Modern Inheritance is my ongoing AU of Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle. Many of lore posts explain how MIC is different from IC, but please note that MIC deals frequently with PTSD and also significantly changes the characterization of many of the mains, so it is not something that everyone would likely enjoy. I do my best to put warnings on any posts and stories that might be triggering, so please be aware of those. Also, please note that I write these stories for fun, not to cause problems in the fandom or argue about characters and characterizations. :) Please feel free to ask me questions or suggest prompts if you have a problem or question about things in MIC, as I’m always looking for things to distract me from my actual studies.

Just some more Le’sohek te Tamtey Kataru’ite pics from my current Frontiers of Pandora playthrough. Still on the upper plains, going slow and trying to figure out the sequence for the physical songcord I’m making for her.

I’d like to write stories with Le’sohek. She’s the first original character of such a different species for me. There’s a lot of lore and story and side bits and shorts already in my head and bashed out as silly dialogue on my MIC server. She feels both similar to but very different from MIC!Arya, and I’d love to share this new journey of mine learning a completely new character.

I just…am still having a lot of trouble sitting down and writing. Na’vi are, again, so very different from what I’m used to, with so many different sensory, behavioral, and physical descriptions and movements and the like. Tails!! They have tails! And such expressive ears! They think differently than us and move differently. I’m trying to learn.

At the same time, whenever I write anything these days, it doesn’t feel or look or sound right to me. It doesn’t sound like me, at least I think it doesn’t. It doesn’t flow, and feels like I’m trying to tell, not show. But I can’t put a finger on what is causing it or what in the prose is going wrong and so I just….don’t. I know the solution would be to just write more and practice and smooth things out and shake off the rust. But I just…iunno, I want to! But my executive function hits me with the NO frying pan whenever I get time. It even hits me with it for playing the game.

Anyway. Know I’ve been quiet here. I live on Discord now. Figured I’d use this as a lil update. Cheers mates, and hope everything is going well!

Ket update with some ramble

As a side note, anyone interesting in hearing about Le'sohek? Discord server members do not count in answering this, y'all hear about her daily.

Le’sohek te Tamtey Kataru’ite (far right) gives her thoughts on an ikran infiltration plan at a family meeting.

Le'sohek is the new member of the Brain Crew. And yes, she and Arya have met in my head. Arya's in awe of the height. Le'sohek thinks Arya's braid is a kuru and thus elves must have kuru, which makes sense to her with the mental communication and Firnen and riding him. Sìlron, Le'sohek's bonded ikran, is very confused as to why Firnen will not make tsaheylu with him to properly meet. Firnen is absolutely chuffed to have another flying partner even if this one looks very strange, and is even MORE chuffed when he realizes he can read Le'sohek's face and tail like he does a dragon or werecat.

When he excitedly informs Arya of this, Arya is more losing it over "WAIT YOU HAVE A TAIL?!" and Le'sohek spends the next 30 seconds guarding her tail by spinning around in a circle keeping Arya in sight before Arya uses her actual speed and boops the floof on the end of the Na'vi's tail and gets promptly hissed at.

Arya hisses back.

Both are pleased with the ferocity of their new friend.

What is MIC!SwapAU?

This assumes you know what MIC is. And even if you don't, just know it's Inheritance Cycle with an extended timeline, a few people being not dead (including Brom), and some very very cherrypicked and well blended in modernized elements like the occasional gun and a bit more military structure and there's added worldbuilding.

SwapAU is a sorta personal project that I’ve been tinkering with for a year or so. It isn’t cohesive really, major plot points/events are not explained and I am purposefully ignoring things like the wider plot of the Inheritance Cycle/MICanon and things happening outside the events I am making.

