“The university is a critical institution or it is nothing.” Stuart Hall (1932 - 2014) is best know as a cultural theorist and one of the founding figures of the rising school of thought often referred to as British Cultural Studies. Hall’s work covers a broad range of issues, but he’s been most consistent in articulating the way power works through cultural processes. For instance, in one of his co-authored books, Policing the Crises, Hall works from a cultural perspective to examine the racial dimensions underlying a mugging panic in Britain. As the authors of the book note, they sought to “examine why and how the themes of race, crime and youth – condensed into the image of ‘mugging’ – come to serve as the articulator of the [mugging] crisis, as its ideological conductor.”
