The muppet Julia has not yet made her TV debut, but the wide-eyed little girl with a big smile is the star of her own “digital storybook” called “We’re Amazing, 1,2,3.”
For over a year now, Sesame Street has been working with organizations such as Autism Speaks and Autism Self Advocacy to help reduce the stigma associated with autism spectrum disorder. As part of the campaign “See Amazing in All Children,” the adorable muppet Abby Cadabby explains in one YouTube video, “Lots of kids have autism and that just means their brains work a little differently.”
Julia is not the first fictional media character with autism. But Michael Robb, Director of Research for Common Sense Media, an organization that rates and reviews media aimed at children, says Sesame Street’s move is “pretty groundbreaking.” “It can be difficult to start a conversation about children with disabilities. It’s even harder when that difference isn’t visible,” he says.

Yay! So happy about this step in the right direction. Autism is a big, wide world of varied challenges and experiences - but the more that we bring an awareness and acceptance of the diagnosis to the public, the closer we are to eliminating the stigma surrounding this complicated spectrum.
Overheard at Starbucks
Man walks into Starbucks and a woman at a table of ladies (who just arrived from morning yoga) recognizes him & calls him over to her table. She then asks him to keep an eye out for a boat for sale, one that she can take down to the Cape and spend her summers on. "Just something around twenty-three feet or so," she says. Quite the life to be lounging at Starbucks mid morning on a workday, making deals for a boat.
Now I can bring the mountains with me wherever I go. Big thanks to @teawulfe at #GrimNorth for this gorgeous piece of art. 🗻🌞🙌🏼🍂 #mountaintattoo #obsessed #sisterhoodofshred #iloveNH #stokedforsnow #decorateyourself #tattoo #foliage #newengland _ ...And yes I put my jacket right back on and got out of the sun. 😋 (at Haggetts Pond)
How We Treat Mental Illness Vs. How We Treat Physical Illness
It’s World Mental Health Day.
Remember, everyone experiences mental illness differently, and the way we talk about it can have a significant effect on someone’s well-being. Be kind and empathetic, regardless of a person’s diagnosis. -Vesta
On today's agenda... Final results coming soon! 😉🗻🌞👌🏼 #tattoo #portsmouth #bodyart #grimnorth #stoked #decorateyourself #mountainsaremyjam (at Grim North Tattoo and Piercing)
Okay folks, tattoo day is officially here!
Up in Portsmouth to get my mountains today. Super stoked slash feeling like I might throw up. Yay for nervous excitement!!
Autism isn't all about the six-year-old who can play Piano Man better than Billy Joel. Autism can be hard. Autism can be sad. Autism can be messy. Autism can be violent. Autism can be isolating.
This article really hits home to me. Working with kiddos on the spectrum is challenging - but what is more frustrating is to see the lack of education and understanding out there. It breaks my heart to see kiddos who deserve the chance for more services and more assistance missing out because of the fear their families experience when the “A word” is mentioned. Understandably so, it is a daunting and uneasy feat to begin the process of neurological testing to diagnose a child on the spectrum. But it makes me so sad each day to see how much the fear of isolation affects these families, sometimes to the point where it prevents them from moving forward with pursuing a diagnosis and obtaining the effective and necessary services out there.
I dream of a "one-day” where we truly are aware of the full spectrum that Autism brings. It is not one specific experience, but a vast and diverse spectrum of functional levels, each with their own individual impact on a child and their family. Here’s hoping that one day, inclusion and acceptance and true awareness are the new “typical” in our society.
Buried in powder at Ragged last season. Itching to be back on my board & stoked to be part of the #sisterhoodofshred as an ambassador for @coalitionsnow this season! ✌🏼️🏂❄️🗻
