you do today minhee? why can't you be more like your brother? sometimes, minhee wanted to scream. she wasn't jisun, and she was never going to be like him. that's why, when she was accepted into hongdae university on her own merits, she couldn't stop smiling. she had finally done something better than jisun. where even was jisun, when she made the announcement at dinner that night? minhee wishes she could go back to that moment. the pride in her father's eyes when she told them, it fueled her. occasionally, minhee has nightmares about that night. be it jisun storming in and ripping up her acceptance letter, or her father scowling at her.
when jisun was caught and ultimately arrested, she felt a sick sense of happiness. minhee was the one in college, staying out of trouble and being a good kid. jisun was the one that was getting caught snorting coke and mixing with the wrong crowds. in some sick, twisted turn of events, jisun ended up being one of the 'criminals' being sent to hongdae. minhee could not believe it. her precious safe haven, a place where she was the golden song child, being tainted by her brother and his criminal affiliates. minhee was devastated. jisun was never cut off from the family's money, so obviously he bought the penthouse next to the school. minhee was definitely jealous. she had been staying in the dorms to avoid wasting her allowance and jisun, the troubled one, got to just live alone. she was persuaded by their father to move in with jisun to keep an eye on him.
the reluctance and jealousy definitely translated in the way she would interact with her brother. jisun was a mess, both in his social life and in the way he lived. he was always leaving things around the house and never stocking the fridge with edible food. minhee was definitely tired of jisun inviting his friends or hookups over without telling her first. the worst part about living with her brother was that she could be as petty as she wanted, and he wouldn't care. at first, she was just acting out to get his attention, but it slowly progressed in to pure pettiness. she had covered his bed in plastic spoons, no reaction. putting his expensive fur jacket in the freezer? he just threw it on right out of the cold chamber. and she couldn't make the place a mess, because he already did that. she was literally stuck in the house with a robot, who never reacted to her stupid pranks.
minhee was exhausted when she came back to the penthouse. she decided to just go back home for a while to sort things out in her head. she packed a duffle bag and decided to leave a note for her brother. 'heading back home to see mom and dad, text me if you see this.' she wrote it out on a piece of paper from her bag and laid it on the coffee table. just as she was about to leave she ran back up to her room to lock the door. when she had moved in she made sure to add a lock to her door. she never knew who was coming home with jisun at any given time, so she made sure to always lock her bedroom. minhee checked her bag once more and made sure the door to her bedroom was locked before setting out towards the door. she had made it out the door and towards the elevators when jisun came out of one. she looked at him in surprise before subtly moving her bag behind her back.

LIVING ALONE HAS its perks. for starters, there aren’t five other people running around at all times, so that’s great. she can do whatever she wants, when she wants which is even better. and, you know – the quiet is nice. the independency is nice.
what isn’t nice is the low rumble of thunder, slowly getting louder with every passing moment. what isn’t nice is the rain pouring down, beating violently on the windows and knocking out the power. and, of course, she doesn’t have any candles – but, hopefully, her neighbours do.
so that’s how she finds herself out of her apartment, blindly grasping at the walls in attempt to make her way through the dark hallway. as she stands there in front of another’s door, clad in her black, paint-splattered hoodie and nearly blending in with the background, she asks herself – does she really need those candles? but she does have a sketch to finish and it does count in her final grade, so – before she can change her mind, she knocks twice and steps back.
MAKING THE DECISION to live with her brother wasn’t hard. in the beginning, it was due to jealousy. it just wasn’t fair that jisun got to live alone! but, when she started to attend hongdae university, it was convenient to live with her brother. her father also persuaded her, adding 500,000 won to her allowance for ‘keeping an eye on’ her brother.
what was hard was the near constant guests. she wasn’t the judgmental type, usually, but some of the people jisun brought home. you could say they weren’t exactly minhee’s style. she had learned early how to block out late night visitors slamming open the doors and being rowdy in the foyer.
that night was especially quiet, since it was raining. it was nearing ten at night when there were two knocks at the door. jisun’s friends usually didn’t knock, so minhee went to investigate. opening the door before checking to make sure it wasn’t a murderer was probably the worst decision minhee had made all day. alas, she had already swung the door wide open before thinking about her actions.
