Melville
Melville goes up to the counter and orders a trenta white chocolate mocha. Instead of waiting at the counter, he sits down at a table. The barista brings it over. “Don’t you want to drink this, sir?” she asks. “I would prefer not to,” says Melville, and leaves.

Happy birthday, Herman Melville (b. 1 August 1819)!
Multi-award winning choreographer James Wilton re-imagines Herman Melville’s seminal novel, Moby Dick.
Featuring a cast of 7, Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, #capoeira and partner-work, LEVIATHAN will have you on the edge of your seat. It will leave you gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement, all accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul.

Last year, MobyLives wrote about the theatre company planning a staged version of Moby-Dick on a ship, remarkably the first naval adaptation of Melville’s classic novel. Nothing seemed more fitting. Visual artist Lawrence LaBianca seems to have been thinking along…
An artist tethered a copy of Moby-Dick to the bottom of the ocean to create a site-specific sculpture entitled “What Lies Beneath”
Why did the old Persians hold the sea holy? Why did the Greeks give it a separate deity, and own brother Jove? Surely all this is not without meaning. And still deeper the meaning of that story of Narcissus, who because he could not grasp the tormenting mild image he saw in the fountain, plunged into it and was drowned. But that same image, we ourselves see in all rivers and oceans. It is the image of the ungraspable phantom of life; and this is the key to it all.
