Okay, to all the people blaming Amazon and TikTok, you are wildly missing the point or misdirecting blame.

TikTok is an app. It is not sentient. It is not doing this.

Amazon is also an app, and it is WHERE this is happening.

The problem is the people who are choosing to do this.

In order to “save money”— please read that as “steal”— they are buying a book fully intending to read and then return it so they get something without truly paying for it.

Nevermind, libraries let you borrow books for free, including ebooks.

Nevermind that writers can’t keep food on the table or a roof over their heads (so they can also keep writing, btw) if they aren’t getting paid.

No, no, what matters is YOU. You wanted it, felt entitled to it, made excuses to yourself and others to justify it, and then helped yourself to someone’s hardwork without intending to pay for it. AKA “theft.”

This isn’t some vigilante, anti-corporations BS. You don’t hurt corporations by doing this. You hurt authors. You hurt the author your stealing from. You hurt every author who gives up getting published because of this behavior. You hurt other authors who sees this happening, knowing you don’t give a rat’s ass about them only want to selfishly benefit from their labor. (Slavery is coming to mind, is it doing that for anyone else? Make someone else do all the work while you reap the benefits and do absolutely nothing to earn it?).

You hurt people. You hurt the people you are stealing from. You are choosing to do that.

Stop blaming TikTok and Amazon. It’s PEOPLE who are choosing to do this to other people.

Meanwhile, you could have gone to the library or used their electronic resources. Y’all are some fucked up, selfish assholes. Treat others how you’d want to be treated. If a toddler can understand kindness and caring, so the fuck can you.

CNN is the only “major” news network shown at dialysis, so I spend A LOT of time with it on in the background and I gotta ask, is CNN biased towards the left or the right? Because most (all?) of their hosts seem VERY left (Anderson Cooper, I’m looking at you) but they run NOTHING but pro-Trump, right wing commercials.

So, which side of the spectrum does their political allegiance lay? Or is the network some kind of mythical unicorn owned by a Republican that lets them be left wing hippies?

Apparently Terry Farrell is allergic to latex, which is not only why they redesigned the Trill makeup for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but also why Dax didn’t get to go on the undercover mission in “Apocalypse Rising” in spite of the fact that she would have been the most logical choice to go. Sam, I was reminded of your Bobby Flay diatribes today when I caught an episode of Beat Bobby Flay where he hit a camera operator with an eggplant he threw at the judges. I do not understand how, when he treats other people like this, he's still allowed - and celebrated - on the air.

He must be absolutely the most charismatic motherfucker in person.

I've read several accounts of him that say he's not a very good cook and I’m pretty sure I’ve read that he’s also shit at running a kitchen, but they also say he's a strong showman and he understands the entertainment world thoroughly. (Which sounds to me like "he's a white guy who can make small talk" but I’m a white guy who can’t make small talk, so it’s hard to throw stones there.)

My main diatribe is that on Iron Chef he always did "deconstructed" foods so that he wouldn't have to cook as much stuff, which isn't illegal but also really isn’t in the spirit of the game -- he’s always looking for an edge that will allow him to seem like the better chef while not actually being very good. I would respect the hustle, but most of the shows he does where his food is contrasted to someone else’s also involves a setup where he obviously has an upper hand in some way, which I don’t love. Usually TV chefs who produce or host a competitive cooking show don’t also participate, and it feels like a weird ethical violation to do both at once.

Relatedly, I love the idea of a Celebrity Chef Code of Ethics, can you imagine.

But to return to Chef Flay, as an example of his charisma, my parents KNOW he's an asshole and acknowledge it and still enjoy watching his cooking shows, even though none of them are especially educational -- or for my money very interesting. I don't find him appealing to watch, but clearly he has a specific appeal.

Did you all know that America’s Funniest Home Videos is still on the air? My parents also watch that, like some kind of weird curated Best Of YouTube Show. It’s the same kind of space, I think -- he has been made not only redundant but a bit antiquated-seeming by the last ten years of technological development, but he still holds a specific and comfortable place for some people, for whatever reason. Or perhaps he’s more like a Hallmark movie -- bland and safe, easy to have on in the background, easy to digest.

In any case, at least there’s a huge diversity of food television out there these days. Wee Sam growing up watching Good Eats as like, the one entertaining food show on television couldn’t have imagined the wealth of good food content that was coming. Amaury Guichon (the Chocolate Guy) does things with a cellphone camera that you couldn’t have done with a full Food Network budget and a film crew in 1995.

Fuck Bobby Flay. I’m convinced his show is rigged he wins WAY to many battles for the amount his food gets called out.

Iron Chef America was also pretty rigged: any time someone made anything too foreign, they’d lose.
