Lots of emotion and energy from his last song, kinda bummed I missed most of his set but kinda not bummed about the records I snagged.
I came in for a very soft number, which wasn’t all that great. What I heard wandering around sounded alright, though.
This set seemed to creep out of nowhere, as Jessica and her fellow guitarist turned tuning into a subtle introduction to whisper soft, ethereal folk.
Juvenile lyrics, no real substance. Kind of entertaining to watch.
Professional and goofy all at once.
Solid songwriting, if not exactly my cup of tea.
Interesting without an easy avenue for introduction. Bonus points for trippy visuals.
Incredible stage presence. Sounded much better than I’d heard on record, which I confirmed afterward.
Highlight of the day. Introspective and energizing.
Admittedly not that bummed they played their new album, because I was over watching Ought, but a full set of greatest hits would’ve been ideal.
Powerful and grungy. Perfect for early afternoon under the hot sun.
More downtempo than I would’ve thought. The rain that started pouring halfway through really added to the experience.
In 25 minutes Kurt Vile played all of three songs, but they were played with trusty imperfection and realism.
Jagged Guitars and tempo shifts made for a truly entertaining set, though for all the great songs they played there were as many that I wished they’d played.
While foregoing The New Pornographers to watch Shamir setup was the lowlight of the weekend, the live keyboards and drums were the glue that held everything together. Loss of points for disaffected onstage dancers. Why??
I’m pleasantly surprised with how popular these guys have become. Sam knows how to sing!
When it comes to reunion acts, it helps to know the source material. Lacking that, I was still impressed with musicianship that certainly hasn’t taken time off.
Unfortunately I missed “Marbles”, but I could tell by the time I got to the stage it’d been a great set.
Another early afternoon rock highlight. Incredible in every nuance of the performance.
Too boring to hold my attention, though I had a chuckle trying to figure out whether the band members were male or female.
As an introduction to The Julie Ruin, this was a great setting. Poppier than I’d expected.
Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, C+
It seemed like an energized and enjoyable rap show until they asked the crowd to chant “fuck police” for like the twelfth time after three songs.
Another introductory set, and one that left me wanting more. Best line: “On the way to the stage some guy asked me to take off my lipstick and I said, 'No'. I could’ve said 'no' to him forever.”
The perfect midday set that was nonstop hits, even the few I didn’t recognize.
The kind of light R&B that doesn’t seem appropriate for a festival, but can feel just right with live drums and a singer who’s having a blast. I can’t, however, agree that a tank top falls under the category of “dressing well”.
I cannot understand how so many people could just stand still during this set. I could not help but bob along to a perfect performance of dance music.
As far as I’m concerned, the true headliners of the festival. Unfuckwithable.
His medley of a performance was a little difficult to get into, even as I recognized songs off “Acid Rap”, but Chance gets major credit for not only starting EARLY but for a beautiful stage set up.
