the only drawback of being the largest guy in the polycule is that you never get to wear your shirts
Solving the following riddle will reveal the awful secret behind the universe...
this is about john dies at the end
something we don't talk about enough is john's handwriting in the first book. we are introduced to john as a messy person with self-destructive tendencies, who does insane shit for the fun of it not giving a shit about consequences. before we ever meet him sober, david describes his handwriting, and it's small and neat and orderly, the exact opposite of what you'd expect. i think that's so fascinating, isn't it? this tiny little detail reframes your thinking from "i know this person because i know this stereotype" to "oh, this is a Person." it also shows us a little way that david knows john, because how often do you look at someone's handwriting? it shows us their shared history going through school together and the years of friendship. it's just so neat yknow
not a BAT, not a MAN, not a MANTIS???? but a secret fourth thing
taking my anti-depressants with an extra strong beer i NOT me being a slob. it's me david wong maxxing
Todd Brinkmeyer is such a haunting figure because like the one memory Dave has of him implies a level of closeness that we don’t have him share with anyone else but John (and later, Amy.)
That on top of all his trauma with intimacy theres entire holes missing from his past…that the Dave who existed before Todd was vanished could've been happier, healthier. It’s an underrated part of his identity fragmentation. There’s nothing to linger on, because now Todd never existed. Now Dave is the Dave without Todd. He’s always been the Dave without Todd. We'll never get to know the Dave who was working on a car with his friend.
do you think dave still gets calls from john that night
here we fucking go people!
the book version of john dies at the end is so much better than the movie. i only read it once years ago because there's always a mile-long wait-list for it at the library, but i finally found it again and it's really great. so far my favorite detail that didn't make it into the movie was that the cop questioning john said he wasn't leaving the interview room until he explained what was happening or died of old age and john was like "ok fine." and then immediately fell over dead. next-level maneuver.
I'm never getting over Molly
♡ follow for more soft john dies aesthetic ♡