SwapAU is my imagining of what would happen if MIC!Arya had 2-3 months at Gil’ead before being taken to Urubaen, where she had a month of TLC from Durza there under Galbatorix’s eye. Galbatorix doesn’t have the Name tablet in this one, so is more focused on his research. Firnen hatches for Arya, and Galbatorix forgoes extracting true names immediately due to the Yawë tattoo in this AU-AU being akin to an oath to never (intentionally) betray the elves, as well as the varden and free peoples due to Arya’s personal beliefs. Instead Galbatorix and Durza use a form of conditioning to turn Arya's already very deeply running protective instincts and dedication to the Varden/Elves/Riders and the dragons and attempt to have her and Firnen react aggressively and violently to any sign of threat, no matter how small. Their hope is at one point to allow them to escape and go to the Varden or the elves, where the expected response would be to ensure they are not a threat (by of course having them under guard and approached quickly) triggering the conditioning and leading to both a bloodbath and feedback loop of them feeling in danger and threatened, massacring whoever they go to for help, and then being labeled as traitors and attacked on sight, leading to more carnage.

Except, whoopsie! Arya is wildly adept at shielding portions of her mind while sharing others due to her 100 years of training and discipline. She is rabidly protective of Firnen, yes, but she shields his mind from any of her pain and even any negative emotions, and this prevents the conditioning from taking hold fully. Eventually, something undefined and fuckywucky happens with the VoS eldunari and Arya's use of wordless magic and the two do escape, but instead of going straight to the elves or the Varden Arya hides with Firnen along the edge of Du Weldenvarden.

A vast majority of SwapAU is just bulletpoints of how the story goes. It is also focusing on the long, long physical, mental and emotional recovery. I use this AU of MIC to explore these deeper and at times darker themes and consequences of captivity, malnutrition, physical recovery, and the limitations of magic with healing and the body/mind connection.

It is also where I get to explore how things could have gone had not everyone been quite as 'okay' as they are in MIC, but in different levels and expressions. Glen does not handle as well, and becomes far more angry at the world, though at one, definitely not mentioned directly after this, woman in particular. Islanzadi is looped in on Arya and Firnen's existence early on and actually does motherly things and is hit hard with her mistakes and immediately begins trying to focus on the now and do what she can while acknowledging how fucked up she was towards Arya both before and after the ambush. Firnen is young, has silted speech for much of his time before Du Weldenvarden, is shy but curious and definitely struggling with how much Arya hid from him and even lied about, knowing the entire time that it was her trying to protect him from quite literally everything he was exposed to. Arya has severe damage to her lungs and to her vocal cords due to using symptom management microdoses of Tunivors for 2+ months leading to buildup and toxicity, and has to use Rider's Sign and body language to communicate until her body has enough nutrients and recovered enough strength after the other physical damage has been healed to even begin to rebuild her stamina, find her voice, and overcome the mental block of talking being the number one thing to never ever do because it means revealing information.

Eragon, Saphira and Brom do eventually make appearances, but it is not something I focus on much (yet, anyway). And I don't really care much for Murtagh's role in this. I have in my head that he stays with Nasuada as a personal guard and becomes a strategist, learning from Jormundr and other military men while bringing in a viewpoint they've not had very often as a former noble in Galbatorix's courts. But I really just don't mind him much here. This AU of the AU is even more about the recovery, about someone who has everything stripped away while also being torn up inside by her urge to protect everyone at the cost of herself conflicting with now being one part of a pair and is now the exact thing she was so dedicated to protecting, and having to relearn and regroup from zero after spending her life being the one everyone and anyone could turn to as the one who would stand strong. Arya's got so many issues around Firnen and protecting him that it is to the level that her–

Well, a majority of votes came from the Discord 😅 who already get the content as I make it.

I’ve calmed down a bit both on beating myself up about interaction/lack thereof, but with that calm down I also lost a lot of writing mojo. Again.

I’ve had a hard time coming up with stuff for ‘canon’ MIC without going back to the books (I’d have to audiobook and Ngl I can’t take it seriously with the dragon voices) or getting new IC content. So SwapAU was my main side project.

Trouble is that it is very confusing, especially for anyone new to MIC, to have both side by side. Not to mention just in general, as it’s even more fragmented and chopped up and non-typical-story-prose-written, barely even moments of moments, than regular MIC is with its lack of single, multi chapter story layout.

I don’t think I’ll post anything of it here for a bit, or at all. If I write something I like I’ll probably drop it as a screenshot with a mention of it being SwapAU rather than MICanon. Otherwise if you want that stuff then join the Discord (no, my server does not require ID or scan verification, just a bot check message from me after you join).
