Stranger Things Finale - my predictions
I still strongly believe that Byler will happen, that Eleven will not die, and that Volume 2 actually set the table extremely well for the final season. The groundwork is there. Almost all character arcs are already resolved, except for the emotional and thematic cores of the story: Eleven, Will, Mike, Hopper, and Joyce-Jonathan. The success of the finale, in my opinion, will largely depend on what the show ultimately chooses to do with Mike Wheeler.
Right now, I’m afraid that Mike risks remaining a self-insert for the Duffer brothers rather than becoming a fully realized character with his own POV. But the show has quietly been setting up something much bigger for him, what I’d call his A Wrinkle in Time arc.
Mike, Love as the Weapon, and the Puzzle Pieces
There is a crucial scene in Volume 2 where Mike sees A Wrinkle in Time in the hospital. That moment isn’t random. It’s a realization scene. In that book, love is the ultimate weapon against darkness—and Mike has always been framed as the Heart of the Party.
What makes this moment even more important is that, in the same space, we see rainbow puzzle pieces. This matters. Love is the weapon, but it is rainbow love. Mike already has almost all the pieces; he just hasn’t fully put them together yet. By the end of Volume 2, I believe he finally does.
A critical note: Will’s coming-out scene should have happened in a smaller, more intimate group, not publicly or performatively. Will’s truth is deeply tied to Mike’s emotional awakening, not to spectacle.
Star Wars Parallels and the Endor Battle
Stranger Things has always borrowed heavily from Star Wars, and I think Season 5 will fully embrace that.
At the end of Volume 2, Dustin and Steve have been dressed in a way that evokes Ewoks, the cute creatures which first referenced at the end of Season 3 (in the video store scene), and again in Volume 2. I think this is deliberate. I expect an Endor-style ground battle, chaotic, clever, and emotional rather than purely heroic.
Lucas and Mike resemble Leia in her military role.
Eleven aligns with Luke, the Jedi with super powers.
Will maps surprisingly well onto Han Solo, sassy, emotionally guarded, deeply loyal.
There’s an especially interesting emotional inversion here. In Return of the Jedi, Leia (Mike) realizes Luke (Eleven) is her (twin) brother .
In Stranger Things, Mike (Leia) has to fully understand Eleven (Luke) not as his romantic destiny, but as family (circle back to season 1). Meanwhile, Han Solo, who is literally frozen and taken at the end of Episode V (the prison intended for Luke), parallels Will.
Han’s imprisonment leads to Leia’s emotional clarity. I wonder if something similar will happen here: Will’s capture or imprisonment (after Eleven/Luke is tricked) could finally force Mike to name and understand his love.
In an interview, Gaten might have spoiled that Will gets captured again. And what I also like is that Han Solo was not sure about Leia, even after the 'I know' scene, and said at some point in Episode VI he will not deny Leia's happiness if she wants something with Luke (Eleven) (which I can also see Will doing), but then Leia confirms that Luke is her brother, leading to this funny Han Solo reaction by the way.
Pairings and the Ground Battle
I imagine the final battle splitting characters:
Jonathan, Mike, Will, and Robin together on the ground, emotion, strategy, truth. Jonathan, especially, plays a key role in ensuring Will’s happy ending.
Steve, Nancy, Dustin and Lucas more in the background, still important, but not the emotional core in the finale as their arcs are kind of ended in Volume 2 .
Eleven, Kali and Hopper (see later).

JOYCE'S ARC: An Emotional Byers Family Reckoning
One emotional arc that still feels unresolved is Joyce’s relationship with Jonathan. Joyce has spent the entire series fighting to save Will, and understandably so, but in doing that, Jonathan has been consistently neglected. He became the quiet parent, the one who sacrificed without ever being asked, the one who was expected to understand. Jonathan wears a The Fall T-shirt. If there is one death in the final season, I think it may be Jonathan’s. I think there might be a bittersweet scene between Jonathan and Joyce, or a big mourning scene for Joyce. But I am not sure. It might also be beautiful that Jonathan almost died, and that Joyce realizes something about her relationship with Jonathan.
The avalanche: I love you - I know.
The first half of the finale carefully builds Mike/Leia’s arc while setting up Will as Han Solo (and I hope, as Will is now confident and not afraid anymore, that we will see some good Will sassiness, please).
As the battle begins, the group splits, and Mike immediately assumes leadership of his smaller group. Beneath his calm, Mike carries exhaustion, guilt, and repressed feelings toward Will. There will be some emotional beats, with Robin and Jonathan there. Jonathan might see himself as the buffer between Will and Mike, very well aware that Mike is the crush in Will's monologue... but something goes wrong... and... the avalanche gets triggered...
... there is a crucial confrontation about the painting lie: Mike and Will speak honestly about the painting lie. The tension is sharp, charged, and intimate, much like Leia’s first confrontation with Han in the beginning of Episode V. This might be the big monologue delivered by Mike...
