I can’t begin to explain how important this season is. Isak dealt with internalised homophobia; Martino is likely going to deal with both that and the rampant homophobia of Italian society. The opening voicemails broke my heart because I’ve heard stories exactly like those.

I don’t think most people realise just how deeply rooted and just socially acceptable homophobia is. In other countries, there would be public outcry and outrage, were a politician to say something transphobic or homophobic. In italy, while there is usually backlash from the LGBT community and its allies, those politicians don’t face consequences. And that’s because most people agree with them. The first time we were abroad and my brother saw two men holding hands, he literally stopped on his track and stared at them, mouth agape. Not even in disgust: he just couldn’t believe that two men could do that in public.

I personally can’t wait to see Italian Eskild’s development. I can’t begin to imagine what’s life like, in Italy, for a flamboyant gay man—it takes bravery not to adhere to the common standards of masculinity. I’m glad that they picked an actor who is LGBT himself and that is a member of a gay rights association.

The hug between Gio and Martino was, perhaps, the most meaningful moment of the clip. You can see all the thoughts swirling in Martino’s head: his mother, his feelings for Giovanni, the loneliness of his closet. You can almost feel what he feels. See what he thinks. Shame? For his mum and her mental health? Shame for his feelings—because he knows he’s gay? Does he feel like a liar for hiding all that from Giovanni? Does he feel guilty because he’s got feelings for him? I feel like he’s thinking, would he shy away from me if he knew that I’m gay? That I have a crush on him?

I wish SkamIt could be on tv, but that’s very unlikely to happen in Italy. It’s too bold and in-your-face for a public that can’t stand a kiss between two men on screen without shouting: “THINK ABOUT THE KIDS!”

Good work. And I loved that they made Eskild Eleonora’s brother, since he and Ele couldn’t be roommates.
