One must imagine Sisyphus happy
Putting the term "Catholic guilt" on a high shelf where fandom can't reach it until everyone learns how to identify characters who are very very clearly coded as Protestant.
"Absolutely no one comes to save us but us."
Ismatu Gwendolyn, "you've been traumatized into hating reading (and it makes you easier to oppress)", from Threadings, on Substack [ID'd]
HEY wanna read but annoyed on where to find copies of books?
Here's an archive with millions of PDFs of books and papers and magazines and essays and stuff.
First time seeing Gwendolyn referenced outside of tiktok, fantastic that she’s getting more reach.
Be really careful about excluding other forms of consuming media as somehow "not enough" compared to reading, because that's an ableist narrative.
Other totally valid ways to consume books:
being read to
audiobooks (as above but someone's paid to do it)
the movie version (may differ, but stories are allowed to be enjoyed in different ways)
braille
modern translations
other language translations
digitally (lots of people can't hold up the weight of a book!)
summary/edited/shorter versions for people with mental health issues and/or cognitive impairments
Because yes, the ruling class benefits from illiteracy, but it also really benefits from abled, health-privileged, and classist people from looking down their noses at people who have different needs and preferences.
If you think reading text is the only legitimate (or even the always-preferred) way to participate in stories, block me now. And I say this as a writer of books.
on one hand i feel strongly that we need to steal shakespeare back from posh people who have ruined it with their received pronunciation abominations, on the other hand they have ruined it so utterly that i don't want to.
Americans 👏 should 👏 perform 👏 Shakespeare 👏 in 👏 American 👏 accents 👏
8. Conclusion: Analyzing "Slime Tutorials"
In the Internet Age, digital fandom is the main way that fans connect with one another, interact with art and theories, and spread the word about their favourite media. Tumblr has curated a niche of digital fandom which attracts multimedia creators, as well as fans who are drawn to multimedia fandom. It is no surprise, therefore, that fans of the "Slime Tutorial" gather on Tumblr to share their appreciation for musical theatre.
Bootleg recordings are the backbone of digital theatre fan communities, as they allow for fans (new and old!) to view a show without the cost or travel time. Despite the concerns of theatre stars, they are also proven not to detract from ticket sales, as almost all fans would buy a ticket if it were feasible. The illegality of bootlegs rests purely in the murky waters of copyright infringement, especially enforced by video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, hence the code-name "Slime Tutorial." While theatre creators' disdain combines with the social belittling of musical theatre fans to form a harsh stigma that they are "entitled" or "don't respect" etiquette, these claims are rooted largely in classism and ageism, as while most musical fans are young (and therefore less likely to be wealthy), they are systemically barred from live performances due to skyrocketing ticket prices and social disapproval. Bootlegs serve as a budget-friendly alternative as well as a safe space for other fans in a similar position.
Furthermore, bootleg recordings serve the valuable purpose of archiving the limited experience of a particular show with a particular cast, sometimes even catching unique moments not seen in the official script or score. These recordings in turn encourage fans to create their own media, be it art, GIFs, or edits, which interacts with shows in a way which wouldn't be possible if the experience were kept behind lock and key.
While some productions are beginning to tap into the marketing potential of fan interaction, especially since fandom on social media has been a driving force behind word-of-mouth notoriety, digital fandom remains a largely untapped resource, likely due to the stigma. The future may be uncertain, but musical theatre has a very clear opportunity to propel themselves into the twenty-first century, if only they were to fully embrace their young, digitally-minded fanbase.

People be like, “but if you watch a bootleg/recording you’re not gonna want to see it live!” But dude I just watched Hamilton with a camera so close I could see the sweat dripping down their face and guess what. I still wanna see it live. So yeah, how about we have more paid for recordings for the folks who can’t afford theatre tickets/don’t live near theatres?
me, banging pots and pans together: make! theatre! more! accessible!
I’m so sick of uni societies that are an incestuous nest of vipers monopolised by a few white private school kids who’s parents paid for them to go to RADA part time
Eat the rich
there are 80000 bootlegs of popular shows like Wicked, DEH, Hamilton, Phantom of the Opera, etc., and certain broadway actors think that bootlegs existing are going to run Broadway out of business?
like. nah. there are plenty of reasons to be anti-bootleg but this reason is absolutely ridiculous. the general public is who buys most theatre tickets and i doubt many of them know how to find bootlegs.
forgot i tweeted this a while back lol, anyway make broadway accessible now
[ID: screenshot of a tweet by @/somthinprobably which reads
“media that’s often about the impoverish and disabled yet remains inaccessible to them essentially exploits their struggles for entertainment purposes and more often than not risk misinforming and misrepresenting. charm is a week excuse for classism”
End ID]
What is one topic you could rant about for fifteen minutes straight?
classism, feminism, theatre history, german history. Many things probably hahaha
What’s your theatre hot takes
These may not be the hottest takes but I shall still share!!
1 ~ way to many roles are now only casted based on the attractiveness of the actor rather then talent and whats true to the character and its ruining a lot of these shows in the process (big example being Seymour in little shop)
2 ~ stunt casting ruins almost any show its done in
3 ~ there should be more pro-shots and slime tutorials- not having them deprives so many people of the joys of theatre. Being able to watch a show live, especially a big production such as a Broadway production, is a privilege and I think not supporting them is a form of classism
4 ~ there isn't enough diversity in theatre
5 ~ plays are SO underrated and under hyped in the theater world and should get more attention
6 ~ there are a lot of popular male actors just arent good and people NEED to stop casting them to give actually good actors a chance
7 ~ if I had to choose Id always choose acting over singing
8 ~ movie musicals aren't bad, sometimes even better then the stage shows, it all depends on how its done
I didn't know people were so divided over Eddie Redmayne as Emcee in Cabaret?
GEE, I SURE WISH THERE WAS A WAY FOR THOSE OF US WHO CAN'T BUY BROADWAY TICKETS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CONVO
started reading othello in ap lit
we are all assigned characters to read their part and then do like a little graphic organizer thingy on the character
i got michael cassio
dont know much abt him yet but the first thing i thought when i read abt him was "who is this twink and why is he lowkey me"
anyways looking forward to the absolute insanity its going to be with a 12 grade ap lit class reading out othello in class (in 10th grade julius ceasar was horrid)
can we talk about othello from cassio's pov
how everything is normal and he's doing his job. and losing his job (for reasonable reasons, to be fair), and trying to get his job back
and then some guy attacks him, but he's a soldier and he holds his own pretty well. He gets injured but it's fine, it's not fatal.
and then he finds out that the whole thing was a deliberate plot to kill him, arranged by his two close friends
one of which he was hanging out with very frequently and just had a whole conversation with about his personal love life a few hours ago
when i can't explain that the funniest thing i've seen today is cassio saying "this is my right hand, this is my left" whilst drunk so instead i scream into the void
