he smirked a little at their outburst, if only because it didn’t sound so offensive coming out of one so much smaller than him. not that he underestimated the other; he had watched them heal during his time in training, and anyone that could come back the way that they did from what they had suffered was stronger than most… well, everyone he knew. jai might be a dick (no, he was definitely an ass - there was no doubt about that at all), but he didn’t underestimate anyone.

“you made that promise to yourself, love,” he said, teasing them back with a light laugh. he moved back when he was sure the other wasn’t going to fall over into the street, where muggle vehicles passed by with no knowledge of the duos conversation. “i had nothing to do with it. i am a man of my word, after all.” he placed a hand on his chest as if he truly mean the words he was saying. they were, of course, bullshit, but mary didn’t need to know that. and even then, he was sure that they could see right through him. “what are you doing about these parts?” he asked, raising an eyebrow as he moved to stuff his hands into the pockets of the leather jacket he threw on whilst leaving his apartment this morning.”

jai’s day had left… quite a lot to be desired. he hadn’t gone to work with any of the training quidditch teams, instead deciding to stay at st. mungo’s and assist where help was needed, and it had been a hectic day. instead of apparating home, jai had decided that a walk would help settle the tension that had settled in his muscles, his shoulders tight and uncomfortable. 

it was a touch cold, so his hands were shoved into the pockets of the leather jacket he wore, and he rounded a corner, trying his best not to run into anyone walking along the sidewalk, but to no avail. he bumped into a passerby, and he stopped immediately, reaching out to catch them to make sure that they wouldn’t fall. “hell, i’m sorry,” he said, looking down and finding a familiar face in front of him. his worried expression shifted into that of a knowing smiling. “it’s you,” he added, his eyes dropping to look her over. “fancy seeing you here.” charming, as ever. ·

mary   was   a   creature   of   habit   ,      even   when   that   habit   was   trying   their   best   not   to   outwardly   have   one   .      they   always   walked   home   from   work   .      they   never   walked   the   same   route   twice   in   a   row   .   and   it   was   only   about   twenty   minutes   door   to   door   .      a   quick   jaunt   from   horizont   alley   to   the   leaky   cauldron   then   from   there   it   wasn’t   too   far   from   charing   cross   road   to   the   little   soho   flat   she   called   home   .      and   usually   she   had   her   head   on   a   swivel   for   every   step   of   that   walk   .   usually   .      but   today   had   been   a   long   day   ,      opening   through   till   just   before   the   happy   hour   rush   ,      and   maybe   mary   wasn’t   quite   as   present   as   she   usually   was   .      or   maybe   she   definitely   wasn’t   as   her   path   home   today   took   her   clean   into   another   person   .

“We don’t have to ‘traipse doon to London’ anymore, Mary,” James points out, donning their accent and failing at it horribly, though all that does is make him laugh seeing as he’s halfway through his second pint. “I mean … I never did anyway, but you don’t have to anymore.” He sighs, rests an elbow on the bar and his chin in his palm. “I already miss it. The real world is exactly as underwhelming as I knew it would be. I belong in that stinking big castle.”

sirius’  smile  does  pass   into  a  flinch  of  stiffness     at  the  weighted  silence  mary  gives  in  their  own  answer ,   but  as  is  often  the  case ,  the  small  glimmer  of  expression  passing  by  them  is  enough  to  fuel  him  on ,   unprompted .    “   why  yes .    why  wouldn’t  there  be ?   fantastic  place  to  go  for  the  hols ,    london . ”    he  starts  again .    “  so ,   i  imagine ,   the  crowd  of  kids  looking  to  hop  on  the  right  next  train  to  it .  ”