... but -I also hope- a sharp reply by Will about the way Mike treated El and Will in season 3 and season 4, all the lies he told. Perhaps Will might call him back the pattern of omissions that have shaped their relationship—everything from Mike never having told that he almost jumped off the cliff, which Dustin had revealed, to all the small protective lies that left Will feeling unseen. The avalanche of truths crashes in, forcing Mike to confront the weight of years of fear, overprotection, and repressed emotions. For the first time in a long time, Mike opens up fully, acknowledging how terrified he has been of losing Will, how much he has held back, and how his attempts to lead and protect have often masked his vulnerability. In this moment, the layers of guilt, love, and longing spill over, reshaping the emotional dynamic between them and setting the stage for Will’s eventual understanding of Mike’s care, even as the chaos of the battle begins to erupt around them.
And this gets clocked by Chewbacca, I mean Robin and Jonathan.
And then a reference to another 1980s movie with an interesting message about friends turning into lovers. WHEN HARRY MET SALLY. I want this weird awkward dynamic scene where Marie and Jess (Robin and Jonathan) serve as a sounding board for Harry and Sally (Mike and Will).
When Vecna strikes and Will is captured, chaos erupts, but Mike maintains composure. In fleeting glances and quiet gestures, Will finally understands the truth of Mike’s feelings. He doesn’t need her to say it; he simply knows.
That recognition carries Will through his imprisonment (maybe helps him to free himself...) and sets the emotional foundation for the epilogue, where Byler happiness is realized in the arcade and basement, spaces reclaimed for play, connection, and soft, earned joy, without the need for a climactic kiss during the heat of battle.
There would be no kiss during the battle, as there needs to be some Mileven closure, and a super emotional goodbye scene between Mike and Eleven. I am assuming that there was a breakup before season 5 started, so the goodbye scene is more a goodbye between soul twins, destined to meet each other and influence and help each other, but not to end together (like Jancy), and where the childish crush changed into a mature friendship (the signs in season 5 seems to hint that this happened).
Eleven’s Ending: Escape, Not Death
Eleven’s arc is the hardest to resolve, and the show knows it. She’s trapped in a vicious cycle: as long as she lives, the military will hunt her. It is an interesting writers' choice to have Kali function as the messenger, reminding ourselves about this 'immense knot'. (I think Kali is more than the bad messenger).
As Max pointed out in Volume 1, there are three apparent outcomes:
Accept fate and remain imprisoned.
Die (Volume 2 heavily pushes this as a false solution).
We do not want 1 or 2. The only viable answer is escape, but under the disguise of death (as if Eleven indeed selected 2).
This is where The Shawshank Redemption, Wicked, E.T., and The Dark Knight Rises all converge.
Shawshank Redemption is everywhere in Stranger Things, even down to the director being called back from retirement.
Andy escapes through tunnels.
Will, who once built tunnels framed as a threat in Season 2, may now be reframed as having unknowingly built the means of escape.
Andy can only escape because he told Red ahead of time.
I think there’s a reason Mike and Eleven talk about the three waterfalls.
It will happen, but not with Mike physically present.
Like The Dark Knight Rises, the escape requires absence and faith.
In the epilogue, years later, Mike receives a postcard of three waterfalls. No explanation. Just proof of life. He knows Eleven survived.
Kali, Illusions, and the Elphaba Trick
Kali’s name (the goddess of death and rebirth) is not a coincidence. I believe the final battle will stage what looks like the ultimate sacrifice by Eleven and Kali together. A bit like in the Dark Knight Rises. Kali has some Catwoman movements (but I am not shipping them).
If there is a superhero whose arc is close to Eleven (but for some reason never mentioned) it is Batman, especially the Nolan's version. He is often portrayed by the government/media as the villain (responsible for the deaths).
But Kali’s illusion abilities will create an Elphaba-style trick(Wicked): the world believes they died, including the government.
This is the only way Eleven can truly be free.
There will be a devastatingly emotional callback to Season 1, another moment where Eleven tells Mike:
But this time, goodbye isn’t death. It’s freedom.
But Mike will not know, like Glinda. However, the postcard scene will give him some hope in a (bittersweet) beautiful final 5 minute scene. I am not sure if we will see Mike go to Iceland, or go wherever the postcard is from, but I expect he will smile, and then we cut to Eleven being in a place, other identity, and especially looking safe and in a nice community.
Hopper and Eleven: The Necessary Separation (and contrast with Brenner)
I do not think Hopper dies.
But I do think Hopper has to lose Eleven again, this time emotionally, not physically.
When Eleven fakes her death and escapes (with Kali’s help), Hopper is the one adult who will know the truth or strongly suspect it. And for the first time, he will do the hardest thing imaginable for him:
He will let her go anyway.
No chase.
No deal with the government.
Permission instead of possession. This would contrast Hopper with Brenner, showing who is the real 'dad'.
Brenner loved Eleven as a possession, believing she existed to fulfill a purpose he chose for her, even when he called it care. Hopper began in a similar place (controlling, deciding for her) but unlike Brenner, he learns that love is not ownership. Where Brenner would rather Eleven die than be free, Hopper proves his love by letting her live beyond him.
At its heart, Stranger Things has never been about monsters. It’s about love, identity, and escape, especially for queer kids, for outsiders, for children who were told the world would never let them go.
If the show allows Mike his POV, allows Will his truth, and allows Eleven to live, not as a weapon, not as a martyr, but as a survivor, and Hopper and Joyce learning about parenthood (letting go fear and letting go control) and dealing with their empty nest syndrome by giving each other the attention (having cute dates at Enzo's where they bump into Robin and Vicky of course), then the ending will work.
