01. gently brushing the other's hair out of their face to tuck behind their ear. 02. wrapping a blanket around their shoulders from behind. 03. brushing tears off of their cheeks. 04. reaching out hesitantly before resting a hand on their back. 05. placing a cup of tea or coffee in front of them. 06. sitting beside them while they are asleep to watch over them. 07. sharing silence with them. 08. pulling them into a tight hug. 09. writing something quietly and passing them the note. 10. fixing a piece of their clothing carefully.

01. staring at them in silence for a long moment before walking away. 02. slamming a door shut without explanation. 03. packing their things up, slowly and deliberately. 04. breathing sharply through their nose and refusing to meet their eyes. 05. cleaning something obsessively in silence.

01. running their thumb over the others bottom lip slowly. 02. standing just a little too close, enough to feel each others breath. 03. grazing their knuckles along the other's hip or thigh in passing. 04. undoing the top button of their shirt while holding eye contact. 05. leaning in like they're going to kiss and then pausing shyly. 06. sliding a hand under their chin to tilt their head up.
the building is half-dark, humming with broken christmas lights and the echo of boots in stairwells, and bobbi finds him leaning against a shattered window like he owns the skyline. she exhales a laugh she shouldn’t have (low, warm, too relieved) and lets her shoulder brush his as she steps beside him. ❝ you know, ❞ she murmurs, eyes catching the distant glow of holiday lights below them, ❝ most people spend christmas eve drinking cocoa, not crawling through ventilation shafts with their ex-husband. ❞ her smirk softens into something almost tender. ❝ but then again… most people aren’t you, clint. ❞ her hand hovers near his, close enough to feel the heat of his pulse. ❝ try not to get shot again, okay? i’m running out of excuses for why i keep coming back for you. ❞ @markmans
Marvel Graphic Novel: Emperor Doom (1987)
bobbi notices the man behind them before she notices the quiet between her and clint. she always does, threats register faster than feelings, and it’s easier that way. the street is busy enough to hide intent, but not busy enough to forgive it. someone is watching. someone is waiting. she doesn’t slow down. slowing down would mean thinking. instead, she reaches out and links her arm through clint’s. it’s instinctive. careless. irritating in how right it feels. her body remembers the shape of him long before her mind can argue otherwise, elbow settling in, stride syncing without effort. there was a time when this had been their default, movement as partnership, proximity as safety. she tells herself that memory doesn’t get to mean anything now.
❝ temporary, ❞ she says, because if she doesn’t say it first, he will. they keep walking. that’s the point. walking keeps the world normal, keeps the lie intact. she feels him adjust their pace without being told, feels the shift ripple through them like muscle memory waking up. she hates how easy it is. hates how much harder it would be with anyone else. she tilts her head just enough to catch their reflection in a shop window, still there, still interested. ❝ don’t look, ❞ she murmurs lightly, like she’s commenting on the weather. ❝ but we’ve got company. ❞
she tightens her arm a fraction, not for show, not really, and guides them toward a narrower street, one with warmer lights and less space to linger. it’s subtle, the way she leans in, shoulder brushing his, the way she lets the moment read as familiarity instead of surveillance. anyone watching would see a couple comfortable enough not to perform. that’s always been the danger of them. they don’t have to fake it. they stop at a gelato stand, bright and ridiculous against the night. bobbi keeps her arm linked as she turns them both, angling their bodies just right so the watcher has to choose between waiting or losing interest. ❝ two cones, ❞ she tells the vendor easily. ❝ surprise him. ❞ she feels clint glance at her but doesn’t look back. she doesn’t need to. she already knows the expression, that half-amused, half-something-else look that used to undo her on worse days. the man across the street hesitates. then moves on. threat neutralized.
bobbi pays, takes her cone, and only then does she let go. the absence is immediate. loud. she pretends not to notice. they start walking again, slower now, the urgency gone but the closeness still echoing between them. she focuses on the cold sweetness of the gelato, on the sound of their footsteps, on anything but the fact that for a few minutes there, things had felt uncomplicated. ❝ don’t get ideas, ❞ she says, because silence would let the feeling settle. ❝ i’d do that with anyone if it got the job done. ❞ she bumps her shoulder into his, just enough to keep it light, just enough to keep control of the moment. ❝ besides, ❞ she adds, eyes forward, voice steady, ❝ it worked. ❞ @markmans
