this broke my heart, i’m not going to lie. when i was in vilnius, i walked here countless times, and each time i smiled to myself and felt that bit safer and more welcome. plus, it’s just fun and colourful and cheerful, a bit of sunshine and brightness. this here is straight-up cartoon villain behaviour, to see a rainbow and feel compelled to paint it over with black, but at least they’re wasting their time on something petty rather than committing violent hate crimes against queer people (which very much do happen). and let us call them what they are — not “ultra-traditionalists” but the fascist alt-right that has lithuanian society in its chokehold more and more each day.

in a satisfying conclusion to this particular manifestation of homophobia, the vilnius municipality will repaint the rainbow and make these assholes who defaced it cover the costs. there will be more aggressions tomorrow, these people aren’t going to change — but you cannot break us, nor paint you out of your city.
