Today, AT&T was recognized by FORTUNE magazine as the Most Admired Telecommunications Company in the world in 2015.
“Being recognized by FORTUNE as the number one telecom company is a testament to our 240,000 employees working hard every day to help customers mobilize their world with fast, highly secure connectivity to everything on the Internet – everywhere and on every device,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO.
Additionally, FORTUNE ranked AT&T #47 among all companies in all industries in its list of the Top 50 Most Admired companies in the world.
The History of the Telephone Presented by AT&T
We live in a connected world made possible by a rich history of innovation. This month, AT&T is proud to celebrate one of America’s great innovation milestones: the 100th Anniversary of the first transcontinental telephone call. It was a phone call that changed the world forever – connecting people thousands of miles apart, showcasing a promise of universal communication and spurring a century of innovation shaping the world we live in today.
The historical phone call took place on January 25, 1915 leading up to the opening of the Panama Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) and World’s Fair in San Francisco. The call was initiated by Alexander Graham Bell (in New York) and included Theodore Vail, the president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (now AT&T) in Jekyll Island, United States President Woodrow Wilson in the White House and Bell’s assistant Thomas Watson in San Francisco.
The call revolutionized communications for years to come. It marked the start of AT&T’s transcontinental telephone system, which at the time consisted of 130,000 telephone poles and 2,500 tons of copper wire stretching nearly 3,400 miles from New York to San Francisco. Today, AT&T provides service for nearly 119 million Americans.
Just as Alexander Graham Bell acknowledged on the historic call the “hard work, innovation and ingenuity” of those who made transcontinental communication possible, AT&T celebrates the spirit of innovation that continues to lead our company, our industry, and our country, forward.
AT&T is paving the way for the future of communications. The work done in the AT&T Foundry, at AT&T Labs, and the ideas submitted by our employees through our TIP Program continue to push the envelope of what’s possible.
The future of innovation also depends on our youth – and a workforce that is inspired and prepared to tackle the challenges of the 21st century global, knowledge-based economy. AT&T is committed to education and has committed to investing $350 million to education by 2017 – one of the largest-ever corporate contributions to education in American history.
We will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the first transcontinental call throughout 2015 by supporting San Francisco’s centennial anniversary of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE100). The AT&T Archives and History Center has loaned four ceremonial phones from the first call to the California Historical Society to commemorate the occasion. We are also pleased to contribute $50,000 to help launch and support the PPIE100 Passport to Success program, an educational initiative challenging students to advance their learning about the innovations of “Then, Now and Tomorrow.”
We have come a long way since the first transcontinental call 100 years ago. Just think how far we will go in the next century!

Five Important Tips for Parents of First-time Cell phone Users
Here we are in mid-January, a few weeks now removed from the holidays. The decorations have since been removed or packed away, and the kids have now started back to school. Many children excitedly found their first cell phone or tablet under the tree this year.
And while mom and dad may have greater peace of mind now that they can connect with their child virtually anywhere - there are also many things they should be aware of in order to ensure junior is using the device safely - and responsibly.
AT&T Tips for Parents of New Cell Phone Users
Set boundaries. Make sure your child understands how her device is and, more importantly, is NOT to be used. Are you okay with her using it for surfing the mobile Internet or for gaming, or is the device to be used for calling and texting only? Define how, when and where she is allowed to use her new cellphone. Make sure she understands you have the right to monitor her activity on the wireless device.
Discuss the dos and don’ts of texting. Since texting is the primary mode of communication for most young, wireless users, set rules for when she can do it. One option is to allow texting at specific times – no texting at school, no texting until homework is done, no texting after she’s in bed, and if she’s a teen, of course, no texting and driving.
Check privacy settings on social media. Make sure you set the privacy settings on whatever social media your child uses but emphasize that there is no privacy. The more private, the less likely inappropriate material will be received by your child, or sent to their circle of acquaintances. Make sure your child understands that everything sent over the Internet or a cellphone is public and can be shared with the entire world, so it is important that they use good judgment.
Take advantage of parental controls and location-based services. Ask your wireless provider about parental controls and location-based services available to you. For example, AT&T has Smart Limits which allows parents to block unwanted calls and texts from up to 30 numbers; set monthly limits on texts and mobile purchases; and restrict texting, data usage and outbound calling during specified times of the day. And with location-based services like FamilyMap, users can locate a family member’s cell phone on a map via Web browser on a PC or a mobile device. Such tools provide parents with peace of mind while away from their children.
Learn how to track your child’s wireless usage to control cost. All wireless providers offer ways for you to keep track of the number of minutes and amount of data used on a device. From an AT&T device, you can dial *MIN# to see how many minutes have been used or *DATA# to check on data usage.

Salute to Soldiers
Employees send 500 care packages to United States military personnel for the holidays.
A marine corporal was at a military base overseas, just days away from deployment. The weeks around the holidays are always the toughest time for guys to be out there. The ones with families miss them dearly, and the ones without are reminded often that they are without. When a box arrived from the States just before Thanksgiving, the corporal was surprised. He had never received anything from back home. When he saw that it was from complete strangers, he was touched.
“It meant a lot,” he said. “Although it may not seem like much, it means the world to us, especially those of us that do not have that strong supporting family back home.”
A group of more than 150 employees in AT&T’s “Partner Solutions” team took time out at a conference recently to put together more than 500 care packages for United States military personnel. They included some handwritten notes of thanks, and what they received back was heartwarming.
