As marketers, we are aware that getting engagement on social media is the first step towards positive ROI and brand loyalty. Ā But how do we encourage that engagement?
Provide collective benefits (larger discounts as more people share social deals)
Grant them access to exclusive content (who doesnāt love something they canāt get anywhere else)
Provide an altruistic incentive to share (send a small donation for social shares)
Ask your fans what offers/incentives/content they want to receive (people love to influence others)
Reward your most active fans (by nature, we are competitive and want to receive the perks that other users are receiving, and this will prompt more engagement)

Personally, I have noticed a significant increase in the CPC for Facebook Ads. Ā Iām not surprised to hear that this is a widespread trend, as I anticipated that more and more brands would jump into Display on Facebook.
Increased presence from advertisers pushed upĀ Facebookās cost-per-click by 22% in the second quarter, following aĀ 40% jumpĀ in the first quarter, per a new report.
While this statistic is based on a subset of clients for Efficient Frontier, an advertising agency, combined with my experiences, Iām inclined to believe that this is the case.
What is interesting in this trend is that historically, Facebook display ads under-perform compared to banner ads. Ā While the costs remain lower than traditional display/banner advertising, I will continue to view Facebook ads as a valuable portion of the marketing mix; however, once this value proposition is gone, these ads will lose their value. Ā
Since analysts are indicating that Facebook will take the top spot for display advertising for 2011, I wonder when we will see the price disparity even out?
One additional highlight I would like to share, for all my fellow search marketers, is that Facebook ad spend is not currently cannibilising search, although I would keep an eye on where spends are coming from.
Facebook spend currently is mostly incremental and not cannibalising search. Budget for Facebook is mostly coming from offline media such as TV and print. Efficient Frontier believes that Facebook will show the strongest growth in the months ahead.
Takeaway: Ā I believe that Facebook ads will continue to be a good investment as long as they are tied to strategic business objectives and carefully planned and monitored for success.Ā This highlights the importance of carefully designed and targeted ads; as well as ensuring that you are testing and measuring for efficiency in driving conversions. Facebook ads can still be a fantastic investment, the crucial strategy will continue to be that you must always be testing and optimizing your ads to ensure the best performance you can.
