MYTHOLOGY MEME [3/∞]: Omphale, legendary queen of Lydia
Omphale was the queen of the kingdom of Lydia, which was located in present-day western Turkey. As a punishment for murdering his friend, Iphitos, in a fit of madness, Heracles became a slave to the queen for one year. Omphale subjected Heracles to “humiliating” work, forcing him to wear women’s clothing and spin wool while she wore his Nemean Lion pelt and wielded his club. Omphale eventually freed Heracles and took him as her husband. Their descendants founded the semi-legendary Heraclid dynasty of Lydia. The story of Omphale and Heracles later became an artistic subject to explore gender roles and sexuality.
