Mm. Sorry for bothering you, but can I translate your tutorial into russian? Of course I'll credit you.
Absolutely! Thank you!
i love your art so much and i love you so much, what i know of you <3 i hope that you and your axolotl and momo are all doing really well and know that you're worthwhile and awesome.
Aww thank you so much! You have no idea what this means to me right now. This is seriously just what I needed. Excuse me while I cry like a baby, lol.(Zen and Momo are doing great, by the way! Zen’s new tank /still/ hasn’t started to cycle, but that will probably change once the weather warms up. He seems content enough in his current tank, so I’m not too worried. Momo’s just keeping it chill, though I think she’d like me to draw her more.... Soon, Momo! Soon!)
*some vegan rando who has never owned a cat before:* don’t put your cats outside! Having an outdoor cat is animal cruelty! Cats are not meant to live outside, why don’t dogs live outside?? If your cat lives outdoors then you are a horrible cat owner!!
*me*: okay…. Anyways… u ever thought about actually caring for an outdoor cat? Try again
You guys seeing this?
Hello @sonik-the-hedgehog, I’m a member of the community on Tumblr known as “vulture culture.” While some members of our little flock are vegan, largely we aren’t, and it makes sense that we aren’t, because you see, ‘Vulture Culture” is dedicated to the preservation, cleaning and crafting with animal remains. Most notably, bones, pelts, claws and teeth.
Do you know what happens to a lot of free roaming feral or outdoor cats? They come to us. They come to us as corpses.
It’s a pretty common theme in the vulture culture community, to the point where some of our informative posts have such features as “How to find out if the dead cat you found has an owner” or “how long you should wait before giving up and processing the corpse to collect the skull” or the legalities of buying, selling, or crafting with the skulls or pelts of salvaged dead cats. A good portion of us vultures have cat skulls on our shelves. And the vast, overwhelming majority of those cat skulls has been picked up by the road.
Not from a cat that’s died peacefully of old age, but from a cat that crossed the road at the wrong time, or a cat that came up on the wrong side of a larger predator, or a cat that died of exposure to the elements, or a cat that succumbed to a lingering disease.
You see, when you allow your cat to live like a wild animal, you’re also opening the door for your cat to DIE like a wild animal, and wild animals don’t have warm safe beds or bandages or pain killers. Wild animals struggle for days or even weeks on a bloody stump of an injured limb. Wild animals hide under porches and die alone where nobody finds them until they begin to smell. Even more wild animals simply disappear, and are absorbed by the landscape until there’s not a single little shred of evidence they ever even existed.
I’ve found such a cat myself! It’s dessicated skin and bleached bones sat, rather tellingly, right outside of an old fox den. Now, it’s impossible to say if the foxes killed the cat, or only scavenged it already dead, or if the cat was merely injured and tired and took shelter in the fox den of its own accord. But it was also impossible to tell whose cat it was, if it had a family or anyone that loved it. Even if it were male or female. It’s identity was erased and anyone who ever had any hope of finding it again will never, ever see it again. It’s sleeping in the fox den to this very day.
Maybe when it’s rotted down a bit more I’ll go look for it again. I’ll pick it up in a little bag and take it home and clean it up with peroxide and hot water. When it’s clean maybe I’ll give it a nickname like “Sam” or “Macavity” and I’ll put it on my shelf. I’ll take care of the kitty for years to come, like its former owner couldn’t. I’ll keep it clean and warm and safe on a shelf, like it wasn’t kept while it lived. And kitty will be an indoor kitty far too late for it to ever matter.
Your outdoor cats come to us eventually, and we’ll gladly take care of them forever.
I work at a pet supply store, people are always coming in to look at tanks. I know very little about aquatic animals.
So, would fishblr & co. mind telling me ideal tank sizes for various species? Whether they need a heater? A filter? Proper substrate?
Anything aquatic, not just fish. Shrimp, turtles, etc. So I know what direction to steer these people in? I had a woman who wanted to put a Red-eared Slider in a 10g and I know that’s not right but I didn’t know what size to direct her too.
I’m going to write everything out in a note book, or type it up to print and put in my information folder, so I’ve got it on me.
Oh, also! Recommendations for your favorite educational websites and FB groups would be great.
