"i know, dad. donât worry about it, thatâs in the past.â she reassured, squeezing richâs hand softly. at the mention of the wedding, she smiled and looked down. "well â i donât know if we are anymore. we were full on wedding planning, we even had an engagement party and an announcement the newspaper, but i guess i was scared to be all alone and making such a big commitment, so i left. but, he showed up here in valdez the other day and weâve sort of reconnected â i still love him very, very much, and i know he has feelings for me too, so maybe we might pick up where we left off.â she said, smiling at her dad. âwell, his name is ronan broder, heâs twenty five, and heâs from new york. i think that you would really like him. heâs really smart and very humble, and the kind of guy who just loves unconditionally.â rosie gushed. the blonde reached for something in the white hospital nightstand and handed her dad one of the rings she was wearing when the bomb went off. âand look â this is my engagement ring, itâs an heirloom. when i tried to give it back he told me that it was mine and that i should keep it, so i did. i know itâs cheesy and all, but i think that it kept us connected.â she said, with the look a person in love has when talking about their partner. âoh, and if we do get married, youâre gonna be a grandpa soon, because weâre gonna have four kids â well, maybe three. and y'know, we were planning to have them young so we can have the energy for four."Â
over the years, richard had perfected the art of patience, of listening and of understanding. all he does at first is listen to his daughterâs words, the excitement that filled her, left the older man beaming back at her. delight was apparent, even if he felt guilt trickle in at the thought of missing any milestones in her life. heâd captured every single one heâd been a part of before, now -- now heâd missed some of the biggest and most life changing. he doesnât get caught up in his thoughts, doesnât let that occur. instead he focuses on her, focuses on her delight and does his best to share in it with her, despite his shame. âfour grandkids, huh?â eyes widen. she was still young, but he suspected sheâd lived more of a life now than her older siblings had. clearing his throat, he works out what to say in response, sweaty hands now rubbing across his suit pants, trying his best not to appear -- alarmed by it all. that might have been the wrong word. âitâs a beautiful ring. am i going to get to meet this man, since heâs going to be my son-in-law, possibly...probably.â he chuckles, the ring now the sole focus in the palm of his hand as he takes it in, happy that sheâd found people that made her so very happy. âi guess if iâm a grandad younger, iâll have more energy to babysit right?â heâll murmur, beaming up at her as he takes her hand again, presses a kiss to the back of it. ââm so proud of you...damn, look at you -- making a whole life for yourself. sâall i ever wanted for you, you know..âÂ
