Summary of music critic Kim Yongdae’s interview with BTS:
Initially he was given only 15 mins with BTS but the interview went past 30 mins cuz Namjoon/Yoongi requested it and Yongdae was very relieved
BTS are very polite and they said they were glad to meet him finally. He was flattered because he was meeting superstars
Yongdae had heard Yoongi doesn’t talk much but Yoongi responded to all questions respectfully
Namjoon is taller than he thought, very mature and thoughtful and has great perception and confidence about where BTS are headed and where they are from like a true leader
Seokjin didn’t speak much but his gaze was really intense from where he was sitting across Yongdae. Yongdae got flustered
Yoongi is very passionate. Yongdae asked him about his rap/mixtape since he believes Yoongi holds a very important role in BTS artistry
Yoongi answered his questions very frankly to the point Yongdae thought it’d be difficult to publish lol
Yoongi said that in the past he depended on external views and got hurt a lot but he’s changed. “Why do I need someone else’s approval? Why do I need your approval?” He doesn’t care about what other people think anymore
Yongdae said Yoongi is very mature and relatable even though he is younger
Yongdae got the feeling BTS still feel awe when people walk upto them and ask for pictures and signatures because they don’t think of themselves as huge stars 😫
Yongdae’s 1st thought when he saw Yoongi was ‘why’s Suga good at singing’, his viral statement after he heard HER. When Yongdae asked them if they knew that statement BTS laughed. Yoongi had no clue
Namjoon said it was similar to the viral Min butt incident. Yongdae asked what that meant and they froze and were unable to answer… Yongdae said Yoongi avoided talking after this 💀
Hoseok was the most positive and happy. He said lately he recognizes the importance of communication. He said no matter how high BTS soar he will always communicate with army
Jimin is very shy. Yongdae said maybe it had something to do with the presence of a music critic
“Within the group and relationships with the members, do you see anyone as a competitor despite the different vocal styles, etc.?” Jimin replied, that just because someone is younger than him, he does not feel unwilling or ashamed to ask for assistance. He said this types of conversations happen a lot.
Jungkook also said he doesn’t see other members of the vocal line as competitors. He didn’t place importance on the 'main vocal’ label but rather the skills behind. And this statement made Yongdae have lot of faith in BTS
Yongdae heard Singularity when it came out and he really loved the musicality and it left a deep impression on him and he was glad he got the chance to tell Taehyung so himself
Yongdae also said it was so good to see Taehyung’s growth in his vocals, that he was able to see various colours including a low-pitch voice ranging to a falsetto (something he doesn’t see much in idol music). Taehyung acted really, really modest and said things like “no it’s not that great!”
Yongdae said Taehyung was in the place to have so much pride in his accomplishments but his modesty really left an impression.
Yongdae said that of all their albums, Tear was the best yet. Namjoon said it was because vocal line had a lot of growth. The emotions Jin has in his vocals or his high notes, Taehyung’s vocal colour and wide vocal range. Jimin’s unique vocal colour and singing abilities, Jungkook’s skills as a main vocal. Namjoon said all this came together and filled each song so that there were no lacking parts
Namjoon also said the harmony was perfectly accomplished in Tear and placed vocal lines growth as the root of Tear’s success
Yongdae said BTS don’t see each other as competitors. Rather they motivate each other 😅
Yongdae said Jungkook is an amazing singer and Jungkook replied “Really? Thank you! ”
Yoongi said he personally doesn’t make and external credits.. What’s important to him is behind the scene discussions and decisions made to make great music
Yongdae said during BBMAs he received many dms and texts from fans worrying about BTS. Namjoon said “isn’t that kind of a motherly heart” he also said the fans gave brought them up 😭😭
When BTS get off stage they sometimes wonder if the fans really exist despite getting lots of cheers
Yongdae took a picture of BTS and is using it as his phone bg😫
He said the interview will not be published because his goal was to improve his critiques and perspective and he did it for personal understanding of music