Axolotls: Tank size: 20 gallons minimum for one axolotl. Add 10 gallons for every additional axolotl in the tank. (though many people advise keeping only one per tank) Floor space is more important than swimming space since they spend most of their time sitting on the bottom, so longer tanks are better than taller ones. Substrate: fine sand (once they reach full size), bare-bottom, or stones larger than an adult axolotl’s head. They ABSOLUTELY CANNOT be kept on gravel/pebbles. They can accidentally ingest any pebbles smaller than their head and can die from it. Filter: Absolutely required alongside a strong cycle. Avoid filters that create significant water flow. Sponge filters are popular choices for axolotls. They are often combined with an air stone to keep the water oxygenated. Heater/fan: ideal tank temp is between 16-18 degrees celsius, so a cooling fan and/or a thermostat-controlled heater may be required depending on where you live. It’s important to keep your temperature as stable as possible. Abrupt changes in temperature can stress out the animal. Temperatures over 24 celsius can kill them. They slow down on the lower end of the temperature range, but it’s not nearly as dangerous as being too warm Feeding: Axolotls can eat a variety of things, but most breeders and experts recommend a diet that consists mostly of earth worms. Some people feed salmon pellets, brine shrimps, and blood worms too, but there is some debate about which ones are best. Avoid bony live feeder fish, as they can nibble on your axolotl’s gills and damage them, and the bones can get stuck in your animal’s system and cause problems much like gravel. Light: Axolotls like darkness. Give them as many hiding spaces as possible and try to keep the lights down if possible. The more light in the room, the more hides you should have in your tank Tank accessories: Axolotls will dig up live plants, so they’re not generally recommended. Avoid anything that could be sharp or scratchy. If you can swipe a pair of pantyhoes across it without them catching, it should be okay. If not it keep it out of the tank. Also go for fabric plants over plastic plants. Plastic plants can have sharp edges. Tank mates: Don’t. FELLOW JET UNDERSTANDS <3
This beautiful Northern-breed pup was a stray found on the street. Someone at the shelter he was sent to supposedly labeled him as a “wolf/coyote hybrid” shortly after intake. Comments on the pup’s Facebook posting likewise went something along the lines of, “I had a hybrid just like him once!” and so on. As a result, the pup was deemed unsuitable for adoption to the general public. He was removed from the “adoptable” list and transferred to an off-view kennel in the back of the shelter while staff tried to figure out what to do with him. Thankfully, a representative at Wolf Connection spoke with the shelter’s director and talked some sense into them to get the “hybrid” label removed. This pup is now available for adoption again and is rightfully labeled as a “husky mix” instead. His chance at a new life was nearly taken from him before it even began, all because someone assumed that this beautiful pup was a hybrid. Not all are so lucky as he is. Remember this before calling your dog-dog “part wolf”. It gives people the wrong impression about how REAL wolfdogs look and act, and animals like this darling are the ones who ultimately pay.
Early contenders for best Halloween costume.
@yourdogisnotawolf Literally the only acceptable time to call your husky a wolf :P
It seems like all of the resources I can easily find online for identifying wolves vs dogs are either massive and difficult to understand without prior knowledge of the subject, or extremely bare-bones and miss a lot of key information. I tried to hit a comfortable middle-ground. (sorry if it’s a little wordy) This tutorial is made as a reference for drawing, so everything but purely visual differences between dogs and wolves have been left out. I’ve been wanting to make this for a while now, so I’m glad I finally sat down and did it! **EDIT** When it comes to the section on wolfdogs, please take it with a grain of salt. With something as complicated as genetics, they are of course, not going to be as simple as I make it seem. What features different levels of content can display, and even which percentages designate which levels of content are often hotly debated within the wolfdog community. At this point I’ve elected not to change the image set itself because: a. it’s a huge pain in the ass b. this is a tutorial for beginning artists. It’s meant to be a hugely simplified version of the topic, and I’ve stated clearly that it is NOT to be used in real-world identification. ((Huge thanks to yourdogisnotawolf. who’s blog inspired me to make this and for digging up that amazing picture of the wolf/lab mix))
This is truly amazing. Plus perfectly timed - I had several people asking me about drawing wolves lately, so here you go!
Wonderful and incredibly concise and simple to understand. Props to the original post. This has been very helpful in education people on the different between a wolf and a domesticated dog. I would love to use this in educational talks, granted permission. It’s by far the easiest guide I’ve come across and most accurate, too. Props to you.
You are absolutely welcome to use this for talks! Thank you so much!!
I love your art so much! It always makes me smile. Also, you have the most fantastic url ever.
Thank yooouuu, mysterious stranger!! ;A;
Thank so much for checking out my pup! I was just always curious since she has a completely straight tail and not dark markings like most huskys, but I've always been doubtful. Either way she's a beautiful dog and I love her a ton, thanks again!
No prob! It was tons of fun! I believe that variety of coat color is called ‘agouti’ but it usually appears a bit darker, so it might have a different name when it’s kind of pale like on your dog. But I’m not 100% sure about that. :P
My pup, Takeko! She’s named after Nakano Takeko, a female Japanese warrior who died fighting in the Boshin War. momo-no-aware , this is her, unfortunately I have no idea when she was born, my aunt took her in then decided she didn’t want her and left her to us. My aunt claimed the guy she got Keko from said she was a wolf mix but who knows for sure.
