impromptu South Park sideblog! i used to be a SP blogger from around 2016-2018 or so, and getting walloped with a boat load of nostalgia for the film has me shakily crawling back to my roots and scrounging up a sideblog.

i was and still am particularly fixated on all things '90s South Park, with a very big focus on SP:BLU. unsure of what the focus of this blog will be, probably very very casual and just dipping my toes back in the water and seeing what everyone's up to. spreading the good word of the French kid who gets mauled by dogs and his annoying British friend. and the lovably annoying super best friends. i live in a world where the show never evolved beyond "what if the Peanuts characters said the fuck word"

s2e7: this wasn’t one i ever really remembered much beyond the sticky situation gag and Craig falling to his doom (🕊️), but i rewatched it very recently and enjoyed it a lot! i was anticipating it to be boring bc i remembered it being a flashback episode, also forgetting the whole subversion with that.. but very charming, the Crabtree subplot was actually more amusing than i remembered it was! my bus driver in elementary school was very Ms. Crabtree-esque so i respect her and find her very funny for that reason, this was a fun episode that gave Mary Kay a spotlight which i always appreciate :) particularly with how aggressive and hilarious her vocals are for Ms. Crabtree. also thought the red shirt pastiche with the Star Trek kid we never see again was fun—M+T sure loved their Star Trek huh? i feel like i never noticed how often they reference it. Kyle does the Shatner voice in at least 2 different episodes

s3e7: SADLY my thoughts aren’t as interesting on this one becauuuuse I DON’T REMEMBER! it’s been a very very long time since i’ve seen this one and i’ve blocked out absolutely everything that happens beyond Cartman doing the Wild Wild West shtick, and i only remember that because i associate Wild Wild West with kids buying tickets to that and sneaking in to see BLU instead LOL. but i’ll be approaching this one on my rewatch soon enough and am very curious :) i think i’d appreciate the novelty of a Cartman and Shelley team-up much more than i once would have. will keep you updated!

the issue i have with those “south park is evil and you are deplorable if you like it” posts is that it’s always so clear that barely any of them have seen south park. they’re always arguing with guys who don’t exist and about plotlines that have never happened. criticizing south park is fine and encouraged! much of south park fucking SUCKS! but none of you can criticize it correctly and it’s irritating.

This was suppose to be so much more detailed and intense, and I had so many ideas for it and I wanted to add in more characters, but I just fizzled out near the end. XD;;; This doesn’t even make sense but whatever. Hopefully you guys will still enjoy it!

legitimately though i am again astounded at the level of talent of SP fanartists and writers. i have 92 posts in my queue right now that are almost all fanart, a lot of stuff i remember liking back in the day but also a lot of stuff completely new to me and just BLOWS ME AWAY. i have never ever reblogged or consumed so much fandom content than i have while being a parkateer, and if anything in recent years i've avoided fandom content altogether for the things i'm interested in because i'm too stuck to my own tastes. that's hardly ever a problem for me with SP, admittedly it used to be and i'm sure there's still a lot of stuff out there Not For Me in multiple senses, but i really respect that, like... every artist's art is like a thumbprint, even if you're drawing the same thing it's going to be different based on your life experiences and tastes and skill, etc. that's just a general rule of art. and with SP that feeling is magnified 1000x, because there's inherent creative freedom with stylizing and portraying these characters... it's really nice to return to.

a lot of my art up to this point has been very "literal", i'm good at replicating other styles and chameleoning my own style--partially bc that's my job as a storyboard artist! but sometimes i get too in my head about preserving the "integrity" of the characters or series or legacies i'm drawing and don't feel i have as much room to experiment. with SP fanart, it essentially is ALL experimentation, ALL taking liberties, etc. i'm just really wowed by the breadth of everyone's abilities and interpretations, and even if there are some things that i personally may disagree with (talking more aesthetically rather than morally lol) i can appreciate it so much more now than i think i was once able to. lot of different thumbprints, so to speak. it's super inspiring!

i'm much more vorcaious in my media diet than i was last time i was an active parkateer, which is great! there are a lot of "branches" relating to the show that i want to explore that i never did or didn't think to. but you can amusingly sort these into 3 categories

sure, i'll read Great Expectations because of Pip! why didn't i before? it's a beloved classic i've never had the opportunity to explore, and i can always use the excuse to pick up another book. healthy for the mind and soul

it's pretty shocking that i actually never thought to seek out BASEketball... i'm sure i could spend my time more wisely, but i also love a good cheesy/trashy movie. keep expectations low and enjoy the fun. plus it's still the '90s era, so more to pull me in. junk food, but everybody loves junk food