These pics are a little difficult to judge from alone, but I don’t see anything that would make me think she has any wolf content in her. She has large, pointy ears with visible skin inside, large inqisitive eyes, and no visible cape. One thing I also tend to look for that I didn’t mention in the tutorial is well-furred cheeks. Wolves and wolfdogs of just about any content will usually have almost diamond-shaped heads due to all of their fur. Your pup looks to have a more round or rectangular silhouette to her head. Real wolfdogs are also generally very difficult to come by. I’ve heard it said that 80% or more of ‘claimed’ wolfdogs in the US are actually just normal dogs. People will often try to sell dogs or puppies for big bucks by claiming wolf content when there isn’t any, so it’s not unreasonable to be doubtful whenever you hear someone claiming their dog to be part (and even sometimes all) wolf. To me, your dog looks like an Alaskan Malamute or a Siberian Husky. Possibly a mix of the two. And I’m honestly so envious. :P I’ve always wanted a Malamute or Husky! Such gorgeous dogs, and every one I’ve ever met I’ve instantly fallen in love with. From now on I would suggest dropping the ‘wolfdog’ label for your lovely Takeko. Claiming wolf heritage in a pure dog can actually be really dangerous for your pup! Legalities regarding wolf/wolfdog ownership can vary from country/state/city, and there are plenty of places where owning a wolfdog is illegal. (not sure about where you are, so you’d have to check for your specific location) If you claim to have a wolfdog in a place where it’s illegal, you can be fined and your dog can be taken from you and even killed. (Authorities, shelter workers, and even veterenarians often can’t tell the difference between a wolf and a dog) Rabbies vaccines also have not yet been tested/approved as effective for wolves and wolfdogs yet, so if your dog were ever to bite anyone (or even if someone just decided they thought your dog was dangerous and called someone to take care of it) there is very little chance that she would make it out of that situation alive if they had any reason to believe she had any wolf content. So be careful out there!! Thank you so much for tagging me in these pics! I’m honored that you’d ask my opinion! I hope I was helpful!
Would it be inappropriate for me to tag you in some pictures of my dog to ask what your opinion on her wolf content is? When we got her the previous owner claimed she was mixed but we've never had it verified before. I don't expect you to take too much time out of your day to give her a good look over or anything, just a guess. And thanks in advance for anything!
I don’t mind at all!! I’d love to take a look at your pup! Although I must tell you that I’m far from an expert on the subject, and while I can probably tell you with certainty whether or not your animal is or isn’t a wolf, my guess at its content might be a bit off. :P But I’ll do my best! Also, would you possibly know what month of the year she was born?
It seems like all of the resources I can easily find online for identifying wolves vs dogs are either massive and difficult to understand without prior knowledge of the subject, or extremely bare-bones and miss a lot of key information. I tried to hit a comfortable middle-ground. (sorry if it's a little wordy) This tutorial is made as a reference for drawing, so everything but purely visual differences between dogs and wolves have been left out. I've been wanting to make this for a while now, so I'm glad I finally sat down and did it! **EDIT** When it comes to the section on wolfdogs, please take it with a grain of salt. It's meant to be a hugely simplified version of the topic, and I've stated clearly that it is NOT to be used in real-world identification. **EDIT 2** A couple people have noted that the puppies section is a little misleading. Wolf puppies will always be born a solid brown, but that brown can range from a very dark brown (appearing as black) to a llight, gray-ish brown. The important point is that wolf pups will always be a solid color with even less distinguishable markings than even adult wolves. (also this guide does not include color possibilities related to birth defects or other genetic anomalies such as albinism) ((Huge thanks to yourdogisnotawolf. who’s blog inspired me to make this and for digging up that amazing picture of the wolf/lab mix))
FINALLY GOT A NEW TANK FOR MY AXOLOTL!! You can see him in his current tank in the bottom there. We probably won't have him in the new tank for a month or so still since we have to start a cycle going in it before we move him in. For anyone who wants an axolotl (or any pet for that matter) I urge you to consider this: We have had this little guy for less than a year and have now spent close to $900 on keeping him alive and well. Just this one tiny creature. This little 3 oz living rice noodle needs to live in a tank that, when full, will weigh 180+ pounds. That's more than two of me. The water must be specially treated, tested, and changed weekly. We have to raise, cut, and cook live worms for him to eat every day. We've had to pack him up in a cooler and drive 2 hours both ways to take him to a vet. We had to buy him an air conditioner for the summer and a thermostat-controlled tank heater for the winter. In his current, non-cyling, too-small tank, we have to change most of his water every other day, and do full changes once a week. He has taken a MASSIVE amount of time and effort to keep alive and happy and most experienced axolotl owners would still say, until we've got him in his correctly-sized cycling tank, that we haven't even maintained a bare minimum for sufficient care. He's been a hugely unexpected responsibility. This is true of ALL PETS. If you have any interest in getting any sort of animal, do LOADS of internet research beforehand. Outdated books and pet store employees are not accurate sources. And even when you think you know all there is to know about your animal of choice, I promise you don't. And that's okay. You have to learn from experience. (And continue seeking new information even when you think you've got a handle on it. Because you'll ALWAYS discover there's something you could be doing better) But don't be shocked if you end up spending 5 times what you expected on unforseen expenses. ESPECIALLY with exotics like axolotls. My biggest piece of advice when it comes to exotic pets: Unless you're fucking obsessed with them AND their care (Like seriously. You have to genuinely LOVE the idea of busting your ass for them constantly) then DON'T GET ONE. DON'T DO IT.
I was in my East Asian History class today and juST GOT YOUR URL THAT'S SO CLEVER I gasped in class
As far as I know you’re literally the only person who’s gotten it without me having to explain it.I love you.
